Guest Post & Giveaway with Michelle Rowen

Good Morning everyone!

I’m really happy to have Michelle Rowen with us today! She nicely accepted to let us pry in that head of hers a little, so without anymore babble from me, I’m gonna let her take control!

Team Demon or Team Vampire?

by Michelle Rowen

You can keep your werewolves.

I think the real battle is between demons and vampires. What’s the contest? Who makes the hottest paranormal romance hero, of course.

lestat Vampires have a running start in this game. They’ve been around seemingly forever, but in my opinion they’ve only really risen to the occasion of being heroic since Anne Rice’s Lestat made readers see that it’s possible for a bloodsucking monster to have a heart and, possibly, a soul. For him to want more than to find out where his next drink is coming from. For him to question whether or not killing humans is necessary to his survival.

Some might argue that in the last thirty years vampires have slowly become defanged. Take Twilight for example. For a movie about vampires, there’s not very much blood drinking going on. More sparkling and angsting.

Time for something a little different, I’d say. Vampires used to be scary, used to be the ultimate bad boy. Is he going to bite your neck or...just neck with you? Vampires used to equal danger, no question about it. Now, it’s a bit different.

Enter the demon. While I see a vampire as a self-hating, solitary dude who feels bad for stuff he’s done in the past and may, possibly, find his redemption in the love of a good woman, a demon isn’t quite that wishy-washy. A demon is the epitome of evil, right? He’s more like a guy who works for an evil company and he doesn’t have a choice in what he does. People look at him and see bad news,2215078619_1 no question about it. You expect a demon to be evil and dangerous and a monster...from hell. Not a good place for vacationing. Transylvania’s even a bit more scenic than that.

This, to me, is intriguing. What would make a demon like this change his ways? Change what he really is deep down inside. Change what he’s known for whatever eternity he’s already lived. A vampire is a previous human who was turned into a monster, but a demon can be a so-called monster from day one.

Of course, when we’re talking about romance, both vampires and demons will be changed, no matter what has happened in their past, by the love of the perfect -- or, more interestingly -- non-perfect woman. She’s the catalyst that shakes up their world view and how they see themselves.

I’ve written humorous vampire heroes (although still rather angsty), and in 2011 I’ll be writing much darker vampires (with less angst, more bite). I heart vampires.

But I also heart demons. Or, I heart one demon in particular at the moment. His name’s Darrak and he’s the hero of my new Living in Eden series, starting with THE DEMON IN ME, which just came out at the beginning of May. He was created from hellfire hundreds of years ago by Lucifer himself. Darrak doesn’t bother with angst so much, or at least he didn’t in the past. Lately, though, he’s been having a difficult time after being cursed by a witch. She destroyed his original body and he’s needed to possess humans ever since the Salem witch trials. After all that time’s gone by, he’s now forced to possess my heroine Eden’s body and he can use her psychic energy to help him take solid form during the day.

Darrak’s sexy, he’s mischievous, he’s demonic. And he’s the most fun paranormal romance hero I’ve written to date.

So.....am I Team Demon or Team Vampire? Depends on what I’m writing, personally. Can’t I have both??

Let me know which team you prefer and your favorite hero that represents that team and you’ll have a chance to win a signed copy of THE DEMON IN ME.

Happy reading!

  1. That's a bit tough but I would choose Team Vampire because I've always had an affinity for them and they introduced me to the paranormal world. My favorite vampire hero is Zsadist from JR Ward's BDB series.

  2. This is a hard one. I don't think I have read a book with a Demon. Bad, I know. They have random Demons but not a main character. I love the idea of it though. Very cool. :) So I guess I have to go with vampire. As for favorite vampires, I am totally into the Dark-Hunters series and The Midnight Breed series. Oh, no wait. Black Dagger Brotherhood!

So my favorite vampire would have to be Zsadist. HoT!!

  3. aw man, such a hard question.. I have to say that 90% of the time I am all for Vampires but if it is a really well written book I am all about those bad demons.. =)

  4. Wow. I've been Team Vampire for years and years, but when they are in competition with demons, I have to switch sides. Al, the sneaky, tricky, scary, humorous demon from The Hollows series by Kim Harrison is one of my favorite characters ever. :)

  5. I guess it would have to be team Vampire but I like demons also.
My favorite vampire hero - Would have to be J.R. Wards' Blackdagger Brotherhood.

  6. Demon? Vampire? I don't care, just give me a bad boy trying to be good that will thrill me! I love the bad boy that wants protect his lady and worship her. I will be happy. (oh and if he is hot too, thats a bonus.)

  7. I'd have to go with team vampire and my pick would be Eric from The True Blood series! tWarner419@aol.com

  8. I am team vampire. And my favorite so far is Eric from True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse books. I have really not read a demon book yet. Your book sounds wonderful. Love the cover.

  9. Even though I don't like to read many vampire stories anymore, I am still secretly on team vampire. :) I don't have a favourite vampire, and if I was to pick one, I would choose Asaleana. Who's she? Lol, she's one of my own characters.

  16. Although vampires have some really good qualities, if I'm going to have to choose then I am gonna have to go with demons. Perfect example?...JACOB from Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers series!

  17. I am usually a Team Vampire fan. As of this moment, I am a huge fan of Bones from the Night Huntress Series, but that could change depending on the next book I read.

  18. I definitely am a team vamp girl. Not that I don't like my demons, but given the choice...:)

I have to go with Spike from Buffy as my favorite vamp. :)

  19. I'm not into Vampires, so I guess I'll have to go with Demons. Can I choose werewolves?

  20. I'm going to have to go with Team Vampire at the moment - mainly because I haven't read a lot of books that focus on demons...maybe Michelle's new one can change my mind ;)

  21. I have yet to meet a demon hero that I like (though I'm still open to being convinced) so I'm going to choose TEAM VAMPIRE!

  22. I have to go with vampires. I've always loved the lore and somehow they don't seem evil, just bad. :)

  23. hi michelle! i'm team vampire, but then i've only read a couple of books with demons in them, so perhaps it's because i'm more familiar with vampires. maybe your new book will change my mind, or at least keep me on the fence about it! :)

  24. I love both demons and vampires :)

  25. I gotta go with Team Vampire on this one. One of my favorite heroes is Quinn from Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson series.

    Thanks for the quest post!

  26. I'm really looking forward to reading The Demon In Me, but even though Michelle's demon sounds pretty awesome, I still have to choose my favorite as the vampire.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I forgot to say which hero represents my Team Vampire. I guess I'd have to say Bones, from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series.

    ReplyDelete
  28. team vampire would be the side I come down and Bones from Jeannine Frost's grave series would be a great reason why.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I lean toward team vampire. But it may be unfair as I have not read many demon based books. Edward is a great vampire hero. Smooth, debonair, dramatic and oh so hot. Major Twilight love here :)

He is also an easy choice to remember because he stars in multiple books. While many series change characters book by book.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'll happily read anything with a good hero so I'd have a hard time choosing between vamps and demons. On the one hand, there are all the brothers from the BDB on Team Vamp, but on the other hand, there's Japh from Lilith Saintcrow's Dante Valentine series on Team Demon. Nope... can't choose.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like demons better, since vampires are so overused in popular literature lately. My favorite is Tierce Japhrimel from Lilith Saintcrow's Dante Valentine series.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh that is a hard question. I love Vampires but I also love the occasional Demon as well. I guess it depends on my moods. My fav. vamps at the moment are Eric from Sookie & Damon from Vampire Diaries my favorite demon would be any from Larrisa Ione's Demonica Series. I can't wait to read about Darrak I am sure he will become a favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Demons are definitely becoming more and more intriguing in this genre. The idea of a demon who actually possesses the body of the heroine sounds very cool. Thanks for peeking my interest!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Demons vs. Vampires..Darn, that's a tough one! I'd have to go with Vampires. The one that stands out the most currently is Dante from A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix. He is a very complex and "cool" character who elicits sympathy from the reader and at the same time, makes a girl want to just sit and stare! Hottie! Lol, thanks!

Have a great day every one!

  35. My favorite is the vampire Fitzroy from Tanya Huff's Blood series. Vicki is great as well. She is so not you typical hero (like me) yet she saves the day over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oooh, I'm first! Hi Michelle!

I think I'd be on team Demon because they're evil, the know it and they love it. I've gotten a bit tired of the typical brooding vamp. I want me some Demon!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm all for Team Vampire and my favorite team player is Jean Claude from the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Not much for demons. More an undead creature of the night sort of girl. There is something alluring about the blood drinking. I don't go for the romantic version that is big now but still think that the undead can have a sort of attract quality to bring humans in. This doesnt mean they are the most beautiful thing ever though.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am team werewolf, but it all depends (on a new character I read of, etc), sometimes it shifts over to vampire...heh. I don't think there are enough great werewolf characters, but I did like Alcide in Harris' series, until he got all...annoying.

  43. I think I'm Team Vampire, but I haven't really read much from the Team Demon camp... so maybe I should give them a shot too :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. You know I haven't read much about demons, but I think they would be fun!! So I don't really have a team - I also like vamps. Usually whoever I'm reading about at the time is my favorite hero!!

  45. Hmm... thats a tough one. Both vampires and demons can be sexy sometimes or bad (not the good kind of bad either). But I think I would choose the demon as the male lead in a romance novel. Vampires get enough leads and the demons need their chance to shine too. No offence Edward Cullen...I love you too. haha

  48. Hi there! I would probably say I was team vampire, although I think there's a lot more room to create demons who are original than vampires at this point. My favorite vampire would be Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Count St. Germain.
    Thanks for the terrific giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am definitely team vampire. My favorite would be Bill from the Sookie series - southern Vampires series? I forget. You know which one I talking about - don't you? LOL~! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  50. This is a really hard question, I tend to take each character and each story individually, so there really isn't a team I like better than the other. But if a book were to have both a vampire and a demon, I think I would like the one that is most devious, because a great hero/herione has to come across an extremely driven villian. So I guess I'm for both teams, or which ever on is in my current read. I don't have a favorite because I simply love the works of too many authors!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would have to be team vampire on this one. Edward from Twilight is pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was on Team Vampire all the way UNTIL I read Larrissa Ions Demon Series. Now, I am very split. At first I didn't think I'd like to read romance and demons but boy did her books prove to me that I shouldn't judge a book until I've tried it. Now I read genres all over the place including UF's & Fantasy which I really never gave a thought to. I can't wait to read yours which is in my TBR pile. You are an auto buy author for me. Is this part of a series and if so When will the next one be released? I like reading series books when I have 2 or more in a row. Have a Great day, Stephanie

  53. I used to be Team Vampire but if you are going Vampires vs Demons---I will take the Demons!

I think Cole is just a great example of everything a Demon can be :) What I like most though is the possibilities are almost endless where Demons are concerned :) That makes them yummy to read--because you never quite know what is going to happen :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would say both. For vampire, it would be JR Ward's Zsadist and for demon, it would be Larissa Ione's Wraith.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Love this post. I completely agree that vampires are being defanged. Sparkling Vampires? Really? So I can't wait to read about your darker vampires in 2011!

Adding The Demon in Me to my to-read pile.

  56. Well, I'm definitely Team Vampire and my favorites would be Edward (mmm) and Spike from Buffy-land.

  57. ohh a tuffy...hmm.
i'd have to say i'm team demon. while i've read a lot of vampire books, it's those few demon books between that have occupied my mind.

  58. I prefer both demons and vamps. They both have a dark appeal, but really sick of the vampire pity party, because they hate themselves. It gets kind of boring after a while.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm team vampire but my list of characters that explain is longgg. Here are a few: Bones, Eric Northman, Black Dagger Brotherhood, Jean Claude from Anita Blake

    ReplyDelete
  60. Team Demon! Lords of the Underworld is my only explanation!

  61. Oh Team Demon!
Demons are just so interesting to read and write about. You can make up all sorts of new myths as well as expanding on old ones.
I just find them so much more intriguing and fierce than vampires.

    ReplyDelete
  62. errr...Team Demon? I am not sure if the Lords of the Underworld count since they just kinda house the demons inside them...if not then I would switch sides.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Team Vampire for sure. Ward's Black dagger Brotherhood, is there any other?

  66. I have to go with demons. There is so much you can do with demon charactors, from what kind to how powerful. For example the elemental demons in Jacquenlyn Frank’s The Nightwalkers series, the supper hot sex demons in Larissa Ione’s Demonica series and the really powerful and dark demons in the Crimson City Series.

"Is this part of a series and if so When will the next one be released?"

Yes, THE DEMON IN ME is part of my "Living in Eden" series that will follow the same characters, much as my Immortality Bites series did. The second book, SOMETHING WICKED, is out this October. The third book, THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC, will be out about a year later. I haven't written that one yet. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Team Vampire. Right now (cause it changes depending on what I am reading ) Bones from J. Frost! Yum

    ReplyDelete
  69. Demon vs Vampire? Well... hard decision. I, myself, haven't read a book where a demon is a/the main character, so far, but I sure looove vampires! But when I think of vampires there's just one I really would like to meet: Bones from Jeaniene Frost's book series (hottest, sexiest but still most dangerous vamp ever!!!). So I guess I'm on the vamp team, as it says on the left: BONES IS MINE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I would be team demon. I like vampires to but after reading gena Showalter's LOTU I fell in love w/demons. Kresley Cole does a good demon king :) I'm glad you've introduced Michelle Rowen. I'm looking forward to reading about her demon =) Thanks for the contest. Tanya

  71. Team Vampire! All the way. Vampires are just my thing. They have an appeal demons never have. I need my sophisticated, blood sucking vampires. Our leader would be Marius, of course, from the Vampire Chronicles. Because he is amazing in every possible way.

  100. I'm wishy-washy - whoever is hottest! If I had to pick, I love Larissa Ione's Demonica demons, and just finished reading Michele Hauf's Angel Slayer with Ashur, so I guess I'm on Team Demon!

  101. Team Demon, because too many vampires have become too romantic lately. For me, vampires are mainly predators, they are not seducers.

    ReplyDelete
  102. That is a tough question. I would have to say Team Vampire, with a fair amount of love for Damon from The Vampire Diaries, but I would be interested in reading more novels involving demons so that I could perhaps move to Team Demon.

  108. Um...is vamdom an option! :P That is a really, really hard choice! I think that vampires have been around so long as the seductive, mysterious, dangerous phenomenon that they're who we look to most often to fulfill that paranormal 'romantic' idea of the who we would walk the 'dark side' with. And I guess you could include werewolves in that conversation as well.

But, demons are starting to make a huge plug in the paranormal 'yummy' scene! They're like the new kid at school that you want to watch, fantasize about, and possibly try on for awhile! LOL!

For me, I am starting to really, really enjoy demons on the scene. Especially with the different twists that each author brings to the characters!

I look forward to reading this book! It sounds great!

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Vampires have been a fav forever, but demons are awesome too - lol guess I am both! Dante in Joey Hill's Mermaid's Ransom is part demon/part vamp. Larissa Ione's Wraith in Pleasure Unchained is one of my fav mix demon/vamps!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Thats kind of hard. I love vampires because of all the different things you can learn from them in books but demons aren't exactly known. The books that I've read about demons makes them terrible and that makes me want to go with team vampire.

    ReplyDelete
  111. This is a difficult question because many books always talk about vampires and those about demons make them terrible creature. I would go with team vampire because I know more about them than demons.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Even thought most books I've read are vampires, I think I would rather Demons. They are made out as terrible creatures, which in some cases they are.. but as a love interest in a book, I've seen many demons that I LOVED. I depends on how the character is written and portrayed. I love vampires, but I would have to choose demons.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Team Vampire. I've been a vamp fan since I first started reading paranormal books :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Team Demon! They're sexier and more powerful than Vampires!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I would have to say team vampire. One of my favorites is Ryder from Caridad Pineiro's The Calling series.

  117. Well, I started as a "vampire girl" as my friends called me back in high school. So I guess I'm still a little more on the vampire side. I've read tons of other supernatural creatures books, the demons have always varied in their forms. Good-looking, not good-looking. Some that are really sexy!

So I guess I still go by Team Vampire, since that is what my friends would answer for me, but really I don't discriminate. I LOVE the paranormal world altogether!

  118. I'd have to say Team Demon, and one of my favorites is Eidolon from Larissa Ione's Pleasure Unbound.

  119. I think I will go with Vampire team and my favorite vampire is Mircea from the Cassandra Palmer series, author Karen Chance.

  120. TEAM DEMON ALL THE WAY!!!

There are a host of Demons in the Vampire Huntress Legend series by LA Banks that you often find yourself rooting for more than the Vamps. There are a couple Demons in the Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong that have some humor and do serious damage and in their own tricky way help the heroes. The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud is written in first person perspective by a mid-level demon! He's funny, devilishly clever, selfish and selfless. XD

    TEAM DEMON!!!!

(I do love my Vamps tho)

  125. Team Demon, definitely. Perhaps because vampires have been overrepresented in YA literature in recent times and I am ready for something new and shiny. Enter Team Demon, clearly! :D
