Robyn Sheffield wants her life back.

As the only female stray in the US, she's had to deal with bloodlust, flashbacks, a lack of impulse control (which might not have anything to do with being a shifter), and weeks under house arrest for crimes she never meant to commit. But when she overhears the territorial council plotting to marry her off to an eligible tom? It's time for this chick to fly the coop.

Titus Alexander wants recognition.

He’s spent the past year carving his territory out of the Mississippi free zone, forming a community for strays exiled and forgotten by the US Prides. As the first stray Alpha, he’s sworn to bring the toms under his authority the rights, support, and respect that official confirmation from the council will bring. But then the council’s precious female stray sneaks into the free zone in the back of his car and demands sanctuary.

The council gives Titus a choice: send Robyn back and have his Pride acknowledged, or prepare for war. Citizenship for his men is within his grasp. So why is it so hard for him to let one rebellious tabby go?
Robyn has been on house arrest for what seems like eternity after she killed multiple shifters' murderers and now she's done. The first opportunity she has to escape presents itself in the form of a sexy stray and his unguarded Mercedes SUV. Robyn doesn't think of possible consequences (which is a pattern for her..) and dives into the car to hide and run away once she's in the free zone. Sexy Titus finds out though, and everything he is worked for is jeopardized by this young wild tabby.

I love Rachel Vincent, and I always recommend her Shifters series, but I must confess, while I enjoyed the Wildcats books, they are not as great as the Shifters series.

Robyn has a lot of potential, I like her spunk and how she fights for her ideas. BUT she comes off a bit childish and self-centered. She falls in love with Titus and decides to help him save his pack and all, but if she'd just taken her responsibility from the beginning, it would've been much easier. On the other hand, I like Titus. He is doing his best to be responsible, making the right decision but he also has a very passionate side I really appreciated.

I think one of the biggest elements that make me favor Shifters vs Wildcats is the action and the passion and the drive that was omnipresent in the Shifters series but cruelly absent in the Wildcats novels. Everything is about politics and what should or shouldn't be done. Lots of talking, and not much action. I really miss the down and dirty fights, the thrill of the chase, and the knock out suspense of not knowing if someone will die in the battle. I know Wildcats books take place in a time of 'peace' but I need to find that passion again! In the first book, Abby is more of a subdue female so I expected that from her, but Robyn is a firecracker so I was hoping I'd get more action and I was disappointed.

The intrigue was interesting though and I had a really strong opinion about what happened and who was the culprit (I won't go into details, don't want to give it away) and it turned out I was wrong. Which was an happy surprise. I liked how that particular mystery unfolded and I think it was very smart of Vincent to play it that way. On the other hand, The very conclusion, the way the characters dealt with the consequences seemed fake. I think Rachel felt like we should get somewhat of a happy ending but I just know the council wouldn't settle for that so I'm on the fence. *Tiny spoiler* I think Robyn should've gone back to the council and from there work out the details and consequences and that she'd have to work her way back to Titus in another book maybe.

I know my review isn't super positive and I did enjoy the book. It just didn't live up to my expectations. Will I read the third book? Yes, definitely. Would I recommend this series? If you love the Shifters series and want more of this world, yes. If you haven't read the Shifters series yet, then pick that one first!

Lion's Share by Rachel Vincent

Let me start this review by saying, FINALLY! I've been awaiting another Shifters book for so long, and it's finally here! For those who don't know, Lion's Share is the first book in a new spin-off series. The original series, Shifters, was Rachel's first published series and it was really awesome. This original series featured Faythe, Marc and Jace and from what I gathered, this new series will feature a different couple each novel, following the traditional paranormal romance series (Shifters was more Urban Fantasy). You don't NEED to read the Shifter's books to read Lion's Share, but I strongly suggest it. It will allow you to really grasp the nature and laws of the Shifters, Jace & Abby's pasts and honestly, it's heart-poundingly good, so why skip it?

Jace is everything a girl could hope for. He is swoon worthy, powerful & loyal. I was sooo very happy to learn this book would feature him, because let's be honest, he had more then his share of trouble, and unfortunately, he gets even more this time around. At least, he now got the girl for his trouble haha. Abby was a traumatized girl who's grown into a confident woman and I loved that change in her. She definitely needs to learn some self-control, but it makes for some interesting scenes!  I really loved the two of them together, their chemistry and their fights.

The plot was action-packed and I was totally hooked even though the intrigue was very predictable. I wished Rachel didn't remind us every other page that Abby was hiding something because I figured it all out pretty quickly. It did not hamper my enjoyment of the novel so no harm done.

The conclusion was a killer though! I DID NOT expect that! I had a  couple of possible scenarios in mind, and it wasn't one of them! I would've paid good money to see the face of all those stuck-up alphas at the end and I can't wait to see how the series will evolve from there.

Rachel Vincent is self-publishing this series because no publisher wished to purchase the rights because it had been too long since the last Shifters book. Because of that, the very existence of future books depends on the sale of Lion's Share so I URGE you to purchase this amazing novel and encourage her. I really really hope there will be more novel in the series and I wonder which couple will be next!

Hunt by Rachel Vincent

I am a huge fan of the Shifters series by Rachel Vincent, and I was super sad when she announced, a couple of years ago, that Alpha was the last book. Hunt was released as part of the Chicks Kick Butt anthology and even though I bought the book I hadn't come around to read it yet. In October, Rachel announced that she's trying her hand at self publishing!!! She decided to start a spin-off series of the Shifters world, starting with a story about Jace and Abby. To do so, she decided to revamp the original Hunt story a bit, and release it on Amazon. Now that you have the back story... here's my review!

Abby was a fragile little thing in Shifters, due to a big trauma and it was nice to see her stand up for herself in this novella. The story takes place a couple of years later and Abby live on Jace's territory. He is now Alpha of his own area. We don't see much of Jace in this story, but I love this man to death so I'm super thrilled of this new development.

The story arc is really short with only 49 pages but I still had this thrill I loved so much when reading past Shifters books, so I'm sure fans won't be disappointed.

The end is promising a tumultuous relationship between the two protagonists and I can't wait for the first book of the new series, Lion's Share, to release! Rachel talking was about a late December 2014 release and as of now (I'm writing this on December 23rd) there's still no updates.

I don't know how necessary it would be to read the Shifters' books to understand this new series, but really, you SHOULD read the Shifters series anyway, because it's just so damn good. One of my favorite in fact!

Shadow Bound by Rachel Vincent

Shadow Bound (Unbound, #2)Shadow bound by Rachel Vincent

Purchase: Amazon | Book Depository

Kori Daniels is a shadow-walker, able to travel instantly from one shadow to another. After weeks of confinement for betraying her boss, she's ready to break free of the Tower syndicate for good. But Jake Tower has one final job for Kori, one chance to secure freedom for herself and her sister, Kenley, even if it means taking it from someone else....

The job? Recruit Ian Holt-or kill him.

Ian's ability to manipulate the dark has drawn interest from every syndicate in the world, most notably an invitation from Jake Tower. Though he has no interest in organized crime, Ian accepts the invite, because he's on a mission of his own. Ian has come to kill Tower's top Binder: Kori's little sister.

Amid the tangle of lies, an unexpected thread of truth connecting Ian and Kori comes to light. But with opposing goals, they'll have to choose between love and liberty....

Cam and Liv were successful in their mission, but it wasn’t without consequences. Poor Kori was  tricked into helping them and her boss had her pay the high price, locking her up and torturing her for weeks. An opportunity for freedom presents itself in the form of a sexy man with particular talents, but he has his own agenda. Kori and Ian will have to face-off on a battleground made of oaths, treason and blood. Which one of them will make it out alive?

I’ll start by saying that Rachel Vincent is simply genius and oh-so-amazing and also, how good looking is that cover? The Unbound series is just too amazing for words and I’m glad I didn’t have time to read the second instalment until now because the next book is just a couple of weeks from releasing hehe. I LOVED Blood Bound (you can read me praising here) and I’m often scared of second books because they so often don’t live up to the first book, but it wasn’t the case here. Shadow Bound was Awesome – yes with a capital A.

The Unbound series is like nothing you’ve read before and a bit of backstory is needed here. Vincent’s characters live in a world where some people are born Skilled. Some can track people by their name or their blood (both of which hold great power), some can read the truth from your words, some (like Kori) can walk into a shadow to get out of another one miles away, others (like Kori’s little sister) can bind you to hold a promise and if you fail to do so, you will suffer terrible pain – until death. More talents are out there, but you get the picture.

Where there’s power, there’s corruption. The city is split in two main territory, each led by a mafia-like boss with many skilled people bound to them. Kori is bound to one of them, Tower, and she must recruit Ian or die suffering upon failure.

I love, I mean LOVE, this world Vincent created because it’s so original and the atmosphere is so dark, yet there’s a little tiny bit of hope and the characters hang on to it for dear life. I like how each character have to play the loopholes to try and maintain some semblance of freedom and how strong they need to appear even though they each have a fragility. The relationship between Kori and Ian was so engrossing and somewhat twisted because of the taint Tower put on them from the start, ordering Kori to do whatever he asked for – even sex.

Kori is a very colorful character, to say the least. We met her in Blood Bound and her bold language really set her appart. Here’s a quote from Shadow Bound for demonstration :)

I’m pretty good with knives. I’m so good, in fact, that I could sever your testicles with one hand and slice open your throat with the other, and you’d go into shock so fast you’d die without ever knowing you’d spilled a fucking drop of blood.

Many thought she didn’t come off as very likeable, even though she cracked me up, but getting to know her in SB changes that. She is strong and very loyal to her sister, on top of being very funny. I really liked her. Ian was also amazing and I like how mesmerized by Kori he was and how he didn’t push her and respected her. I really gentleman even though he came to Tower to kill her sister.

I think the best part from this series, is how complex and intricate the plot is. It’s hard to figure out the truth in this thick tangle of lies and with everyone keeping their own secret agenda, it’s impossible to see clearly. All you can do is dive in with the characters and go with the flow. The end of Shadow Bound reveal stuff you never expected, hitting you like a truck, and even after I’ve finished reading it for two days now, I’m still trying to put all the details together. I have the strong urge to go back and read the book again now that I have all the unveiled information, that’s just how good it was.

Even though Shadow Bound is a long book (almost 450 pages), Rachel Vincent’s amazing writing kept me right on track. The build-up to action might seem a little slow to some, but it didn’t bother me at all, as I rejoiced every word she penned.

The Unbound series is a MUST READ. Urban Fantasy fan or not, you must get out there and get your hands on those books, like… yesterday! I really can’t wait for those novels to be translated in French so I can have my mom and brother-in-law to read them. Action-packed, full of twist and turns, this heart-pounding series has an amazing story wrapped in a mafia-like atmosphere, topped with a bloody bow. I loved every pages and I’m sure you will too!

Rachel Vincent's Before I Wake blog tour + giveaway!

Rachel Vincent Before I Wake Blog Tour

I have exciting news for you all. We're today's stop on Rachel Vincent's Before I Wake blog tour! Rachel's been on my auto-buy list since I first picked up STRAY. Her books are full of richly developed characters and plots that will keep you guessing and send your emotions all over the map because she's not afraid to take chances with her stories, which I respect and adore. You know you're in for a thrilling read when you pick up one of her books!

This month, Rachel's on tour to celebrate the release of her sixth (and penultimate) Soul Screamers novel, BEFORE I WAKE, which comes out tomorrow (June 26). Soul Screamers is her YA series about Kaylee Cavanagh, a teenager who discovers she's a bean sidhe in the first book in the series, MY SOUL TO TAKE. Since then, she's been in one dire situation after another, as you'll guess from this guest post if you're not familiar with the series. =)

As part of the Before I Wake Blog Tour tour, there are two giveaways. You could win the daily prize -- a copy of BEFORE I WAKE -- or the grand prize -- a pink iPod nano with "Soul Screamers" engraved on it! But don't just skip down to the giveaway because Rachel has written a really fun guest post and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. Get ready for a tour to Eastlake High School, where Kaylee goes to school, with Chelsea Simms as our tour guide.

---------------------------------

So, you’re new? Lucky you.

First of all, welcome to Eastlake High School. I’m Chelsea Simms, and as one of the terms allowing me back on campus, I’ve been assigned as the official tour guide for all the new kids. For the rest of the school year.

What was that? Oh. Because I…well, I got caught using recreational chemicals on school grounds. First offense. No big deal. This tour guide gig kinda blows, but it’s better than suspension, and if I work it right, I think I can claim it as a community service bullet on my college applications. You know—really put a positive spin on it.

Just so we’re clear, I’m also editor of the school paper and a senior member of the yearbook staff. I’m not one of those stoners who can’t remember her own name, so any weird shit you hear on this tour is the God’s honest, not the delusions of a loser pothead. Got it?

Good.

Okay, the first thing they want you to know about Eastlake is that our dance team took the regional title this year and placed eighth in the country. Also, our mathletes took home the bronze Pi. Yes, I’m serious. And it’s not the kind of pie you can eat.

But what you actually need to know first is that we were recently named the most dangerous high school of our size in the country. Yes, in the whole country.

Huh? Oh, about twelve hundred students. But that’s several fewer than we started the year with.

Yeah, I’m totally serious. We’ve lost seven so far, I think. And that’s not including the teachers. Broke the state record for teen deaths in one school, not caused by a natural disaster. We’re kinda infamous.

Nope, no disease. No gang violence. No car crashes either. Different things. Weird things. Well, really, most of them just kinda dropped dead, out of the blue. My mom thinks God got tired of “suffering fools,” but she would never say that to anyone else. Other than me. Wouldn’t be polite.

Okay. Moving on. You’ve seen the attendance office. This is the vice principal's office. If you get busted for something, this is where your parents will pick you up. Or the cops. The VP has them on speed dial. 911’s not fast enough for him anymore.

That’s the nurse’s office over there. She stays busy. In fact, I heard they increased her budget by thirty percent this year. Since January.

On your left is the math hall, and on your right are the science labs. We lost a math teacher a few weeks ago, in that classroom right there. On the left. He just dropped dead at his desk. Custodian found him the next morning. They didn’t even cancel classes that time, cause we’d run out of unused snow days.

His replacement died too. That was creepy. You probably read about it in the paper, right? It involved a female student and a sharp, pointy object, but that’s all I’m going to say about that…

Upstairs you’ll find English, foreign languages, and all of the government, history, and social studies—

What? On the ceiling…? Oh, yeah, that’s just soot. We had a little fire in one of the chem labs earlier this semester. Someone torched a science fair project. Yeah, on purpose. They haven’t gotten around to replacing all the ceiling tiles yet.

If you take a left at the end of the hall, you’ll be in the electives wing. Art, band, orchestra, theater, plus all the vo-tech stuff, at the very end. And journalism. Nothing weird ever happens down there. My mom thinks there’s something out there protecting students that “stay involved.” Like there’s some patron saint of the arts standing between us and…well, death.

The jocks didn’t get a patron saint.

Through those double doors, that’s the gym. A senior girl died in there in the middle of a memorial service a few months ago. It was really bad timing.

Also, this year’s Snow Queen had a total mental breakdown in the gym girls’ room, when her best friend cut her hair off at the scalp. We’ve got the only half-bald beauty queen in the county. She tried to talk the rest of the queen’s court into shearing themselves in solidarity, but they kind of…laughed in her face.

Through here is the cafeteria. Upper classmen eat out in the quad when it’s not pouring. A girl died out there too, back in September. Just fell out on the grass. It was weird. She was the first one to go.

Huh? No, I didn’t know her. I mean, I knew who she was, but we weren’t friends or anything.

Past the quad and to the right is the parking lot. You can’t park there until the office issues you a tag. And assigns you a spot. You’ll be at the back, since it’s the end of the year and all the good spots are taken.

Oh, wait, I forgot. A space near the front just opened up—our third baseman died in his car a couple of weeks ago. He was a senior, so he had a good spot. No, I don’t know what happened to him. Lots of people here die for no reason. They just…die. But my point is that if they haven’t given his spot away yet, you might get it.

What? Yeah, I guess it’s a little creepy to inherit a dead guy’s parking spot. But if you’re scared to walk in the footsteps of a dead guy, you probably also want to avoid the dance team. And the football team. And the baseball team.

Huh. I never really thought about it, but there’s kind of a high mortality rate for athletics at Eastlake. Maybe you should think about working for the newspaper. Journalists tend to live longer around here. Can you write? Or take pictures?

Oh, wait, what we really need is someone to work on a couple of memorial page layouts. ASAP. We’ve already had to stop the presses on the yearbook to get them included. I could hook you up on that, if you’re not creeped out by looking at pictures of dead people. Before they died, of course.

Interested? No?

Okay then. That’s pretty much everything. But let me just leave you with a little bit of advice, survivor to new kid: Keep your head down. Other than that, there’s only one thing you can do to tip the odds in your favor at Eastlake, and for once, my mom and I agree. Ready?

Pray.

Daring You to Read… Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent

Daring you to read

In order to follow my own six months rule, I’ve been anxiously awaiting to dare you to read my favorite read of 2011, Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent!

I’m a huge fan of Rachel’s adult books and was extremely sad when her Shifters series came to an end, but I was in for quite a treat when I picked up Blood Bound, the first novel in her Unbound trilogy.

I find it really hard to explain the world Vincent created because it’s so intricate but I’ll do my best!

Imagine a world in which the promises you make become unbreakable oaths. Liv lives in such a world because some people were born Skilled and within those wide range of talents, one of the powers is Binding. Binders can work their magic with words, blood or skin but once a promise is sealed you have to keep it, or die resisting the compulsion. Literally. Liv learnt the consequences the hard way because when she was a teen, she promised, with three of her friends, to always be there for each other. Little did they know, the baby sister sealing the promise was one of the most powerful Binders she’s ever known. This promise will change her entire world when her friend Anne asks her (see forces her through the oath) to find her husband’s murderer and kill him. Olivia is one of the most powerful blood tracker (she can find people using the magic force of their blood) and paired with her star-crossed ex boyfriend Cam (a name tracker), she will discover a lot more trouble than they bargained for.

To put it simply, Blood Bound is sheer genius. The whole concept of Skilled people reminds me a bit of the movie Push, but taken to a whole new level and so much better. An element I didn’t mention in my description is how power often ends up in the hands of criminals. In Blood Bound, the city is split between east and west territories and each side has its own mafia-like boss. Each with unknown numbers of Skilled (or not) goons, magically contracted (see bound by a tattoo) to obedience and secrecy to their leader. Those “employees” are forced to execute every order and are physically unable to betray their respective leaders, or their secrets. The whole set-up comes together to create an extremely suspenseful and gripping world.

Reading this book left me completely breathless and I kept thinking about it weeks after I was done reading it, considering all the what-ifs the story brought me. I suggested it to everyone who would listen to me and it’s now your turn to hear my song lol

Let me make this clear: You Must Read Blood Bound. MUST.

The second book in the series, Shadow Bound, is scheduled for May 22nd, 2012 and I can’t wait to read it. I preordered it as soon as it was possible to!

A Christmas With… Rachel Vincent

Xmas2_thumb1_thumb

Rachel Vincent released the first book in her brand new adult series, Blood Bound, back in August and since it was my favorite read of 2011, I had to invite Rachel to the event! I will let you guess how excited I was when she accepted *g*

---------------------

1- Blood Bound is the first book in your new series, how hard was it to create a whole new world that's so different from everything out there?

Very, very difficult. And I've already heard that it's "too similar" to another book I've never read, so really, it feels impossible to create something totally new. The best we can do as writers is to write everything from our own perspective and try to bring some new slant even to old ideas.

2- Blood Bound has been my favorite read in 2011, what's been the fan response like?

For the most part, people really seem to like it. One blog reviewer said that she liked it, but didn't plan to continue because she can't imagine the world not getting darker with each book. And I think that's a valid point. These aren't light, fluffy stories. These are stories about people who have to make horrible choices and tragic sacrifices. That's never easy, and a world that forces those kinds of decisions will never be full of rainbows and sunshine. ;) But yes, I've been thrilled with the critical reception so far.

3- Shadow Bound, the second book in the series, features Kori & Ian, will we see more of Liv & Cam? I really liked them and feel like there's more to their story!

Yes, Liv and Cam will both be in the book a little bit. But they'll be on the other side of the great divide this time. ;)

4- How many books are planned in the series? I was sad to say my good byes to the Shifters series last year, but I'm happy to have a new amazing adult series to sink my teeth into!

Three. This will be a trilogy, unless something changes drastically.

Now onto some Christmas-y questions:

5- What's your favorite Christmas movie?

"It's A Wonderful Life." That may be a cliched answer, but it's true. I'm fascinated with the concept. I'd love to do something with that "what if I'd never been born" concept some day.

6- What's a typical Christmas like in the Vincent family?

Lots of baking. A real tree. Traditionally colored wrapping paper and white lights outside. I like a traditional Christmas. So it's kind of unfortunate that I live in San Antonio, where it was 70 degrees on Christmas day last year. ;)

7- How is it different from when you were a kid?

Now I'm an adult and I buy presents. And I pick the menu. And bake the pies.

8- Is there any Christmas wishes you'd like to share with our readers?

I hope everyone gets at least one new book for Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) this year. You can never go wrong with reading. ;)

Rachel Vincent is the author of the Shifters series about a werecat named Faythe Sanders, who is learning to define her own role in her family and fighting to claim a place in her Pride. Her new adult series, Unbound, will debut September 1, 2011 in the US, Canada, and the UK with Blood Bound.

Rachel’s young adult urban fantasy series, Soul Screamers, is about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee) trying to balance a normal high school experience with the terrifying, hidden world she’s just discovered. My Soul To Take, My Soul To Save, My Soul To Keep, and My Soul To Steal are available now. Look for book five, If I Die on October 1, 2011 in the US and Canada.

A resident of San Antonio, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her office with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks—seriously—and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.
