How do you send a killer to the grave when he’s already dead?
Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving–leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.
Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity–forever. But one wrong step and they’ll be digging their own graves.
Cat & Bones faced a lot of very nasty situations, but this time around, they might just have found the adversary they can’t defeat. Kramer, a witch hunter/ serial killer, cheated the grave, becoming a ghost, and found a way to take physical form on the night of Halloween to kill women (supposedly witches, according to the culprit). When the lovely Elisabeth, a former victim of Kramer’s witch hunting, comes to Cat for help, she can’t decline, but how do you kill someone that’s already dead and don’t even have a body?
I really liked the fact that Frost took us down a new path with this ghost killer. Cat & Bones are equipped to defeat many adversaries, but a ghost really challenged them and they had to be very imaginative if they wanted a shot at this misogynist killer. I enjoyed meeting Elisabeth and Tyler, two new characters, and the latter was rather funny and colorful.
The plot line was enjoyable if not all that surprising. The main line was rather linear, but Cat & Bones’ inventive ghost hunting techniques kept us entertained. A Jack-ass also stole Tate’s job at the agency and I’m very curious about him. I hope we’ll find what’s his deal in the next novel.
I’m a huge fan of the Night Huntress series and even though I loved One Grave at a Time, two elements were missing for me. First, I wanted steamier sex scenes! Jeaniene usually delivers sultry and inventive sex scenes and the one in this novel was original but not quite as hot. I also really missed Vlad. I just love the guy to death and wished he was there, even just a bit. Thankfully he has his own series coming soon so I should be able to satiate my Vlad cravings.
The conclusion was exciting as usual and it won’t disappoint. I don’t know when the next Cat& Bones book is due, but it can’t be soon enough!
My Verdict:
Action-packed and magnetizing, One Grave at a Time was a great addition to the amazing Night Huntress series.
