PHE - Guest Post by Karen Akins + Giveaway

Loop Karen Akins

Today we're excited to be hosting Karen Akins, author of the brand new novel Loop, a humorous YA sci-fi slightly romantic time travel adventure.  When she's not writing, she's taking care of her two kids and spending time with her hubby.  Some of her claims to fame include winning her 3rd and 6th grade spelling bees and earning her inaugural membership to the SCBWI with a four-word summary of Corduroy: "Obsessive bear seeks closure."  In today's guest post, she's going to give us a little thrill with a Paranom' All Hallows Eve original story!

PHEf

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today to celebrate the release of LOOP!

One of the things about writing any story is that as the creator, you know so much more about your characters than ends up on the page. It’s fun to be able to share some of these “extras” with readers. :)

So…what would happen if Bree and the gang from LOOP went on a spooooooky adventure?

First of all, even if they begged me to go along, I would be like. “Nopity, nope, nope.” I do not do scary. I’m still reeling from watching Disney’s 1980 film Watcher in the Woods.

Yeah…looks pretty creepy, doesn’t it?

Especially if your name is KAREN just like the little girl in the movie, and you have long brown hair with bangs just like the little girl in the movie, and your older sister fogs up all the windows in your house and writes out your name backwards in them.

Where was I? Ahh, yes.

Bree’s a huge movie fan, so she’d spend the entire time analyzing what’s most likely to come next based on a typical horror film. “Do not go down the end of that dock, guys! Something is going to slither out of the water. Wait. What the blark am I saying? We can’t stay here. There’s an abandoned tool shed twenty feet away. Mimi! Stop talking to that stranger wearing a mask! That is clearly a horrible, horrible plan.”

Finn would try to act all protective of Bree, but secretly, he would be shaking in his shoes like Shaggy hiding behind Scooby Doo. Or Scooby Doo hiding behind Shaggy. Or both of them hiding behind the Mystery Machine.

I think the important thing here is that we all agree that Watcher in the Woods was the scariest movie ever made.

Thanks again for having me! I hope everyone enjoys LOOP. <3

Loop Karen AkinsMore about Loop:

At a school where Quantum Paradox 101 is a required course and history field trips are literal, sixteen year-old time traveler Bree Bennis excels…at screwing up.

After Bree botches a solo midterm to the 21st century by accidentally taking a boy hostage (a teensy snafu), she stands to lose her scholarship. But when Bree sneaks back to talk the kid into keeping his yap shut, she doesn’t go back far enough. The boy, Finn, now three years older and hot as a solar flare, is convinced he’s in love with Bree, or rather, a future version of her that doesn’t think he’s a complete pain in the arse. To make matters worse, she inadvertently transports him back to the 23rd century with her.

Once home, Bree discovers that a recent rash of accidents at her school are anything but accidental. Someone is attacking time travelers. As Bree and her temporal tagalong uncover seemingly unconnected clues—a broken bracelet, a missing data file, the art heist of the millennium—that lead to the person responsible, she alone has the knowledge to piece the puzzle together. Knowledge only one other person has. Her future self.

But when those closest to her become the next victims, Bree realizes the attacker is willing to do anything to stop her. In the past, present, or future.

  9. I always loved the concept of time travel but couldn't get past all of the potential trouble one might cause so I had to chuckle over the story summary. Sounds like it would be a fun read.
