Born in Blood is a short, atmospheric prequel that lays the foundation for what I’m guessing will be a much larger vampire saga. It follows Alistair Thorne—a scandalous nobleman in old London who spends his days seducing maidens and dodging consequences. That is, until one misstep sends him fleeing into the night… straight into the arms of a vampire who offers him salvation or death. He chooses immortality, sheds his name to become Axel, and the rest is bloody history.

Set in what feels like the 1700s or 1800s, with dukes, arranged marriages, and whispers of crossing the ocean to America, this novella has strong dark historical vibes. It’s quick and punchy—barely over an hour if you’re listening on audio—but it does a great job of introducing Axl’s origin and teasing what’s to come.

He’s definitely giving morally grey vampire vibes, and while I’m not sure if he’s one of the main love interests in the full-length novels, this story definitely made me curious to find out.

If you like historical settings, anti-heroes with bite, and fast-paced vampire origin tales, this is a great little intro to Sadie Kincaid’s world.
