"When I'm not writing" with Kelly Meding

Kelly Meding The talented Kelly Meding is joining us this week for "When I'm not writing"! She's the author of the urban fantasy Dreg City series and the superhero series MetaWars. She's here today to promote the upcoming third MetaWars novel, TEMPEST, which builds on the two previous novels in the series, TRANCE and CHANGELING. Please join me in warmly welcoming Kelly to the blog!

WINW_logo

I'm half tempted to complete the sentence with "…I feel like I should be writing." Because that's very, very true. I suppose it's part of trying to balance writing with working a full-time job. I tend to feel guilty when I'm doing something else besides writing. But since that would make for a very short, very boring blog post, I do actually have a few hobbies that I occasionally find time to indulge in.

One of those hobbies is making jewelry. I've been dabbling in this for years. I grew up in a very crafty family. My aunt sews, scrapbooks, and crotchets. My mother can sew and knit. My grandmother was also a knitter. I'm pretty good with a sewing machine (I even made a corset once!), but I never picked up on knitting. My crafty habits skew away from fabric and thread. Over the years I've played around with ceramics painting, candle making, and glass painting.

The one hobby that's stuck around since high school, though, is jewelry. Jewelry is my thing, and it's one of the ways I express myself. I have two jewelry boxes worth of funky earrings, wild necklaces, rings shaped animals, and all kinds of bracelets. Most of these are store-bought, but my own pieces are sprinkled in here and there.

The majority of what I make is pairs of earrings. I still own the first pair I ever crafted:

Kelly Meding Earrings 1

I made these when I was in junior high. I found the gems in a tourist trap store in the Smokey Mountains during a family vacation. All I did was attach them to French hooks. They're twenty years old now, those earrings, and I still love them.

This is my work area:

Kelly Meding work space

All of those plastic containers? Yeah, you can guess what's in them. Lots and lots of beads, gems, findings, and other random things I've decided will one day make fun jewelry.

Did you know packs of wine charms are great for earrings?

Kelly Meding earrings 2

And bits of pins and broken jewelry can be repurposed into a necklace?

I don't get to sit down and make things as often as I'd like to nowadays, but I still collect items to use in the future. I pick them up at yard sales, flea markets, and in the bargain bins at Michael's. One day they'll become something beautiful.

Thank you for listening to me ramble! And a big thanks to Tynga for inviting me to be a part of this!

Here's the scoop on TEMPEST:

Tempest by Kelly Meding (MetaWars #3)The public doesn’t trust them. The government wants to control them. Being a superhero has never been this hard, especially for Tempest.
Two months after the discovery of the powerful, non-Meta Recombinants, the former Rangers—Meta-powered humans dedicated to preserving the peace—have made no progress in uncovering the newcomers’ origins, or convincing the public to trust them. Newly powered Metas are popping up and causing trouble, while the former Banes—Metas who harm humans and create chaos—show no inclination that they even want to leave the island prison of Manhattan. With a presidential election looming, the hot political debate is all about Meta rights—and whether they deserve to have any.

Still haunted by the murder of so many in the Meta War fifteen years earlier, Ethan “Tempest” Swift accepts an assignment in Manhattan, working with a team that’s interviewing Banes to determine which are still threats and which have reformed. But Ethan has a personal reason for going to the island as well. Armed with questions for the Bane who just might be his father, Ethan’s quest for answers is interrupted by an unexpected assault on the island. Forced to side with old enemies to uncover who's responsible for the devastating attack, Ethan begins to question more than just his past—he questions his place in defending a world that sees him as its enemy.

They’ll never see her coming. . . .
When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue—in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there—her troubles are only just beginning. Before that night she and the two other members of her Triad were the city’s star bounty hunters, mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor—and she can’t even remember what it was.

Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice—and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days Evy will die again—but this time there’s no second chance. . .

Living in your own skin is usually hard enough as it is, but Evangeline Stone has to deal with living in someone’s else skin since she awoke from the dead in the body of a girl who committed suicide. The weirdest thing, aside from the obvious, is that she doesn’t remember dying. With the help of her boss, she will try to get her memory back, bring justice for her own death and maybe save the world while she’s at it. All of it in less than 72 hours because she’s three days to dead… again.

Before I get down the the review itself, I just want to highlight how appropriate and fitting this book’s titles is. Too often you just can’t figure out what the title is all about, but in this case, it’s morbidly perfect. After being resurrected, Evy only have three days before she is once again deceased. Talk about a mood breaker!

Three Days to Dead is Kelly’s first book and even though I’ve read other books from her before, I was surprised by how good it was. It really doesn’t read like a debut novel and the plot was very intricate. It really shows that Meding paid attention to details and it was definitely worth it. As Evy investigates her death, weird encounters and mysteries starts piling up and while the story is easy to follow, most details won’t make sense until Kelly spells it out for us. Well at least, I didn’t figure it out by myself hehe. No body is who they seem, and the simplest explanation is always the wrong one. I really liked to be challenged that way and it really brings the novel to an higher standard.

The characters were delightful! Evy herself is edgy and tough and the things she faces, on top of her own death countdown hanging over her head, would’ve sent many in a psych ward. I loved how Evy’s personality clashed but also blended at times with the previous body’s host. Wyatt, Evy’s boss, also earned my love. He isn’t perfect – far from it- but he tries so hard to do the right thing and the not-really-romance between him and Evy really broke my heart. This pair is just amazing! Speaking of amazing, Kelly also included a plethora of Lore characters, all awesome and disturbing. From Trolls to Gargoyles, Fey, Goblins and your traditional Vampires and Shapeshifters, everyone is bound to find something they like!

Action-packed and full of suspense, the end really got me breathless. I shed a few tears and I was really anxious to finally know how everything would wrap-up. I honestly think Kelly Meding did a rocking job when she tied all the plot’s thread together, keeping us in the dark for so long.

Urban Fantasy fans will fall head over heels for this original series, so I strongly suggest you give it a try! Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on the second installment, As Lie the Dead. Good thing it’s already released!

Kelly Meding’s war-ravaged Los Angeles is ground zero for the ultimate Meta human showdown in this sexy, action-packed new series.

Fifteen years ago, Teresa “Trance” West was a skilled telepath and a proud member of the Ranger Corps. But ever since the Rangers were inexplicably rendered powerless at the climax of the devastating Meta War, she’s bounced from one dead-end job to another. Now her powers have reappeared just as mysteriously as they vanished— only they’re completely transformed and more potent than ever. And they’re threatening to destroy her.

Trance heads to Los Angeles to track down the surviving Rangers and discover who restored her powers—and why—but a phantom enemy is determined to kill them before they can reassemble. As they dodge his deadly attacks and come to terms with their new role as heroes, Trance and the rest of the team set out to annihilate the sinister madman . . . only to discover their own powers are his greatest weapons.

Fifteen years ago, a war between the Rangers and the Banes, two supernaturally talented factions, was rapidly destroying the States and the world in its crossfire. When the Banes (the bad guys) were about to win, killing the last Ranger children alive, they all suddenly -and painfully- lost their abilities. The Banes were locked up in a mega prison located on Manhattan island and the Ranger kids were spread across the States into foster families. The last fifteen years have been really hard on Trance, juggling three job to be able to pay rent and eat, her love life’s a real joke and the future seems no better. Everything changes though when her powers, well the wrong ones actually!, comes back to her. Not knowing what to do, she heads back to the old control base, to meet with her new destiny.

The MetaWars series really remind me of a mix  between Xmen & Heroes (the TV show) and as I enjoyed both, I was right in my element with this novel. Kelly Meding created a post-war world where people grew to fear the supernaturally talented beings, even though the Rangers helped with rescue mission and such in the past. When they all regain their powers and one of the Banes sets on a quest to kill all the remaining Rangers, consequences affecting humans won’t go unnoticed and the big bad needs to be stopped before he kills all the good guys one by one.

It was interesting to see the Rangers struggle with their long lost powers and try their best to do the right thing in a battle they barely have any experience of. Trance found herself in leadership position and it’s no an easy task. Worries and insecurities are eating her up, failure after failure doesn’t help her case but this dreadful situation puts her in a position to grow.  Gage, Trance’s sidekick and love interest, was extremely interesting. He supports Trance everyway he can, yet he won’t let her get close. The shuts her out, hiding his past and his feelings, and their tug-of-war relationship added to the tension in the novel.

True to every superhero story, the plot moved forward in a goal to eliminate the big bad but the long chain of defeat, surprising twist and turns and unlikely allies, made-up for an interesting chase. The end was like a domino chain effect, everything going down in rapid succession with our heroes lagging to catch up, culminating with an extremely surprising reveal of the mysterious bad guy (who’s identity/location was unknown the whole novel).

This Superhero story is a nice stray from the traditional Urban Fantasy path and even though it won’t make my top 10 favorite series ever, it is a great debut to a new series and I’m looking forward to the second installment, Changeling. Action-packed with just the right amount of romance, Trance will please the superheroes lovers out there!

A Christmas With… Kelly Meding

Xmas2_thumb1_thumb

I’m very happy to welcome Kelly Meding with us today to celebrate her recent release Trance and her upcoming Wrong Side of Dead in January. Make sure you read along to discover more about her Meta Wars series and an update on her Dreg city series!

---------------------

1- Trance is the first book in the Meta Wars series, how do you think the Dreg City fans will react?

So far, fans seem to be embracing the new series. MetaWars is a very different kind of world from Dreg City, in that all of the "paranormal" aspects are known to the public. The cast is different, and in MetaWars, the narrator of each book will change so we can "meet" all of the different characters. And hopefully readers who first discover me via TRANCE will find my Dreg City books, too.

2- Was it hard for you the create this whole new world?

Yes and no. No, in the sense that I've been working on the MetaWars world for years, and developing it over the course of my earliest writing years.  Yes, in the sense that the copy of TRANCE that went out into the world is pretty different from the first draft, in terms of back story and the origin of the Meta powers. It took a while to really grasp that and to incorporate it into the story in a way that made sense, and that I could use to my advantage story-wise. But I love having a whole new, non-Dreg City world to play in for a while.

3- Wrong Side of Dead is the last book planned in the Dreg City series, are you hoping to write more books in the series?

I would love to write more Dreg City books. I have an ending in mind, and I see the series as ending at book seven. But in the end, it's up to my publisher and whether or not they want more.

4- Can you share with us the top three reason readers should pick up Trance, and no need to convince me I already have my copy *winks*. (time for shameless promotion *g*)

One: superpowers, people! Who hasn't dreamed of being able to fly, or to shoot fireballs at people, or to lift a semi over their head with one hand?

Two: heart. One of my favorite themes is "the family you make," and my characters are very much a family. They grew up together, they lost each other, and then they found each other again. There is love, there is loss, there is heartache, but they are always a family.

Three: sensitive Beta hero. I have an affinity for the Beta hero, and I think Trance's hero, Gage, fits the bill nicely.

Now onto some Xmas-y questions.

5- What's your very first memory of Christmas as a kid?

Our tree. It was always a big production, putting up the tree. My parents had an artificial one, with lots of little individual branches. My mother would take half a day stringing colorful lights up and down each individual branch. She'd get frustrated and tired, but that tree shined by the time she was done. Then we'd cover it with ornaments, top to bottom, inside and out, and only Mom could hang the really delicate ones on the highest branches. Then we'd douse the entire thing with tinsel/icicles.  I'd sit and stare at that tree for hours, it was so beautiful.

6- Where you the kind of kid to cry while sitting on Santa's knees?

I don't think so. I only vaguely remember meeting Santa a few times, but I don't recall ever being scared of him. I remember mostly wanting to see him and make sure he was real. *grin*

7- What's a typical Christmas like in the Meding family?

Christmas hasn't been typical in a long time, as family members pass and kids get older. But generally we spend Christmas Eve with my mother's extended family, and then Christmas Day just sort of happens. We meet at someone's house, or travel to several houses. I always see my parents and sister/niece, and I try to see my brother and his kids.  No matter what, though, there are cookies.  It isn't Christmas unless I'm baking up a dozen kinds of cookies/candy.

8- If Teresa could have a perfect Christmas, what would it be like?

Peaceful. I think she'd like a day to spend with Gage and her teammates that didn't involve fear or danger. Maybe a morning opening gifts and eating cinnamon rolls, then a long, leisurely home-cooked dinner, with lots of laughter in between.

At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master Vampire who thought he’d seen it all. Then Kira appears—this fearless, beautiful…human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life, yet sending her away is unthinkable.
But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose between the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.
