PSB: Interview & Giveaway with Nancy Holder

PSB2

Today I have the chance to have Nancy Holder by my side! She wrote multiple books, including the Wicked series, and more recently the Crusade series. Please read on to discover more about Nancy, and a great giveaway!

A series about spirits and possessions is rather original, what triggered the whole concept?

Actually, my editor and I were trying to think of something for me to do after the success of PRETTY LITTLE DEVILS.  She was thinking of setting the series in New Hampshire but I know there are a lot of very remote parts of California, and suggested we move it there

I love ghost stories and stories about possession really freak me out.  I’ve been afraid to watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose, based on the story of Anneliese Michel.  I just tried to watch a youtube that says it’s of a doll moving a candle.  I had to stop because I got soo scared.  Freaky, freaky, freaky.

What can we expect in, The Screaming Season, third book in the series?

I loved writing The Screaming Season.  I felt good about it all the way through.  I was scared most of the time, always a good sign!  In The Screaming Season, most of Lindsay’s questions will be answered.   I did leave a few doors open in case there’s a fourth book, but there’s a sense of being “done” by the end of Screaming.

Do you believe in ghosts/spirits? Have you ever had a weird encounter?

Yes, I have had a couple of weird encounters.  I wrote about one of them in Dancing with the Dark, edited by Stephen Jones.  When I was about nineteen, I thought I saw the ghost of my grandfather standing in the doorway to his downstairs office.  And my cousin and I had a ghost we named “Herman.”  We were very afraid of him.

If the Possession series was made into a TV shows, who would you like to play your main character's roles?

That’s a toughie!  I wish Paris Hilton were younger…but Elle Fanning would be great for Mandy.  Tamanna, and Molly Quinn.  I love Molly Quinn.  I’d like to see who the casting director picked!

Could you pick a song to represent each of the main characters?

Actually, I watched a ton of horror movies (one every morning that I wrote the Possessions series!) and listen to soundtracks.  Here are some of my favorite soundtracks and CD’s to read The Screaming Season to:

  • El Orfanato
  • Dark Water
  • Blair Witch 2
  • Hellbent
  • The Eye
  • The Uninvited
  • The Others

and I LOVE the music of Goblin (Suspiria, Profondo Rosso)

What's for you the best part of being an author?

I love “having” to watch movies and read widely. I also love it that I can pick up my daughter from school.  I love it that I can write anywhere—in hotel rooms, airplanes, my house, a coffee shop.  I’m a road warrior.  I love knowing intelligent and well-read people.

Did you ever imagine yourself being so successful?

I dreamed about it, but I didn’t really think it would happen.  I’m so grateful to everyone who’s ever read a book of mine.  Thank you all for my career.

Could you share with us three things you like to do that isn't related to writing?

I like to cook with my daughter.  We are really amazing cooks!  I like to travel, and I really like to party at Disney theme parks with my friend and frequent writing partner, Debbie Viguie.

What book are you currently reading?

I’m reading an advance reader copy of THE DARK AND HOLLOW PLACES by Carrie Ryan.  I love it!

Last a question I ask all of my guests, what's your best spring break memory?

Two years ago, my daughter and I flew to the east coast.  We spent an entire day driving to Baltimore to see the grave of Edgar Allan Poe.  It was an amazing experience.  Then we went to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown.  And then…Busch Gardens!  It was a fantastic vacation.

---------------------------------

Thank you so much Nancy for joining us! I really don’t know how you watch one horror movie a day, I can’t stand them, I’m already frightened lol

Nancy generously offered a copy of The Screaming Season, one copy of Crusade & Signed Bookplates to one lucky winner!

The Screaming Season (Possessions #3)

The third novel in the bone-chilling Possessions series by New York Times bestselling author Nancy Holder

The gutsy heroine of Possessions and The Evil Within returns for another year of boarding school at the haunted Marlwood Academy. Lindsay wakes to find herself strapped down in the infirmary. She had a breakdown and might have tried to kill her nemesis Mandy or Mandy's boyfriend, Troy—or both. The details are hazy, but one thing is certain: she is possessed by a spirit she cannot trust.

Lindsay soon realizes that nowhere on campus is safe. Then, she finds a surprising ally in her former rival. Together, Lindsay and Mandy must figure out who can be trusted—and who wants them dead. But when Lindsay's ex-boyfriend shows up at Marlwood, she is given a chance to get away and be free of the curse. Will she take Riley's hand and run, or team up with a new love to save Marlwood from the evil spirits forever?

Crusade (Crusade, #1)

For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain’s Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun.

Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated — and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose.

Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself — and her heart.

  3. I occasionally have semi psychic 'gut feelings' or thoughts. The thoughts are more random stuff but the 'gut feelings' are near psychic at times. I remember one time driving down my very dark, tree lined back country road at the dead of night. I reached the curvy section of road and got the worest gut feeling, something was very, very wrong. Danger! It said. So I slowed way down and sure enough as I rounded the bend I saw deer standing right in the middle of road. If I hadn't slowed down I might have hit them. I might have been hurt. But I didn't and I wasn't. Because of my uncalled for 'gut feeling'. And that's my story.

  13. What a great contest! :) I am loving Paranormal Spring Break.

When I was little my entire family was eating breakfast in the kitchen when we heard a loud bang noise upstairs like something had been knocked off a dresser and then at the top of the stairs there was a light (almost like a floating orb) that suddenly got brighter and then disappeared. It scared me because it was almost like a ghost had been up in my room and then when it saw me coming to investigate it got scared of being caught and left quickly. CREEPY!

  31. I've never had a paranormal encounter, but my father has. One day before I was born my dad was at home with his brother and sister in law and also his newborn niece. A man appeared to all of them and pointed to his niece's room and disappeared. They all thought nothing of it because they had been drinking, but when they went to check on her later, my dad's niece was dead. True story. It gives me chills everytime!

I definitely believe that there are spirits among us. One night while I was home alone, and on the phone with a friend.. as I walked down the hallway I felt someone breathing near my ear (warm breath) and a sigh escaping. I swear I never screamed so loud and ran so fast down the stairs! My friend was yelling on the phone saying that she'll call the cops lol but then I turned on the light to go back upstairs and there was no one. Wow, you have no idea how fast my heart was beating at that moment.

  50. Well, once I was at a friends house (I was about 7), in her attick and we were looking for something.Everything was topped one on top of the other, so if something shifted them everything would fall. We were heading for the back of the attick when we heard something and suddenly all the boxes in the back fell. We screamed and ran. We were breathless when we ran to her mom who told us that it was just the wind. None the less, I was really freaked out.

  52. Well, I lived in a haunted house back then. My family (my grandparents) were the first to buy a lot and have a house built in our subdivision. It used to be some sort of woodsy field. By the time that I was old enough to understand ghosts, I remember that four of the family died in the same house. So...I guess it's just natural to be haunted. I place a cup on the table, go rummaging in my room and come back and find it gone. I'm alone in the house. Whispers from the corner. That feeling on the back of your neck when you feel as if someone's watching. Doors being blown open despite the fact that the curtain right next to the door isn't moving at all - there's no wind.

My mum has told me the woman was simply looking at me and that she didn't feel frightened in anyway, as though the lady meant her or me no harm.
The weird them was when my became fully awake, and the woman was now she looked down and saw that my jumpsuit was now inside out....and it hadn't been when they went to be.

I do remember waking up and my bed being in a different place. You see we lived in a 100+ year old school house. She was home alone with us those nights because my dad was at work...

I heard a noise and thought it was my dad, so my mom moved the closet door so i could open the bedroom one, and i looked to my right (which was looking down the hallway towards the kitchen) nothing. Then I looked left. I saw a man standing at the end of the hallway. he was wearing blue overalls. He just looked at me, smiled, and then disappeared into the end of the hallway. Just freaked me out!!! Trust me. No lie. I remember this like it was yesterday.

  82. When I first moved into my house I noticed that I would find doors suddenly opened that were closed when I last looked at them and TVs on when I know I had turned them off. I have a bathroom connected to my bedroom and every night I would close the door to it before I went to bed. Then every morning when I woke up it would be open. I don't know if it was anything paranormal causing it or not, but it was weird. My house is actually right in between two cemeteries so it made me wonder. It kept happening for a few months and then it just stopped.

  86. I am not sure whether it was a paranormal experience but a while ago, i had a dream.

In my dream, i was awoken by a small light in my room. I slept with my light off, you see. I felt that there was a person, a male person sitting on the foot of my bed. I was scared, I couldn't move. Then, I heard someone in the washroom outside, I assumed should be my brother. I screamed for him to come in. He opened the door and as the light flow into my room, I was able to see clearly the face of the appariton, it was a male, half transparent. I wanted to tell my brother that there was something there. But I couldn't say anything. As hard as i tried, I just couldn't utter a sound. And the appariton was getting nearer and nearer, as if to grab me. Then i was finally able to scream. I woke up after that.

It felt so real even after I woke up that I wonder whether it was real.

  89. I was sleeping in bed when I felt what I thought to be my cat jump up on my bed and curled up next to me, when I reached to pet my cat there was nothing there and the air there was chilly. Since then I have had many experiences with what is now named "the ghost cat".

  95. Oh boy have I had paranormal encounters!

I can distinctly remember a few times where i saw something paranormal, ghosts. A few years back i'd visited some family off in Portugal and remember going out late at night near the barns only to be completely creeped out when i saw someone literally walk right in front of my, cross my path and walk straight THROUGH the barn. I was hysterical and ran home screaming. I was then told that i was imagining it but it happened the next week when i decided i probably HAD imagined it and decided to walk back out again. Needless to say, never EVER went back near those barns at night again.

  96. As a new Nancy Holder Fan, I have to hope for some luck here!

I don't know whether it counts as a paranormal encounter, but I firmly believe that my Granddad was in my room shortly after he passed away at a clinic. (He had a brain aneurysm (sp?) and died a few weeks later.)

April 6, coincidentally, is his brother's birthday, by the way.

  101. Sometimes I feel like someone helps me. When I'm in trouble or don't know what to do, the solution is "whispered" in my ear, or just suddenly pops in my mind.... maybe it's just intuition... or maybe a guardian spirit/angel... who knows? It's helpful. :)

  108. I guessed I experienced it twice ? First was when I woke up around 3-4am ? And I was going to Facebook . Suddenly , there was no internet connection . And even my sister's phone had no connection . Her phone talk with her boyfriend was cut off suddenly . She went out of our room and saw someone in my brother's room and went back to our room . When she tried to close the door , she felt a force trying to push the door and she quickly pushed it . My heart was beating super fast! I slept with my sister . Secondly , around 3am there was a knock on the door outside . It was slow . It was like "knock.... knock knock ... knock ... knock knock knock ..." and the windchimes outside started tingling ? On that very day , my sister and I slept together again . I was really afraid .

    Yours truly, Fidah .

  111. I've had psychic feelings and a few dreams that came true. I had a feeling, when I was a child to stay home and not ride with my Mom to the store. She ended up having an accident, during which I would have surely been hurt. This was before the seatbelt laws.

  113. Actually yes, I think I did. A few months ago I was sitting in the bedroom at the computer when my pony tail was pulled with enough force that my head snapped back. I turned around to yell at my kids only there was no one in my room. Positive that it was one of my kids and they ran out, I ran into the living room and there all three of my kids sat engrossed in a movie. It creeped me out
