PSB: Interview & Giveaway with Caitlin Kittredge

PSB2

headshot

I am very happy that Caitlin could free a little time for us in her schedule to answer a couple of questions =) You probably know her for her Black London series & Nocturne City series, but today she’s here to celebrate her young adult debut, The Iron Thorn (Feb 22nd, 2011)! Make sure you tag along, because she is also offering a copy of her book ^^ Please welcome her warmly =)

How would you describe The Iron Thorn, in 3 sentences or less?

A Lovecraftian steampunk fantasy about stolen brothers, haunted mansions and the girl who gets caught in the middle.

If you were a character in your own book, which one would you be and why?

None!  I'm happy not to have to deal with evil fairies and steampunk gadgets.

Would you tell us why we should read The Iron Thorn, tweeter style (140 characters or less)?

If you like your fairies evil, your bad boys bad and your technology with gears, then Aoife's story is the one for you!

What's the hardest part in starting a new series?

Definitely fitting the worldbuilding into the story--once the rules are established, it's easier to dive right into the plot, but in the first book, there's always a bit of "origin story" to get in there, so your readers can immerse themselves in the world.

About the Black London series, did you always plan to write four books, or did it grow?

There's actually going to be at least five!  I don't have a definite end to the series planned.

Heard you like photography, a form of art I ADORE, would you like to show us some of your shots?

Sure!  You can go to my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/caitlinkittredge.  You can click on my "Portraits" or "Abandoned Places" sets to see some of my favorites!

I've heard you collect bad habits lol, which one is the weirdest and which one would you like to get rid of?

My worst habit is procrastination, for sure.  I'm probably never going to get rid of that one!  I don't have any weird habits, really...just standard bad ones like biting my nails!

What project are you currently working on?

Right now I'm editing Volume II of the Iron Codex series, and working on a proposal for a new adult urban fantasy series that I'm describing as Raymond Chandler meets Supernatural, with bonus! fallen angels.

And last, What's your best Spring Break memory?

Confession time: I was homeschooled, and never actually went away for spring break.  I actually have a vivid memory of being the only person in our local park one afternoon, because all of my peers were off skiing or winning wet tshirt contests.  During college, I usually either slept (I worked graveyard shift and was sleep deprived all through my freshman year) or went to visit my boyfriend.  Maybe I win a prize for Most Boring Spring Break Story ever?  The trophy could be feet wearing sandals with thick socks...

---------------------------

Thank you so much Caitlin for taking the time to share with us! If we were the same age, and grew up in the same area, we would’ve been two in that park hehe, I never did anything on spring break either.

In the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft’s epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical—born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.

Aoife Grayson’s family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different.

If you got curious I’ve got a treat for you! On Feb 15th, Caitlin posted on her blog the beginning of the first chapter. I though you might be interested ^^

“THERE ARE SEVENTEEN madhouses in the city of Lovecraft. I’ve visited all of them.

My mother likes to tell me about her dreams when I visit. She sits in the window of the Cristobel Charitable Asylum and strokes the iron bars covering the glass like they are the strings of a harp. “I went to the lily field last night,” she murmurs.
Her dreams are never dreams. They are always journeys, explorations, excavations of her mad mind, or, if her mood is bleak, ominous portents for me to heed.

The smooth brass gears of my chronometer churned past four- thirty and I put it back in my skirt pocket. Soon the asylum would close to visitors and I could go home. The dark came early in October. It’s not safe for a girl to be out walking on her own, in Hallows’ Eve weather.”

-from Chapter 1, The Ashes of the World

Thanks to Caitlin’s generosity, I have a finished copy of The Iron Thorn to offer to one lucky reader!

  24. I remember reading about this book somewhere at the end of 2009, and knowing it was going on my xmas 2010 list, then the release date was changed so now it's on my birthday 2011 list, along with Demon Bound and Bone Gods.

I got Street Magic and Nightlife for xmas 2010 instead of The Iron Thorn, but haven't got round to reading Nightlife yet.
I'm English, (from the north) and I think it's great that you managed to write English characters that didn't have me wincing every time they spoke. I think you pulling that off just made me want to read The Iron Thorn that much more.

I also love Black and White and Shades of Night, I'd love to read more about those characters.
