Author Interview: Gabrielle Harbowy Discusses Her New Novel Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith + GIVEAWAY

Today we have a very special Q&A post with the author of Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith, Gabrielle Harbowy plus a giveaway of her new novel!

pathfinder tales gears of faith by gabrielle harbowySynopsis:

"Pathfinder is the world's bestselling tabletop role-playing game―now adapted as a series of novels.

Keren is a sworn knight of Iomedae, proper and disciplined in every way. Her girlfriend, Zae, is the opposite―a curious gnome cleric of the clockwork god, who loves nothing more than the chaos of her makeshift hospitals. When a powerful evil artifact is stolen from a crusader stronghold, both knight and gnome are secretly sent to the great city of Absalom to track down the stolen bloodstone.

Sure, they may not be the most powerful or experienced members of their organizations, but that’s the whole point―with legendary champions and undead graveknights battling at every turn in their race to recover the stone, who’ll notice one young knight and her gnome? All they have to do is stay alive long enough to outsmart a thief capable of evading both gods and heroes."

1) Kara: Obviously, you love Pathfinder and this really shows in your level of detail in descriptions and imagination in the book. What is your perfect character and how does he/she differ from Keren and Zae?

Gabrielle: My perfect character is one I’ve never played before!

In writing this novel and, essentially, having to play all the characters and understand the mechanics of a lot of different classes and options, I’ve definitely learned to step outside my comfort zone. I love playing healers and support classes, and that’s what I’ve always gravitated toward in tabletop RPGs, but now I want to dig into all the options and try everything at least twice.

I don’t roleplay Keren or Zae at the table, mostly because I don’t want to have to keep novel continuity separate from in-game continuity. “Remember the time we-- oh, right. That didn’t actually happen.” It would make things twice as complicated for me if they diverged! My current Pathfinder characters are a haunted Oracle whose belongings get shifted around by the spirits of everyone she’s killed; a very impatient Tian human fighter (of the “I respect your desire to negotiate, but can’t we just kill all the things?” variety); and a Tengu (ravenfolk) mage.

2) Kara: What advice would you give readers and gamers new to Pathfinder and Pathfinder Tales?

Gabrielle: Pathfinder is a collaborative game and Pathfinder players are very helpful people, so don’t be concerned about knowing every rule before you show up at the table. You can use a premade character to get a feel for things without getting bogged down by multiple books’ worth of rules, or to try different classes to you find one you enjoy. It’s totally acceptable to say “Okay, how do I roll for that?” or “Where do I find that on my character sheet?” or “Here’s what I want my character to do. Can I do that? What’s the best way to go about it?” and everyone will chime in to help you do your best. Pathfinder works best when the party is a team that strategizes together, so new blood is always welcome because it brings new possibilities to the table.

For readers new to Pathfinder Tales, my advice is basically the same. The novels might require you to piece some things together from context, but the novels (or series of novels within the Pathfinder Tales line) are engineered to stand alone. They’re enhanced by knowledge of the game lore, because you’ll recognize things and appreciate references, but specific knowledge of the game isn’t necessary to enjoy the novels. They’re set all over the known Pathfinder world, and they’re all meant to be accessible starting points.

3) Kara: There's quite a bit of in-depth mechanical description in Gears of Faith, and the Clockwork Cathedral is amazing! How did you come up with that and the descriptions for the clockwork devices?

Gabrielle: One of the exciting things about writing tie-in fiction is that you can take something that fascinates you, that’s just a concept or a couple of sentences in a reference book, and really flesh it out and make it your own. I find the Clockwork Cathedral fascinating, and I had a lot of fun translating its bare bones into a living, functioning building. The shape of the Cathedral was already in the canon, as were the giant gears that swing down at varying times to block off the hallways, and the fact that there are no amenities inside. I got to think realistically about what that would mean, what it would feel like and look like, and describe that through the wonder and incredulity of someone new to it all. I particularly enjoyed exploring the contrast between Zae’s first impressions, being overwhelmed by the eccentricity of the place, and the total nonchalance of her fellow students for whom it’s become commonplace.

Sometimes the ideas drive themselves. Without giving away too much, I’ll say that, for example, when a character says something, “be careful not to get stuck inside the gears,” it becomes kind of necessary and obvious that, at some point, someone’s going to be in danger of getting stuck inside the gears!

For the mechanical devices, I did a lot of research. I looked at spells in the game and thought about which of them were practical to house inside of objects and then activate, and how to make the object and its activation method appropriate to the device.

The failed devices were the easier ones to come up with than the working ones, because that just meant taking things to their logical extremes. I wasn’t bound by practicality. Like, take the Bleed spell. That spell means that someone who’s dying and has been stabilized, becomes unstable and resumes bleeding out. Well, you don’t need to go to the effort of magic to craft an object that can do that, when you could just use a sword!

Some of the more whimsical devices didn’t make it into the book, just because I had to strike a balance between creating fun objects and remembering that the characters were under a bit of a time crunch to solve the central mystery...but I’m holding on to the blueprints of those objects for future use.

4) Kara: I loved the diversity in this book! Zae was my favorite character because she's unique, smart, and quirky, and yet I admired Keren's inner drive. Their relationship seems like a good partnership. What did you most want to convey to your readers through the diversity of characters and relationships?

Gabrielle: Thank you! What I really wanted most was to normalize the diversity. Here’s a couple who’ve been together a while and aren’t in the new romance phase of a relationship, and they’ve obviously made it work. It’s not a coming out story, because coming out isn’t the only story. And there’s no way to dismiss it with “well, it won’t last.” It’s lasted. It doesn’t matter that they’re both female, or that they’re not both human, or whatever. They’re people having genuine emotions and genuine quirks and flaws. All of the things that might get them looked at askance in our real world just aren’t a big deal.

I have a transgendered main supporting character, and again it’s not a big deal. There are also a few non-binary characters sprinkled in conspicuously (one “extra” in the Clockwork Cathedral is a male gnome in eyeliner and a skirt), and no one cares, singles them out, or places different expectations on them.

In our world, people are still marginalized for these things. And because they’re not what our society sees as its default, it’s rare for people who identify in diverse ways to be able to find themselves depicted in fiction. My intent was that diverse readers would find that perspective refreshing, and readers who hadn’t come across much of that sort of thing might find their horizons widened, and their stereotypes and assumptions challenged. It’s not the big reveal or the punch line or the plot twist. It’s just people being honest with themselves about who they are and/or who they love.

5) Kara: What was your favorite part about bringing the game to life?

Gabrielle: I love Pathfinder’s take on gnomes, which was why I wanted to feature one in the first place. In Pathfinder, gnomes crave novelty and don’t have many hangups about how they get it. They’re long-lived fae-based creatures so they have an outsider perspective on humanity. I had a great time diving into the gnomish mindset. I’ve come to love Zae’s skewed perspective on the mostly human world around her. She gives me an opportunity to take things to their literal extreme, to question things people don’t question, to think about the names of things, and to approach a fascinating world with the kind of wide-eyed wonder that we all eventually lose when we live in a place and see it every day.

In “Inheritance,” the pre-Gears of Faith short story (linked below), Zae explains: “...it's not just [naïve] curiosity. It's informed curiosity. I know how big and complicated and dangerous the world is. What fascinates me is all that variety—how the world can be so full of parts that are so complex and weird and beautiful, and interconnected. I'm not fascinated by birds in flight because I think flight is mystical and impossible, I'm fascinated because I understand how it works, and how it works is fascinating. That's the kind of wonder I see in the world.”

6) Kara: What's next for Keren and Zae? Will we find out how they met?

Gabrielle: Maybe! They’ve hinted at it, but the whole story might come to light in a future tale. In the meantime, you can check out my short story “Inheritance” (free on Paizo’s website) and see how they acquired Appleslayer, Zae’s brave steed. As for what’s next, I think Keren and Zae are going to stay in Absalom a while, but both of them are at the mercy of their callings. Who knows where they might end up!

7) Kara: What's next for you? Will you be writing more books with Paizo?

Gabrielle: My next project is a contemporary (not fantasy / science fiction) young adult novel called Hearts Are Jerks, which is about a teenage girl and her adventures navigating polyamory. I’m in revisions on this now, and I hope to be sending it around to agents this summer. It’s also an attempt to normalize the diverse, and give voice to people who don’t get to see themselves and their relationships represented in fiction in positive ways. After that, I’ll be writing the sequel to Of the Essence, which is an urban fantasy novel I wrote in Ed Greenwood’s “Hellmaw” shared-world setting. Would I like to write more Keren and Zae? Definitely. And I’m looking forward to seeing what stories inspire me in Paizo’s forthcoming Starfinder setting, as well.

Thank you, Gabrielle, for answering my questions about Gears of Faith! I will definitely be looking out for your YA novel! Also, many thanks to TOR for sending us the book to feature and for offering a giveaway!

Interview with Morgan Rhodes + Giveaway

I'm a big fan of The Falling Kingdoms series and I am thrilled to host Morgan Rhodes on the blog to celebrate the release of Gathering Darkness today! Please welcome her warmly :)

--------------------
1. I’ll start by letting you sell this wonderful series of yours. What would you say to someone who hasn't started the series yet?

I’d say: Do you like books with magic, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and kickass characters? Do you enjoy heroes who do bad things for the right reasons and villains

who do good things for the wrong reasons? Star-crossed, forbidden romance? Family drama? A tapestry of intrigue and deception and backstabbing, all in the pursuit of power? Characters who will die for love and characters who will kill for it? And, say, the odd decapitation and/or elemental disaster? Well...you definitely need to give Falling Kingdoms a try!

2. I'm a huge fan of your series, and since third books are often game changers in a series, can you tease a bit with the impact this book will have on the rest of the series?

Book 3 is certainly a game changer in the fact that a decision made by a certain character near the end of the book will affect everything going forward. Plus, events will be put in place that necessitate traveling to lands apart from Mytica in book four. If I tell you more than that it would totally be a spoiler! ;)

3. With so many young hearts at play in Gathering Darkness, can we hope for a bit of romance despite the dire circumstances?

Romance definitely takes more of a front seat in Gathering Darkness and emotions rise to the forefront. Perhaps dire circumstances brings out the inner romantic in my characters! But I do think that romance plays a bigger part in book 3 and in book 4 it’ll be ramped up even more!

4. Is there a tentative title for book 5? And a release date?

Ah... that is a question for next year! I’m only just working on book four right now, which does have a title, but I can’t tell you yet! :) Pretty sure this will be a December 2015 release, which means book 5 will likely be out December 2016!

You caught me there! I meant to say book 4 lol damn typos!

5. I have no choice but to ask about your new series, A Book of Spirits and Thieves. What can you tell us about it?

A BOOK OF SPIRITS AND THIEVES (out June 23, 2015) is the first in a companion trilogy to Falling Kingdoms. It follows three main viewpoint characters, two in our

contemporary world, and one in Mytica, a thousand years before the events in Falling Kingdoms.

In our world, there is a secret society headed by a mysterious leader who seeks an ancient, unreadable book filled with magic. The book falls into the hands of two sisters whose lives are changed forever from the moment they touch it. Meanwhile, in Mytica, we follow a young ghost-buster whose path crosses with the Goddess Valoria’s who needs his assistance to locate a lost treasure. Soon the threads of my main characters, here and in Mytica, begin to intertwine in unexpected ways.

The trilogy will be perfect for anyone who hasn’t read Falling Kingdoms – there’s no need to read it in order to understand what’s going on here. However, if you are a reader of my main series, there are tons of Easter Eggs in ABOSAT about the goddesses, the myths and legends of their magic, and how Mytica was split into three separate kingdoms. Also, one surprising reveal that fills in a lot of blanks of the FK world, but, again, spoilers! You’ll have to read it and see! ;)

Thank you so much Morgan for stopping by! I am know that much more excited for ABOSAT, I had not realized it's a spin-off!

 About Gathering Darkness:

The seeds of revolution have been sown…but in Mytica the lust for power reigns supreme.

THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo slays with sweetness—and a secret that might control Lucia’s magic—as she and vengeful Jonas lead the hunt for the all-powerful Kindred.

THE KRAESHIANS join the fray. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the vast kingdom across the Silver Sea, prove to be just as ruthless as they are charming as they manipulate their way to victory.

THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally, in the flesh, with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia’s powers to unveil the Kindred.

And which side will Prince Magnus choose, now that he’s been betrayed by everyone he’s ever loved?

The Mesmerized Blog Tour: Interview with Rhiannon Frater + Giveaway

The Mesmerized Blog Tour Banner

I'm a big fan of Rhiannon Frater so when I was approached to host for her blog tour, I couldn't refuse. This tour is for her latest release, The Mesmerized, which is a pretty awesome stand-alone book. You can read my review hereI'm really greateful she took some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few interview questions. Please welcome her warmly!

-------------

Las Vegas is an interesting choice for the setting of an apocalypse novel. I love the idea (and the city), but what made you chose Las Vegas? Did it involve a lot of "research"?

Well, I was visiting Las Vegas when I had a very intense visual pop into my head of people walking in synch down Las Vegas Boulevard and into the desert. At that moment, the trip became all about research. While I was there, I mapped out a lot of the movements of the mesmerized and wrote quite a bit. Happily, I have a husband who gets this whole writing thing. I told him some of my ideas and he walked around with me as I plotted things out.

Your main character, Minji is obviously a strong and capable woman. Is there a particular reason why you decided to have an American-Korean as a main character?

My characters just tend to appear. I knew that the main character in the book was going to be a tattoo artist from Austin. That much was certain. But she remained out of focus and very fuzzy as I was piecing together the main storyline. I struggled to get a grasp on her, but she was very elusive. One day in the grocery store, I saw an Asian young woman with a ton of tattoos and dressed very similarly to my main character. That’s when Minji snapped into focus. I had wrongfully assumed she was going to be Latina or white. Minji being of Irish-Korean descent is an aspect to who she is, but it isn’t her defining characteristic even when others try to make it be. She does face some very heavy racism and suspicion because of her appearance. It added an element to the story that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

Conspiracy theorists would take great pleasure in analyzing what happens in THE MESMERIZED. Personally, do you think something similar or terrorist-like could ever happen to us in real life?

Well, the reason for the event is not a terrorist act in the traditional sense, but that being said, I think we all fear something akin to the mesmerized. Contamination of water supplies or the air itself doesn’t seem that farfetched. The idea of a terrorist organization using something like that to drug or poison a city’s population is not a new one, but it is certainly terrifying. It makes sense in the story that people automatically assume it’s a terrorist attack.

I really felt Minji's anxiety when she was trying to get her family back together in the opening scenes, and I thought the writing was brilliant and so captivating. Did you find it difficult to write this scene, especially since there were so many pages without any dialogue?

Strangely, I didn’t even think about the fact that there wasn’t much dialogue until it was pointed out to me by the beta readers. I see my stories like movies inside my mind, so I was just intent on getting all the imagery and emotions onto the page. She’s alone in her immunity and frantic to keep her small family alive and together, and that was my focus.

The media plays some role in your story. Do you think the American media is prone to over-exaggerates some events?

The media tends to ignore real news events for things that will get them bursts of high ratings. We see it over and over again. In the story, the media can’t cover the story the way they are used to doing, so they’re a bit lost. You can see they don’t know how to really cope with the event alongside the rest of the world. They are even at a loss as to what to advise people. One of my characters uses the media to his advantage because he knows they’ll jump on a chance to add a dynamic element to their coverage.

Honestly, I really enjoyed THE MESMERIZED and the overall theme. Do you have any recommendations for us lovers of post-apocalyptic and dystopian novels?

Well, of my own books I would recommend The Last Bastion of the Living. I’ve enjoyed a lot of young adult dystopian books recently. Of course there is The Hunger Games, but I also really liked The Uglies, Matched, and The Breeders.

What projects are you currently working on?

Right now I’m finishing up two series. In Darkness We Must Abide has been coming out in serial form, and I’m about to put out the final two episodes. Then I’m going to retool all three seasons into a trilogy. I’m also working on The Lament of the Vampire Bride, the final book in the Dark Rebirth trilogy.

After that, I have a few ideas banging around in my head that I’m very excited to dive into.

Thanks Rhiannon for the visit today and for answering all my questions!

If you want to know more about Rhiannon's The Mesmerized, here's the scoop:
the mesmerizedIt is silence, not screams of terror, which proclaims the end of the world…

Minji Nordim is vacationing in Las Vegas with her small family when she witnesses the beginning of a terrifying apocalypse. When humanity is transformed into mindless drones by a terrifying supernatural event only Minji appears to be immune.

Thousands die instantly, but the other affected people are drawn to the Nevada desert. Nothing stands in the way of the mesmerized. Not fire, not heights, not rubble. As the bodies pile in the streets and the relentless wave of the mesmerized plods into the deadly desert, Minji is trapped in a burning city attempting to rescue her family.

When Minji encounters other unaffected survivors, they band together to survive in a city that is crumbling all around them. With no hope of rescue and the event slowly spreading across the world, Minji and the others must decide who to save among the mesmerized and where to go before the city is in ashes.

Even more unsettling is that Minji senses that the force behind the event is observing them…

Can one woman save her family and the world?

PHE - Interview with Sara Raasch + Giveaway

Snow like ashes

I am super happy to host debut author Sara Raasch today! I am totally in love with Snow Like Ashes and I invite you to read on and discover more about the series! Please welcome Sara warmly :)

PHEf

1- Snow Like Ashes has a super unique territorial system, how would you explain it to someone who hasn't read the book yet, and where did that spark of inspiration come from?

There are four kingdoms stuck in eternal seasons -- Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring -- and four kingdoms that cycle through the normal rhythms of nature (they have all four seasons instead of just one). It is confusing to be sure, but I try not to dump too much about every kingdom into SLA (or Book 2 or 3) because I want to give readers time to absorb the differences of each land. And it's more fun for me to get to explore each kingdom thoroughly :)

The inspiration for these kingdoms came initially for the Season Kingdoms. I always hated how winter as a season got a bad reputation, so I wanted to do a winter kingdom of "good guys." The rest just kind of spiraled out from there!

2- Any person who lives with all four seasons once taught of getting rid of winter (I know I do!), but in SLA it's quite literal. How did you come to the decision to destroy that territory over another one?

That's how the story has always been (which sounds like a cop-out, I know) -- ever since I was a wee one, the tale has been the same: a girl, Meira, struggling to free the captured Kingdom of Winter from Spring. I love the poetry of it, giving a threat to each season's progression.

3- I can't help it, I gotta ask how Autumn would celebrate Halloween?

Ha! Hmm...probably quite similar to how we in the US celebrate it! Their culture has much of the same things we have in autumn -- the same crops, climate, etc. So pumpkins and corn and apples and cool, crisp weather!

4- If Meira could pick any costume she'd want, what would she wear?

I think she'd have to go as Xena -- chakrams unite :D

5- What's the most fun you've personally had on Halloween?

Trick or treating as a kid was always super fun. There's something magical about holidays as a child that kind of wears off when you grow up -- I miss the excitement of dressing up and strolling around my neighborhood!

6- Now, I must ask, is there a tentative title for the second book yet?

There is a title for Book 2! And Book 3! But they're both still secret ;)

Thank you so much for having me, Cindy! And Happy Halloween!

Thank you Sara for visiting us!

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. PHE - Interview with Nikki Kelly + Giveaway

PHEf

I'm really happy to welcome Nikki Kelly to the blog today to celebrate her newly published novel, LAILAH. It was released earlier this month by the publisher Feiwel and Friends, but as a Wattpad sensation, LAILAH already had a following. Nikki Kelly joins us today to answer a few questions and discuss her book. Also, don't forget to check out the giveaway at the bottom of the post.

———————

Hello Nikki and welcome to the blog.  I'm glad we can chat about your newly published novel, "Lailah". To someone who doesn't know what to expect, how would you best describe your debut novel?

Lailah is the first book in The Styclar Saga and is YA PNR.

The story focuses on Lailah as she goes on a journey of self-discovery, uncovering the truth of ‘what’ she is, while trying to figure out ‘who’ she is. The novel is full of mystery and action, and there is a heavy romance at the center of the story, but Lailah’s existence and her world is veiled with dark undertones.

There are themes of light and dark, and it goes some way to challenge preconceptions and assumptions that we make about people and the world. The ideas around the worlds/dimensions in the story are a spin on traditional mythology and the concept of Heaven and Hell.

The synopsis of Lailah sounds quite dark and the cover looks creepy (but beautiful). Do you think your novel can be read by anyone, or will dark themes deter some readers?

I am ecstatic about the cover! It would have been all too easy for the designers to put an uber-pretty girl in a big dress in the middle, so I was thrilled that the fantastic creative team came up with the cover that they did. It perfectly depicts the tone of the story, with our heroine at the center, dressed normally, and with a light cascading down from above, but creepy hands grabbing her from below. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then this cover surpasses that and manages to encapsulate the entire 115,000 words of the story!

To answer your question about darker themes, I look at it like this: To know happiness, to a degree you have to experience sadness in your life, which in turn makes the highs so much higher. To a degree the same can be said for the darkness in this book. To truly appreciate the idea of light and what that means, we have to experience and know the opposite end of the spectrum. While there are some dark moments, they are crucial to the story. I don’t think it should deter readers; the book has gone through an editorial process and been categorized as YA, and the professionals know what is ‘too much’ or if something goes ‘too far’, so I trust their judgment on keeping the darker themes well-balanced.

Lailah is the first book of The Styclar Saga. What exactly is "Styclar"? And how many books do you anticipate the Saga will have?

In the books, Styclar-Plena is the name of the ‘First Dimension’ – a world created by and existing in light, born from a crystal that sits at the center of the world. Styclar-Plena is an anagram of the words ‘Crystal Plane’. It was only right to name The Saga after the First Dimension; to a point, everything that has happened and will happen has spawned from the actions of the beings from that world.

The Saga is set to be three books. Book 2 (Gabriel) is due for release Fall ‘15 and Book 3 (Untitled) is due Fall ‘16. In addition I have been writing various short stories, both for digital release and for print release, to go along with the main titles.

Is Halloween recognized in the paranormal world you created for Lailah? If so, how do people celebrate?

Lailah is actually set over the month of December and over the Christmas period, so we just missed Halloween! In the first book Lailah stays in the Second Dimension, which is Earth as we know it in current times, so it would be a recognized holiday.

Were there any special challenges when writing about total opposites like Vampires and Angels?

My Vampires and Angels are a little different to what has come before. In fact, the very idea of what a ‘Vampire’ and what an ‘Angel’ is – what our preconception of those beings are – is exactly the reason I wanted to include them. One is traditionally very ‘dark’ (there are different generations of Vampires in my books) and the other is traditionally celestial and ethereal, which is perfect, because it gave me the opportunity to explore the dark, the light and the shades of grey in-between, while putting a new spin on the beings themselves and the worlds from which they emerged.

Your experience from a self-published author on Wattpad to an author published with Feiwel and Friends is impressive and admirable. In short, can you describe the process? Also, if you had to do it over again, would you change anything?

Awww that’s very kind of you to say! I wrote my story over 18 months in my spare time. It was shortly after that I discovered Wattpad, and I uploaded my story serially in blocks of seven chapters a week over the month of December, so the readers would feel as though they were in ‘real time’ with the events in the story. The book became popular very quickly and within six months had over a million reads and thousands upon thousands of votes and comments! This was amazing for me and made me feel more confident with what I had written, due to all the love being sent my way through the magical wires of wi-fi! Growing an audience early on really helped, and in many ways it gave some assurance to the traditional publisher –Feiwel & Friends, who picked it up – that despite the ‘supernatural trend’ falling out of favor, there was still very much an audience who still wanted to read about these types of beings! If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t change a single thing.

Now on to some personal Halloween questions:

What's your favourite part of fall/autumn?

The leaves, when they fall off the tree! Crisp and golden, I enjoy kicking them and watching my Pug and Chihuahua roll around the piles in the park!

What is your most memorable Halloween costume?

I’m English, and we don’t celebrate Halloween the same way the US and Canada do! In fact, sadly, it’s not really a big thing here at all. That said, I think the costume I probably dressed in most growing up was a witch with a broomstick! Having said all that, as I became a teen and went to Halloween parties, I often dressed up as pop stars, such as Baby Spice!

PHE - Interview With Beth Bernobich + Giveaway

PHEf

For today's PHE post, I had the pleasure of interviewing Beth Bernobich once again. I've been a huge fan of hers, ever since she released PASSION PLAY, the first book in her fantasy series (if you're a fan of high fantasy + romance, I highly recommend it). Her most recent book, THE TIME ROADS, was release last week but since I only received my review copy late last week, I haven't had the chance to read it all. I'm about half way through though, and so far it's great. I can't wait to share my thoughts in a review.

For now, here's the interview and giveaway.

———————

Hello Beth and welcome back to the blog.  I'm glad you were able to take time out of your schedule to talk about your new novel, "The Time Roads". To someone who doesn't know what to expect, how would you best describe your new novel?

The Time Roads is very different from my previous books. For one thing, it's not a novel, but four novellas that link and overlap with each other.  And instead of a secondary world fantasy, this one takes place in what looks like our own early 20th century, but where Ireland is an empire, England is a Dependency, and the map of Europe is very different from the one we know. It's also a world where prime numbers have special properties that make it possible for scientists to manipulate time.

Your previous series, River of Souls, would probably fall under the epic fantasy genre. How would you categorize "The Time Roads"?

Alternate history. I don't go into the points of departure in the book, since that's not its focus, but in the history of The Time Roads, Ireland allied itself with Denmark and Scotland to defeat the English in 1169.

Were there any special challenges in writing this book?

Oh dear, yes. Naturally I needed to do a lot of research about the history of the time period before I could change that history. And I had to decide how religions and technology had changed, and in what ways they remained similar to the real world. But what made this book especially difficult were the time fractures and the parallel time streams. I had to make a giant chart of what happened when, in which country, and in which time stream. And I had to know what each character remembered of the different time streams.

Was it difficult letting go of the River of Soul characters/world?

I'm not sure I've actually let go yet. :)

But to be honest, no. I wrote the first of the novellas for this book over twelve years ago, and I worked on the other stories in parallel to my River of Souls books, so it felt more like talking to two good friends, rather than letting one go.

The title of the book references time. Should we expect time travelling in this story?

There is time travel, yes, but more. Time in this world has fracture points--weak spots that scientists are mapping in order to jump into the future and the past. But altering events in the past can cause time to splinter and divide, and undoing those events can heal the fractures in unexpected ways.

Do you plan to write more books for your River of Souls series?

I do. I have one novel already written called The Edge of the Empire that takes place 500 years before Passion Play, where Ilse and Raul meet in a previous lifetime. In this one, Ilse is Anna Zhdanov, a scholar and bonded servant, sent by her master to recover an important Imperial artifact. Raul is Andreas Koszenmarc, the son of a nobleman turned pirate, who is searching for that same artifact for reasons of his own.

I would also love to write two more books about what happens in Károví and Morennioù after the events in Allegiance.

What are you reading right now?

I am re-reading one of my favorite, favorite series: The Queen's Thief quartet by Megan Whalen Turner. These books are as perfect as you can get.

AutumnView beth bernobich

What's your favourite part of fall/autumn?

I love the hint of chill in the morning air, and how the sky looks different--sharper and clearer, and the blue much more vivid than in summer. We live on a miniature lake, opposite a state park, and when fall arrives, the waters of the lake reflect the changing colors of the leaves. I could sit on our back patio for hours, just to drink in the view.

Thank you again for participating in our event. I look forward to reading The Time roads.

Thank you for inviting me!

Darkness Possessed tour: Interview with Stephanie Rowe + giveaway

TOUR BUTTON_StephanieRowe_DARKNESSPOSSESSSED_BlogTour

Stephanie Rowe is visiting the blog today to celebrate the release of DARKNESS POSSESSED, the latest book in her Order of the Blade series. I'm sure you guys are eager to see what she has to say so let's get right into it!

---------------------

Hi, Stephanie, and welcome to Team Tynga's Reviews. To start, can you please tell us a bit about DARKNESS POSSESSED, the newest book in the series?

Darkness Possessed is the ninth book in my series about ancient immortal warriors and the women they are meant to be with. It's dark, sexy, dangerous, and passionate, filled with intense twists and turns that will leave you hunkered down on the couch, gasping for breath. Zach Roderick has been haunted by a tormented past that has stripped him of his powers. In order to save the woman he loves and his teammate, he must face his past and the darkness that lies within him. Rhiannon Diaz barely escaped a decade of brutal slavery, but he is still hunting her. The only way she can ever be free is to return and face her worst nightmare, a battle she can never hope to win. Alone, Zach and Rhiannon have no chance. Together…they still don't…or do they?

Can readers follow DARKNESS POSSESSED if they haven't read any/all of the series?

Each Order of the Blade book is a standalone plot, so they are intended to be read as standalones. That being said, the two main guys in this book, Zach and Thano, have been in all the prior books, so you will have a greater understanding of their background if you're read some of the other books, but it's not necessary.

How do you keep the series fresh nine books in? Do you have any tips about sustaining a series?

This is a great question. It is critical to keep a series fresh, but you have to stay close enough to the original series as to not to alienate readers. Sometimes, I will bring in a vastly different setting to change it up. This time, I did a major shift in how I treated the sheva bond, which is the soulmate bond between a Calydon warrior and his woman. I actually wasn't sure how readers would feel about it, but it was a risk I had to take because the new direction was right for the story. Then, at the end of this book, I create a spin off new series with two of the characters, and I have the Order of the Blade characters spin off in a new direction as well, although it won't be a new series. To keep a series going, an author has to be brave enough to push the envelope in new directions.

Will there be more stories about The Order of the Blade?

Absolutely. In this book, we get to know a new group of warriors with a slightly different mission and slightly more attitude. Each of them will have their story told as well.

Time to get personal! What's your...

...biggest vice? Brownies and chocolate chip cookies

...favourite movie? One of my favorite all-time movies is The Princess Bride. It's seriously a brilliant movie. You haven't seen it, grab it off Netflix now!

...funniest memory? The day I accidentally peed on the tennis court during gym class at school because I was laughing so hard. Whoops.

...most dreaded activity? Facing a blank page on a new book. It's terrifying.

Thanks for visiting us, Stephanie, and enjoy the rest of your tour!

Thank you so much for having me!

Here's the scoop on DARKNESS POSSESSED:

Now, his teammate's life depends on Zach resurrecting the fire that once burned within him. As he undertakes a battle he has no way to win, he is derailed by a tempestuous beauty that awakens in him the dark desires that destroyed him once before.

The scars etched on Rhiannon Diaz's soul are so deep that she will never again be free. The once-powerful guardian is facing her last and greatest battle, and failure means a return to a sexual enslavement that is far worse than death. Fireborn blog tour: Interview with Keri Arthur

Fireborn blog tour banner

I have to be honest, moments like this are part of the reason I love blogging. The one and only Keri Arthur, whose books I adore, is visiting Team Tynga's Reviews and I got to interview her!! If that's not an amazing moment, I don't know what is. I've been a major fan for years and it was incredibly hard for me not to fangirl all over her but she is here to promote FIREBORN, her newest release and the start of what is sure to be an amazing new series.

Please join me in welcoming the inestimably talented Keri Arthur!

---------------------

First of all, thank you for visiting Team Tynga's Reviews and congrats on starting a new series! What's the most exciting part about kicking off a new series?

Thanks! And thanks for inviting me here to chat.

I think the most exciting thing about starting a new series is the ability to follow the journey of not only brand new characters, but to build a brand new world. I know that’s a bit of a standard answer, but you need to remember that between the Riley Jenson and the Dark Angel novels, I’ve spent 16 books in the one world, and I’m loving the ability to stretch as a writer.

How would you describe FIREBORN if you only had ten words?

I’m never very good at doing something like that! Lol. Um... In a world where supernaturals aren’t entirely accepted, a phoenix battles to save mankind. Nope, that’s fourteen. Told you I wasn’t very good!

What inspired you to write a series based on phoenixes?

I think it mainly stemmed from the desire to get away from both werewolves and vampires as main characters. As much as I love both, I just wanted to do something a little different. I spent hours trolling the net, looking at all sorts of supernatural beings--something I usually do when I’m researching for bad guys, not good. I kept stopping on references about phoenixes, and the idea of a character with the ability of being reborn from the ashes of their past just fired my imagination. Emberly was born  :)

All of your heroines are very confident, sexy women. How do you come up with some strong yet individual characters?

It’s very much a backlash of all the fantasy novels I used to read in the 70s and the 80s. You know the ones--the heroine was always tripping over, doing something dumb, or in need of rescuing. It drove me up the wall. Sure, not every female character in fantasy fiction needs to kick arse, but surely it wouldn’t have hurt the (mainly male) writers at the time to write one or two capable females? You have no idea how relieved I was to find writers like Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey.

Who are your favourite characters to write dialogue for (in this or any of your other series)?

Actually, my favourite all time character to write dialogue for is, believe it or, a sword. Or rather, the demon who gives the sword life. Amaya was not supposed to be such a strong presence in the Dark Angels series, but once she got page time, she was not giving it up.  I had enormous fun thinking up snark for her.

Will Emberly's world overlap with Riley and/or Risa's? Can we expect any familiar characters to crop up, even just for a cameo?

I’m afraid there’s no chance of that happening, because Fireborn is set in a completely different world to the Riley and Risa’s. Yes, it’s still Melbourne (that old ‘write what you know’ chestnut) but it’s a very different, somewhat darker Melbourne. There’s definitely no werewolf clubs in this version!

Melbourne is very much a character in your books, including FIREBORN. What are some of your must-see or must-do attractions in the area?

Melbourne is the most European of all Australian cities and, like France, you’ll find restaurants and cafes everywhere, most of them with tables and umbrellas out on the sidewalks so people can enjoy the sunshine (or get protection from the famously unreliable weather here) and people watch. If you’re coming to Melbourne, allow plenty of time to explore all the interconnecting little laneways with their amazing variety of shops, and sampling some truly fantastic cuisine. We do love our food, coffee and tea here. Then head off down the Great Ocean Road for some spectacular scenery, or head on over to the Yarra Valley, where some of the best wine makers in the country are located--and eat and drink some more while you’re there  :)

How many stories do you have planned for the Souls of Fire series?

I have two planned at this point, but there will be more after that. I just don’t know how many as yet, because I usually need to be several novels into a series before I have some idea.

Finally, can you give us any exclusive teasers about what's to come? I'm so curious about everything, but especially about what's going on with Sam.

You do find out what is going on with Sam, but I’m afraid it’s going to take a couple of books. As for a teaser...let’s just say it’s connected with what happened to his brother.

Thanks very much for taking the time to answer my questions.

Thanks again for inviting me.  :)

Allegiance blog tour: Interview with Susannah Sandlin + giveaway

Allegiance Banner 450 x 169

I'm really excited about today's guest. I'm a huge fan of Susannah Sandlin/Suzanne Johnson and so I'm happy that Team Tynga's Reviews can take part in the tour for the Susannah's latest release, ALLEGIANCE, the fourth book in her Penton Legacy series. Read on to for my interview with Susannah and then enter the tour-wide giveaway!

---------------------

Hi, Susannah, and welcome back to Team Tynga's Reviews. So nice to have you back again. Last time you were on the blog, we chatted about STORM FORCE, and it's great to see you again for your newest release, ALLEGIANCE, which takes us back to Penton. What can our readers expect from ALLEGIANCE?

Allegiance by Susannah Sandlin (Penton Legacy #4)Thanks for having me back! ALLEGIANCE takes a dark(er) turn as the looming war strikes at the heart of the town just as Aidan’s community is trying to rebuild. At the same time, a couple of new characters come to town, including an eagle-shifter named Robin who was in STORM FORCE. Her interactions with the Penton crew, especially with Big Bad Mirren, are really a lot of fun. So there’s a good dose of humor woven in with the darkness.

How happy were you to get back into vampire business after switching toward shifters for STORM FORCE?

I really loved writing the shifters, but I missed my Penton vampires! So the idea of bringing a couple of the STORM FORCE characters (Robin and Nik) to Penton really let me have the best of both worlds and also expanded the overall worldbuilding of the Penton series.

I was worried we'd never get to see Cage's story after OMEGA. How did you decide to make him the main man in ALLEGIANCE?

I knew when OMEGA was half-written that Cage needed his own story. Plus, OMEGA left him in an awkward situation with one of the main series characters, Melissa, and I knew that had to be resolved. I’ll admit, I hadn’t originally planned on resolving the way I did but sometimes characters develop minds of their own! (Casts an accusatory glance at Robin.)

In our last interview, you mentioned you'd like to write a book for Robin and now she's front and centre in Penton! What inspired you to bring her (and other STORM FORCE characters) more directly into the Penton Legacy world? And does this mean we won't see any more Omega Force novels?

Storm Force by Susannah SandlinI’m not closing the door on Omega Force—there’s a lot of story potential there, so we’ll see what happens. I deliberately didn’t bring the character of Archer from STORM FORCE over to the new book because I thought he’d be a good hero if I did write another Omega Force book.

But as I was thinking about ALLEGIANCE and where the Penton story needed to go after OMEGA, I realized the Omega Force concept had to be brought fully into Penton, where it originated. So it made sense to bring Robin and Nik into the Penton world. As soon as I began thinking about how they might interact with the Penton crew, well, Robin kind of took over the book---because that’s the way Robin rolls! LOL. She’s such a fun character. And now, of course, Nik needs his story told.  :)

Can we expect more shifters or other supernaturals in Penton?

Definitely shifters, since that door has been opened now, and the shifter world has gotten dragged into the whole vampire mess. I’m not sure about other supernaturals, though. I don’t envision this becoming a big multiverse like I have in my Sentinels of New Orleans series (as Suzanne Johnson).

You've started what seems to be the next phase in Penton's struggle with ALLEGIANCE. Any teases about what's to come?

Well, I think Nik’s story needs telling. There are hints of it in ALLEGIANCE; he’s a really deep and interesting character to me. But the new phase of the Penton story lies with Aidan. By the end of ALLEGIANCE, he is in the midst of a real crisis, where he realizes the system he truly believed could be changed from the inside is more broken than he knew. He’s very angry. His enemies have a tendency to always think of Aidan as weak because he is a cautious man who believes in fair play, but they shouldn’t forget that he also is a very powerful vampire. There’s only so far he can be pushed before he pushes back. How he pushes back will determine the future of Penton.

To wrap up, I have a couple writing questions for you. What is most challenging about having multiple series running at the same time (with different publishers)?

River Road by Suzanne Johnson (Sentinel of New Orleans #2)It is sheer craziness sometimes! I have the urban fantasy series (Sentinels of New Orleans), the paranormal romance series (Penton), and a new romantic thriller series (Collectors) running concurrently, and they’re all very different. The biggest challenge to me is that I’m a very linear thinker, which means I don’t multitask well. I need to work on Book A, totally immersed from start to finish, and then move to Book B. I can’t bounce back and forth. With book deadlines overlapping, that’s not completely possible, but I do compartmentalize my time where I’m “faithful” to one book while I’m doing the actual writing.

What's the best piece of writing advice you've received?

To let go of perfectionism and give myself permission to write a sloppy first draft. That was hard because I always want to go back and edit and revise. But books never get finished when you do that. My first draft is so down and dirty I don’t even call it a first draft—I call it “Draft Zero.” It’s purely me working out plot details and usually runs about 60,000 words (a full novel is usually around 90k). Then I go through working in detail and massaging things to get to a real first draft. NOBODY sees Draft Zero—LOL.

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit us, Susannah, and enjoy the rest of your tour!

Thanks again for having me here today!
