PSB- Interview + Giveaway with Casey Daniels

PSB2

Casey Daniels, author of the Pepper Martin Mysteries series, very nicely made some room in her busy schedule to be with us today! Make sure you keep your eyes open for a her next release, A Hard Day’s Fright, on April 5th and please welcome her warmly!

Your series is about a PI who can see ghosts, it is hard to keep a balance between the Paranormal and the Mystery elements?

Don of the Dead (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 1)You know, it actually isn't hard to keep a balance between the paranormal and the mystery because they're so intertwined.  Everything that happens to Pepper (well, not including her love life, but sometimes that line gets blurred, too!), happens to her because of her Gift.  She wouldn't be a detective if it wasn't for the ghosts.

What can we expect in A Hard day's Fright?

In A Hard Day's Fright, Pepper is investigating thanks to a ghost who attended a Beatles concert in Cleveland in 1966--and was never seen again.  Not something Pepper is especially thrilled about doing, but then, she's never really too excited about an investigation. However, Pepper finds out that this ghost has a connection to someone close to her--someone who's still hurting from the girl's disappearance--and after that, soft-hearted The Chick and the Dead (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 2)Pepper is hooked.  One of the things I wanted to explore in this book is what happens to the survivors after something like a disappearance so Pepper's going to meet with the other kids (now adults, of course) who were with Lucy the night she disappeared.  And remember, Pepper also has some unfinished business with Quinn, her on-again, off-again boyfriend.  There are some big surprises where he's concerned!

I read your father is a detective, are you using what you've learned from him to write your books?

You know, my initial response was to say that no, I wasn't using anything I learned from Dad.  But the more I think about it . . . yeah, I guess I am.  He was logical and methodical.  Of course, Pepper isn't, but her investigations have to be, no matter what it takes to get her there.  He also had an eye for detail and Tombs of Endearment (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 3)that's certainly something Pepper's good at.  He was also great at talking to people.  I can't tell you how many times we went out and no matter where it was, a county fair or a movie or an amusement park, there he'd be, over in some corner talking to some shady looking character.  He knew everybody, and everyone respected him.  I guess that's something Pepper is learning, too.  That she has to depend on other people if she's going to get the information she needs.  Of course, she has a perfectly Pepper way of doing that.  Dad would definitely not approve!

Other than the love of cemetery, what else do you have in common with Pepper?

Well, I can't say Pepper has a love of cemeteries.  In fact, I have a feeling she'd rather be anywhere but!  In A Hard Day's Fright, she's going to get her chance.  As to what else we have in common . . . well, we're both curious.  And I'd like to think we're both smart.  I do not, however, have Pepper's fashion sense.

Is there a particular grave mark that ever stood out for you, from allNight of the Loving Dead (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 4) your cemetery roaming?

Oh yes, I have some favorites.  In fact, I have a picture of my very favorite hanging in my living room!  It's a tombstone from the early 1800s and carved onto it is a picture of the woman buried there, Elizabeth Jenkins.  It's a rough, very folksy carving, and all the more charming because of it.

If you could be any kind of supernatural being, what would you like to be?

Too funny, because someone else just asked me this question recently.  I said I guess I'd like to be a ghost...and I figure that one of these days, I'll get the chance!

What project are you currently working on?

Dead Man Talking (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 5)I just finished writing Pepper Martin mystery #8 in which Pepper takes a trip to New Mexico because an old friend has been kidnapped and she's got to deliver the ransom--the bones of a long-dead Native American.  That book was fun to write because I have a friend who lives in New Mexico and I've visited a couple times.  No title on it yet, going back and forth with the publisher on what we want that to be. It's the first time I've been stumped on a Pepper title.  In addition, I've got a new mystery series starting this fall.  It's called the Button Box Mysteries and my name on the cover is Kylie Logan.  The first book is "Button Holed."  It's a series about a woman named Josie Giancola who is an antique button dealer.  Don't think buttons are interesting?  Take a look at some old ones.  They are little bits of history and many of them are incredible works of art.  I've had great fun researching information about antique buttons.  My next project is to write the second book in that series.Tomb with a View (Pepper Martin Mysteries, No. 6)

Where do you picture yourself ten years from now?

10 years from now . . . well, I'd still like to be writing the Pepper books, that's for sure.  I have lots more ideas for adventures for her.  I have ideas for many other books, too, and I hope I have a chance to write every single one of them.

What's your best Spring Break memory?

Spring Break?  As in college?  Hmmm...there was that cemetery in New Orleans . . . the moonlit night . . . the voodoo ceremony . . .  But that's a story for another time!

What happened to a teenager named Lucy one night in 1966 after a Beatles concert? She rushed the stage, kissed Paul, started home with her friends, and was never seen again-until cemetery guide and unintentional PI to the dead Pepper Martin sees her as a ghost. Lucy's spirit can't rest in peace until her body is found and buried. But how will Pepper track down a missing corpse after forty-five years?

  10. I don't believe in what most people consider ghosts, but I do think that events and people can leave an aura or impression of emotion behind them.

This sounds like a series that just keeps getting more interesting as it goes. I would love a chance to start it by winning Don of the Dead.

  12. I think that there are lots of hoaxes out there, but some legitimate experiences- so if I have to say yay or nay on whether ghosts are real, I have to say yay. Although I don't want to be haunted. Maybe not even by a 'friendly' ghost- too terrifying. I wouldn't be overly optimistic that there are too many of those anyway. I figure ghosts stay here because of something unresolved, and so most are probably pretty pissed off.
If I won, I haven't started this series yet, so I would pick the first book (which I believe is Don of the Dead?)

  16. So nice to hear from so many readers! And isn't it interesting...about half the readers who've posted believe and the other half don't. I'd say that's pretty typical. As for the poster who mentioned the Ouiji board...count me out when it comes to that. Too, too creepy!

  48. I would need Tombs of Endearment, book #3 if lucky enough to win, since I can't find my copy and my husband now wants to read the series.

I think there may be something, whether they are called ghosts, spirits, angles, I'm not sure. I wish I could post a photo of one of our cats, taken shortly after the tough loss of 2 immediate family members within 10 weeks of each other. This cat was outside my grandmother's room, it was like he was searching for her (he certainly missed her), I took two photos of him and lets just say they do make one wonder.
