Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick

Honestly, this is not my usual kind of read, but sometimes I find it refreshing to read a book outside my comfort zone. I would categorize this book as a thriller but it's also a YA contemporary because of all the boy drama. Right after finishing the book, I have this weird love/hate feeling about BLACK ICE. I really did enjoy it because it was captivating and had me hooked until the very end. On the other hand, I didn't really connect with the main character because of so many bad decisions she made.

It all starts off as Britt and her best friend Korbie make their way to Korbie's family cabin in the mountains but never reach it because of very bad winter weather. Snow prevents them from continuing on in the Jeep so they decide to hike a little and find warm shelter. I think this is their first big mistake because they could have easily taken the new hiking gear they had just purchased and make camp to wait out the storm. Unfortunately the first thing they can think of is running off into the woods with no idea where they are in order to find help. And help they did not find. Instead they get kidnapped by two guys who want to use Britt to get off the mountain because of her apparent knowledge of the area. And I say apparent because throughout the whole novel, it felt like she had no clue where she was going.

The romantic tension that develops between Britt and one of her captors, Mason, is very annoying. She just came out of a relationship with a jerk called Calvin and it's almost as if she's trying to replace one bad boy for another. If there were one good example of Stockholm Syndrome, this would be it. I wanted to roll my eyes every time Mason said something remotely nice. The guy just kidnapped her, prevented her from getting help and just because he says something about getting her to safety she immediately believes him. Britt supposedly trained many month for this hiking trip of hers but it seems like she knows nothing about surviving in the woods. Well, she knows a few basics but relies a lot on Mason to do the work. She thinks she's a strong and independent person but she relies so much on Mason that it's impossible believe.

I think most of what I don't like about the book springs from my inability to connect with Britt. She thinks she knows a lot about hiking and survival but when it comes to applying her knowledge, everything seems to go wrong. So many bad decisions were made from her part and instead of proving herself to everyone (especially her ex, Calvin) she would have been better off going to Hawaii like some of her other friends. Not only do I not agree with the decisions she makes during this ordeal, I also think she made bad decisions in staying in a relationship with Calvin for as long as she did. Also, Korbie sounds like a girl that could have been cast in the movie Mean Girls because there's nothing remotely nice about this girl expect for giving Britt so many things, and then rubbing it in her face later on.

It might sound as if I didn't like BLACK ICE but while my main issue is with the characters, many other things about this book were done right. The pacing was perfect since things were revealed little by little, keeping the tension to the maximum throughout the whole story. The author also kept me guessing throughout the majority of the book, even though I guessed who the real "bad guy" was some time before things were revealed. I wonder if this book would have been better as a non YA book. Instead of writing about unrealistic teens, maybe the author might be better off writing about adults. I don't think I would recommend this book to anyone, but I honestly don't regret having read it. The suspense was good even if I was a little disappointed with the ending.

Crescendo Giveaway!

Yes baby that’s what I’m talking about lol

Because Crescendo is AWESOME (see review here), because you are awesome and because Big Honcho Media & Simon & Schuster are also awesome, I have a fabulous prize for you guys. But before I give you the details let’s talk about the books a bit!

Hush, Hush the first book in the series debuted as a New York Times bestseller and of course it was a blast (my review here)

HushHushCover A sacred oath, a fallen angel, a forbidden love.
Nora Grey has had a rough year. Her father was murdered and as a result, her mother had thrown herself into work, leaving Nora alone most of the time in their secluded farmhouse. Despite this, she manages to be a very good girl, never missing school, never even driving without permission.
But when the transfer student, Patch, gets assigned as her lab partner in biology, from the moment the two are together, there's an inescapable magnetism that draws Nora deeper and deeper into his dark world. When she discovers the enormous V-shaped scars on his back, she discovers that there is a battle going on between the fallen and the immortal. And she's the object.
The magnetism she feels is now more inescapable than ever.

And then came Crescendo (Available October 19), I was really lucky to get an early copy and I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the third book, I WANT IT NOW PLEASE!!! I’m sure it’s going to sky rocket the New York Times bestseller list as well, I already pre-ordered my finished copy!

CrescendoCover Nora should have know her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.
The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

And because I love trailers, here the official Crescendo trailer

Also feel free to visit the brand new website!

Now onto the giveaway!

A lucky reader will win a handmade gold angel wing and labradorite lariat and a finished copy of Crescendo!

(ARC) Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

CrescendoCover

Nora should have know her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

Oh My Goodness. And here I was thinking there was a limit to awesomeness and then Crescendo blew the standards through the roof. I had honestly no idea what to expect when I started reading the sequel to hush, hush but whatever you imagined, Crescendo is better. Emotions are running high the whole time. I threw my book away a few times refusing to believe what I just read and then ran after it to pick it right up because I couldn’t stop reading. I felt flushed, breathless and restless page after page. Everything is scarily intense and Becca Fitzpatrick doesn’t allow you a break.

Twists after turns after stunt, the plot takes you on an extreme emotion ride. I wanted to beat the crap out of Patch, shake and slap Nora to knock some sense into her. But in the end you’re just as confused as Nora is, because Becca won’t let you in on the secret! I have to admit I had my doubts about a certain character and even though I was right about him, there was a lot more to be revealed.

Nora is smart and resourceful the tricks she pulled made me raise an eyebrow. I found myself mentally yelling at her many times but every good and bad decision she took were necessary. I’m not gonna tell you how I feel about Patch because I don’t want to give anything away, but he will surprise you in many ways. You will also be introduced to new- and very interesting- characters. Some you’ll love, some you’ll hate but like every characters, none will leave you indifferent.

There are also a few moments I was laughing out loud, and here’s a spoiler-free quote I particularly liked:

I held out my hot dog, which had grown cold. “Do you want this?”

“No way. You’re going to need it. If anything bad happens, just take a bite. Ten seconds later, you’ll feel all warm and  and happy inside.”

Imma let you guess who said that!

The end was beyond exciting and intense and really what kind of end is that Becca? How are we suppose to wait until the next book? The suspense is killing me! If what I already told you isn’t enough to convince you of how good this book is then maybe this will. One of the first thing I thought after finishing the book was: “I want to read it again!”. Because it’s awesome indeed, but also because I wanna be sure I didn’t miss any details!

Guest Post + Contest with Becca Fitzpatrick

    Allo my darlings!

I am SUPER excited to kick-start the Paranormal Summer Fest with a Fabulous author, Becca Fitzpatrick (!!!), I approached her months ago with a rather ballsy request and she jumped right in on my crazy wagon lol, she’s been so great! So without further babbling, I’m leaving you to Becca’s hands!

    -----------------------------

    Hey, everyone!

I'm excited to be here on Tynga's Reviews today, chatting a little about *drumroll* my favoriteBeccaFitzpatrick2 ingredients in paranormal romantic suspense!  What is it about paranormal romantic suspense that makes me a big fan of the genre?  Well to begin with, it satisfies me on so many different levels.  I'm an avid reader of romances, mysteries, horror and fantasy, but there's only one genre that blurs the lines by bringing all of these elements together in one story.  Paranormal romantic suspense has:

The broiling sexual tension of a romance novel

The complex riddle of a mystery

The psychological and physiological terror of horror

    The supernatural of fantasy

Just like with any recipe, it takes a careful medley of ingredients before you can say, voilà!  Today I want to share with you my favorite five ingredients, as a reader, for heart-pounding, hair-raising paranormal romantic suspense.  Without further ado...

    Chemistry

Almost every paranormal romantic suspense novel takes place over a few days—a few weeks at most—because the stakes are high and lives are in danger.  A girl is being stalked.  A child has been kidnapped.  One of the teachers in the local high school is murdering students.  This level of danger and tension can't be dragged out over the space of several years.  The danger is happening right now, and our heroine and hero need to figure out a way to stop it soon, or all will be lost.  In real life, most people don't fall in love in, say, ten days.  But readers of paranormal romantic suspense expect the hero and heroine to fall in love.  It's one of the key reasons why I pick up the book.  And for the author who doesn't deliver...beware ;).

So how does an author go about taking two people, throwing them into the frying pan, and making sure they fall in love stat?  Answer: Chemistry.  Instant, electric, scintillating chemistry.  The first time the hero and heroine see each other, the earth should shift.  Sparks should fly.  Time may even stop.  The protagonists should have a strong, immediate reaction to each other...even if it's hate.

That's right.  Hate cimage_sorties_idan make for great chemistry.  Think of how many books you've read, or even movies you've seen, where the hero and heroine clash big time during that first meet-up.  A few weeks ago I watched Far and Away with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.  There was everything from resentment to full-on disgust flying between them at first sight, and yet their chemistry was on fire.  Their reaction to each other was momentous, and therefore their chemistry was so hot, I found myself clapping and squealing in spite of myself.

The Right Villain (Who's so Twisted it's Wrong)

I don't know about you, but one of the reasons I read paranormal romantic suspense is for the villain.  In great romantic suspense the villain is often more clever, more seductive and more experienced than the heroine and hero.  He's ruthless and charming, and he knows what he wants.  He sounds a bit like a hero in his own right, doesn't he?

So what makes him the bad guy?

This: The very thing he wants is in direct conflict with what the heroine and hero want.  If the villain wants to cover up a crime to protect his mother, the heroine and hero need to be hotly pursuing the case.  If the villain robs a bank to pay off his gambling debt, and takes someone hostage in the process, the heroine should be the hostage negotiator.  If the villain needs a certain a treasure map to become gloriously wealthy, the heroine needs the treasure map to ransom her sister.  The villain isn't necessary evil to the core; he's just someone whose deepest desires pit him against the protagonists—and put them in increasing danger.  And while I know the villain will ultimately fail, I want a villain so strong and determined, that I begin to doubt the protagonists' success.  I want to begin to wonder if this might be the time when the villain actually does come out triumphant.

One final word on villains.  In paranormal romantic suspense with a strong mystery thread, I enjoy trying to figure out who the villain is, and why he acts the way he does.  Is he motivated by fear?  Revenge?  Ambition?  Jealousy?  Was he hired to kill?  Is he trying to cover another crime?  And just who the heck is he?  The butcher?  The baker?  The candlestick maker?

    Atmosphere

Paranormal romantic suspense wouldn't be around today if it weren't for Gothic fiction, the setting of which was often crumbling and decaying castles, or mansions with convoluted corridors, towers and secret passageways.  These settings instantly create a mysterious and even terrifying atmosphere and today's paranormal romantic suspense novels have adopted these same hair-raising settings to instill psychological and physiological anxiety.  An abandoned cabin in the middle of a snowstorm.  A dreary, rainy town whose residents keep to themselves and don't welcome newcomers.  A drafty farmhouse with a ghost rumored to haunt the attic.  A church with an ancient curse.  A graveyard.  You get the picture.

A Dark Place Classic 31000 Images

I love that paranormal romantic suspense squeezes every last ounce of possibility from its settings.  Ever notice how the romantic suspense climax rarely takes place on a sunshiny afternoon in the park, where children are sailing boats on the pond and birds are chirping?  Why?  Because a sunshiny afternoon in the park isn't dangerous.  It's not terrifying.  It doesn't make me as a reader grip the book in my hands, torn between the need to turn the page...and the fear of what I'll find if I do.  Romantic suspense stories come to a climax in just about the worst possible places you can imagine—abandoned docks, deep dark caves in the middle of Yellowstone, and even mausoleums...riddled with open caskets.

    Something Wicked This Way Comes

It wouldn't be paranormal romantic suspense without, well, something paranormal.  Vampires, witches, fallen angels and ghosts, yes.  But also time-travel, extrasensory perception, telepathy, X-ray vision, flying humans, arm-regeneration...oh the fun I could have with this list!

Suffice it to say, when I crack open a paranormal romantic suspense, I want to know something out of this world is in fact happening in this world.

    Happily Ever After

everafter Finally, when I pick up a paranormal romantic suspense, I don't care how many twists and turns I'm taken on, when all is said and done, I want the heroine and hero to be together.  I want them committed to each other.  I want to feel that all is right in the world, and good does triumph over evil.

Speaking of evil, I want the villain to pay for his crimes.  Other types of fiction can get away with the zinger ending (I'm thinking of Silence of the Lambs) where the villain lives at large, waiting to strike again.  As a romantic suspense reader, I won't tolerate it.  Furthermore, if the villain's crimes are especially heinous, I won't be satisfied with anything short of his heart stopping beating.  Cue music: Kill the beast!  Kill the beast!  Working together, I want to see the hero and heroine do in the villain.

There you have it.  My favorite ingredients in keep-you-up-all-night paranormal romantic suspense.  What about you?  What do you love about paranormal romantic suspense?

And what are some favorite paranormal romantic suspense titles you've read lately?
