Eight years after Graceling, Bitterblue is now queen of Monsea. But the influence of her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities, lives on. But when Bitterblue begins sneaking outside the castle—disguised and alone—to walk the streets of her own city, she starts realizing that the kingdom has been under the thirty-five-year spell of a madman, and the only way to move forward is to revisit the past.

Two thieves, who only steal what has already been stolen, change her life forever. They hold a key to the truth of Leck’s reign. And one of them, with an extreme skill called a Grace that he hasn’t yet identified, holds a key to her heart.

Eight years after the terrible events taking place at the end of Graceling, little Bitterblue is now eighteen of age and Queen of Monsea. Ruling after her psychotic father is a very hard task for someone such a young age and since age ten, when she acceded to the throne, Bitterblue has been surrounded but her father’s old advisers. Bitterblue’s father had a terrible Grace, he could fog one’s mind making them do – and think- whatever he wanted. The consequences of his actions left tangible injuries to Monsea’s people and Bitterblue is doing her best to help her kingdom recover. Nothing prepared our young heroine to face what she uncovers on a nightly trip in town though. Her kingdom isn’t has healthy has she thought it was, and it appears people have been keeping things from her, lying to her.

I’ve been waiting for Bitterblue’s release for almost three years now, and let me tell you, I was one excited reader when this ARC showed up at my door! Graceling & Fire are amongst my favorite books ever, and Bitterblue lived up to my expectations, even though it’s very different from its companions. Don’t worry the world is the same and the characters we love are present, the major difference is the spirit and atmosphere of this book. See both Katsa and Fire were strong heroine with incredible physical abilities, and while Bitterblue has her own strengths, they are not of the athletic kind and due to her past, she is very vulnerable emotionally.

Bitterblue was a very endearing character. At the beginning of the book she genuinely thinks her Kingdom is on the way to healing from her father’s plague and holds to heart the well being of her subjects. The latter never changes, but when she decided to sneak into town, one night, to learn more about the city, she was shocked to discover things aren’t as reported by her advisers and she launches on a mission to uncover the truth, for the sake of her folks. Her intentions were always pure, but her methods questionable. She is very innocent in her desire for a better world, but will find herself sneaking around, lying and deceiving her friends in the process. Witnessing her heart-breaking failures really engrossed me into the story, hoping I could make sense of what’s really going on and help her through it. Thankfully the lovely Bitterblue was surrounded by friends such as Po, Katsa, Giddon, Raffin and many new ones, but even though they are working really hard, sickening themselves in the process, the truth is buried much deeper than Bitterblue thought.

I was extremely happy to see all those familiar faces when I read the book. I loved Graceling’s characters and having them along for the ride was amazing, even if they only held a secondary role. Giddon won my heart over the course of this adventure, and I could totally imagine him with Bitterblue in the future, even considering their age difference. I don’t want to ruin anything, but you might be interested in knowing that you’ll get to see glimpses of Dell & Pikkia (both Kingdoms from Fire)! I thought it was really exciting, and I’m hoping maybe the next book (if there is one?) will take us back there! Sapphire, a young thief Bitterblue befriends, proved to be a rather interesting character. He was enticing and frustrating all at once. Hot and Cold with Bitterblue and always surprising, I found myself wanting to shake some sense into him in more than one occasion. A bit of a love story develops between the two of them, but don’t hold your breath for romance, as it’s barely there.

Because of Bitterblue’s nature, this novel wasn’t as action filled as the previous ones, but just as interesting. All the action is behind the curtains with power plays of treason and mystery. Everybody lies, and the trick is to discover what’s the extend of their lies, whom can you really trust and who might stab you in the back around the next corner. The extend of the lies surrounding our young hero is mind-boggling and even thought I had suspicions toward some characters, I never guessed the extend of the betrayal until Bitterblue finally, pain-stalkingly, did. Kristin Cashore really brought the readers into a fog-filled world, representative of the damage Leck, the late King, did. Trying to figure out the truth was highly addicting and I truly enjoyed trying to guess which characters were trustworthy and which ones weren’t.

I found the conclusion most satisfy with all the culprits being uncovered, hope for a better future for Bitterblue, her friends and her Kingdom, and cleverly planted hints of what might be coming next. I don’t know if Kristin is currently working on another sequel, but I really hope so. This chapter was pleasingly closed, but there are a lot of openings for new stories to come. I have a few options in mind, but won’t reveal them as it would be slightly spoiler-ish :)

Bitterblue was marvelous, thrilling and highly mysterious. Each page was a delight and even though the book is fairly long with its 500+ pages, I navigated the story at high speed, curious of what would happen next, and couldn’t help but want more by the time I was done. Kristin Cashore has the fantastic talent to create captivating worlds, with stunning characters and my only wish is that we could get more of her writing because I can’t be sated!

It’s really a killer tease!

Bitterblue

The long-awaited companion to New York Times bestsellers Graceling and Fire

Eight years after Graceling, Bitterblue is now queen of Monsea. But the influence of her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities, lives on. Her advisors, who have run things since Leck died, believe in a forward-thinking plan: Pardon all who committed terrible acts under Leck's reign, and forget anything bad ever happened. Is it May 1st yet? I mean, we’ve waited long enough right?

Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore–FINALY!

YAY! Ok I made the insane happy dance on Thursday when Kristin Cashore announced the official release date of Bitterblue. I LOVED Fire (my review) and Graceling (my review) and I feel like I’ve been awaiting Bitterblue forever! So I’m excited out of my mind right now lol

US  //  UK

Kristin said:

Bitterblue will be released on May 1, 2012 in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. It will be released on the same day in a few other countries/languages as well; I'll supply that information when I have it.

The official Publisher’s Weekly announcement:

The [US] cover to Kristin Cashore’s eagerly awaited third novel is royal blue -fitting since the title character has blue in her name and is the king’s daughter. But, oooh. What’s with those keys: one gold, one silver, one bronze?

Dial will publish Bitterblue, a companion to Cashore’s bestsellers Graceling (Harcourt, 2008) and Fire (Dial, 2009) on May 1, 2012 but this first look at the cover ought to tantalize her many fans.

The novel, which has an announced first printing of 200,000 copies and clocks in at a hefty 576 pages, picks up eight years after Graceling, with Bitterblue now 18 and the reigning queen of Monsea. Cashore says the story constitutes more of a companion than a strict sequel. Graceling fans, however, will likely be thrilled to learn that the heroine of that book – the different-colored-eyed Katsa – returns in Bitterblue, as does her lover, Po.

Other characters from Graceling appear, too, most notably (and unavoidably, since he is Bitterblue’s father), the nefarious King Leck, the only character who appears in both Graceling and Fire.

For Cashore, the completion of her third novel allows her to take a deep breath – of relief. “Fire was such an emotionally hard book for me to write that when I started Bitterblue I vowed to write something light and fun,” Cashore said. “I was well into it before I had the realization that if light and fun is what you’re after you probably shouldn’t have a main character whose father murdered her mother.”

The only down side to all this excitement? My due date is May 2nd, so unless I’m lucky enough to score an ARC I might not get to read it right away =(

Either way, I’m super excited and I CAN’T WAIT to get my hands on Bitterblue, and I will pre-order a UK copy as my copies of Fire & Graceling have UK covers to. Anyone from the UK would be sweet enough to pre-order for me? I’d pay you via paypal ^^ [tyngauf(a)gmail.com]

While you wait, you might want to check the Study series by Maria V Snyder, I rushed through it this week and thought they have a lot of similarities =)tyngasig

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

" In a world where people born with an exceptional skill, known as a Grace, are both feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing.

Feared by the court and shunned by those her own age the darkness of her Grave casts a heavy shadow over Katsa's life. Yet she remains defiant: when the King of Lienid's father is kidnapped she investigates, and stumbles across a mystery. Who would want to kidnap the old man, and why? And who was the extraordinary Graced man whose fighting abilities rivaled her own?

The only thing Katsa is sure of is that she no longer wants to kill. The intrigue around this kidnapping offers her a way out - but little does she realize, when she takes it, that something insidious and dark lurks behind the mystery. Something spreading from the shadowy figure of a one-eyes king..." - Book Cover

Graceling takes place in a medieval era where Kings are gods and dictators. In this strange world some kids wakes up one day with eyes of two different colors, they are Gracelings and they are feared by their pairs. A Grace can be as insignificant as swimming or cooking abilities, but some like combat skill and mind-reading are seeked by Kings to exploit.

Katsa's life changed the day her Grace manifested itself: she killed her cousin with bare hands. And from that day, nothing has been the same. She trained hard with the King's Spymaster and by age 10 she was a dangerous weapon sent by the King to punish his people.

As Katsa grow up, she questions her uncle's decision (the King) and create a secret movement. The Council's mission is to secretly fight for the greater good and that's how Katsa ended up saving an old Lienid and met Po, a Prince Graced with fighting.
Katsa will have to make some life changing decisions in order to fight for her beliefs, and it won't be without consequences.

I loved, Loved, LOVED this book! This kind of fantasy isn't my usual kind of read but I love Kristin’s writing. She has an incredible world building ability and you get sucked into the story from the very first page. The whole Grace idea is fantastic, totally original and it leads to a lot of depth from Graced characters.

A Grace isn't clear as black and white, and it's not always what it seems. A Grace can have an impact on many abilities the characters possesses which provides a whole new element for character's growth.
Being seeked and used, being feared by your family and neighbors is something that builds character and can strengthen or weaken you depending on your personality.

I really loved the characters Kristin created, they are all unique and I found myself fond of almost every one of them, I mean I'm not gonna fall for the villains will I?

Katsa is extraordinary by her internal debates, her self perception and her fight to become a better person, she takes some really heart-breaking decisions along her journey, but her strength and determination will help her make it through while trying to protect the ones she loves.

I have a very soft spot for Po, he is so special, a great person and such a great complement for Katsa. He is hiding a big secret that threatens to destroy life as he knows it at any moment and you find yourself praying everything goes well.

I liked the end, at about 80 pages before the end I was scared it might not wrap-up like I wanted cause it seemed there so few pages left and so many things to do but Kristin managed to cook us a very nice end. It's not your typical happily ever after but it was very credible.

This novel is definitely a must read, I read Fire (the second book published in this series) before this one, and I am amazed once again by Kristin's ability to tell a marvelous story. I have high hopes for Bitteblue, but I'm really sad I'm gonna have to wait until April 2011 to have more of Kristin Cashore's fine writing.

Teaser Tuesday - Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Today's quote is from the fabulous Graceling by Kristin Cashore, I'm only 25% in the book but geez it's good!
I chose a quote that made me laugh out lout!

Sighing, Helda carried the dress from the batting room.
"It would look stunning, My lady," she called, "with your dark hair and your eyes."
Katsa yanked one of the more stubborn knotsin her hair. She spoke to the bubbles gathered on the surface of the water, "If there's anyone I wish to stun at dinner, I'll hit him in the face." -p.50

I mean how good is that quote? Priceless!

Trailer Thursday - Graceling & Fire by Kristin Cashore

This meme was inspired both by Dark Fairie Tales and Stop, Drop and Read.

I read Fire and LOVED it, also bought Graceling but haven't read it yet.
Fire was awesome so I'm assuming Graceling will be to, so I would like to introduce you to them!

Fire by Kristin Cashore (ARC)

"It is not a peaceful time in the Dells.
In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves.
This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her." -Book cover

An epic medieval adventure mixed with the right amount of fantasy and suspense to have you craving for more! This is what you'll get when reading Fire.

Fire is a monster. A being of extreme beauty able to mind control any weak or willing mind in her surroundings. She is the last human monster and many try to make sure there will never be someone else like her by ending her days.

In a time of war, there are more important matters though. Fire have been summoned by King Nash to help him in an imminent war, but will she help him? Her powers are so terrible, how could she use them?

I really loved the book in so many ways! Fire is one lovely women. A monster yes, but so much more then that. A great mind, great morality, decided to do the greater good even though she has a shady past.
Many very interesting characters are involved during her journey and I found myself very fond of Brigan. Mysterious, handsome, talented and so out of reach!
Kristin bring us so deep in the medieval atmosphere that you feel right in the middle of the action all the time, I could totally picture myself in a stone castle plotting to put an end to the kingdom's enemies.

I haven't read Graceling yet (ordered it right as I finished Fire though) so I can't tell you how Fire fits in. I read the resume of Graceling and I'm kinda sad because it doesn't seem like I can expect to see Fire or Brigan in that novel. Hopefully I am wrong!
Fire release in September or October depending on your country, but you gotta pre-order that book! Every fantasy lover out there will fall for that book hands down!
