Today, Megan Squires is joining us for our "When I'm not writing..." feature. Megan is on tour promoting the release of TRACED, the first book in her new Outlier Chronicles, a series about three teenagers who live in a world where the government, a.k.a. the Hub, choose and recruits students for various positions during their final semester of high school. Those three students are outliers who don't fit society's prescribed templates.
Keep reading to see what Megan does when she's not building this scary world and make sure to stick around for the giveaway because it's a good one!
I love creating something out of nothing. I think that’s why I love to write—to physically make and hold something that didn’t exist before is such a rush. I’m so lucky that I get to do that in other areas of my life, too.
When I’m not writing, I’m running my newborn and senior photography studio based out of Sacramento, California. I have the best job in the world, getting to snuggle brand new babies for hours, and then hand them back and get a full night’s sleep of my own. It’s something I love doing—just as much as writing—and I feel so blessed that I get to do both.
I’m also a chauffeur, driving my two kiddos around to basketball, cheer, tap, and drum practice. Both my photography and writing careers allow for flexibility in my life, and I am so grateful that I’m able to prioritize to make sure my children always come first. They are my inspiration and my little muses and have given me numerous plot suggestions and have even named a few of my characters.
Any other free time I might have is spent sleeping. I’m a serious night owl—often writing until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning—and spend any extra time I might have curled up under the covers.
With two young kiddos, a busy photography business, and dream to write I don’t have much free time, but what time I do have belongs to my family. They are my biggest fans and supporters and I know I couldn’t do any of this without them.

Here's the scoop on TRACED:
Tessa can’t sleep.
But when your parents are dead and the government directs your path in life, sleep shouldn’t come easily. Lately, Tessa’s fitful nights are growing even more predictable, almost like déjà vu. And she’s beginning to think that something greater is at work—something her society has taken drastic measures to keep hidden.
Caught between self-discovery and government conformity, she’ll have to choose either the boy who can help her reveal this new truth or the one that can provide her with the security of familiarity.
Tessa’s faced with a weighty decision. And she’s going to need more than a good night’s sleep to make it.
