Interview with Lauren Kate

Hello my lovelies! Today I have the huge honor to introduce you to Lauren Kate, author of Fallen and Betrayals of Natalie Hargrove.

This interview is focused on Fallen (because I loved it SO much!) and on Lauren so we can get to know her better! Make sure to read on, I promise you'll discover many interesting tidbits =D

Would you like to do a short description of Fallen?

When Lucinda Price ends up a boarding school in Savannah, GA, she's looking for a way to escape her past. The last thing she expected was to find herself caught in a love triangle with two otherworldly hotties who have--unbeknownst to her--been battling over her for centuries.

If you had to describe the main characters in 2 words, what would it be?

Luce: stubborn and romantic
Daniel: stunning and tormented
Cam: dangerous and alluring
Arriane: zany and fresh
Penn: dependable and smart

A reform school is a very original idea for a book setup, where did it come from?

There’s a line in Bob Dylan’s song Not Dark Yet: “I’ve been down at the bottom of a world full of lies.” I think that’s where Luce finds herself at the beginning of the novel. She’s at the end of what she sees as a long line of failures, uncertain about who or what to believe. Her character is a) stunned to end up at reform school, and b) certain that she cannot sink any lower. It takes something drastic (like reform school) to get her to a place where she stops expecting her life to look exactly as she’d planned, and opens herself up to a host of interesting opportunities. Plus--it's a great place to introduce some bad boy love interest!

Many says Angels are the new Vampires, what do you think about that?

It's possible! I think what draws us to angels might be similar to what draws us to vampires. Most of us grow up with some sort of angel mythology--whether it comes from a religious upbringing, or a cultural context. We have an idea of what they're supposed to look like (flawless features, fluffy white wings), how they're supposed to behave (always perfectly benevolent), and what they're supposed to do (well, I suppose biblically, they're messengers of god, culturally there's the idea of a "guardian angel"). For readers, there's an almost built-in collective conscience about angels--which is great because it's comfortable/accessible. For authors, there is so much room to play off these existing expectations, rewrite old stories, and experiment. So there's something in it for all of us!

How many books can we expect in the series? ( the more the better if you ask me ^^)

There are going to be four. TORMENT comes out in October, and after that I'll be writing a prequel, which will explore all of Luce and Daniel's past lives. The final book in the series will complete their story.

Let's learn a bit more about you, if you don't mind =D

Are you a romantic? Your favorite romantic movie?

In my teens, I was always more theoretically romantic than practically romantic, meaning I loved romance in books and movies and music. But in real life, a lot of times romance just seemed…cheesy. When I started writing, I was actually surprised how many of my stories centered on romance. A lot of my ex-boyfriends would probably say I wasn’t romantic enough. Things are different now that I’ve met my husband and everything feels naturally romantic. I guess that’s how I knew it was true love!

Favorite romantic movie--I think City Lights is desperately and beautifully romantic.

Your favorite book ever written?

Right now, probably The Great Gatsby, which is also desperately and beautifull romantic.

Your favorite song?

My husband Jason Morphew is a singer/songwriter. His song, Taking Things For Granted on his album Vaporizer, is a favorite of mine.

Where are we most likely to find you at 11pm?

Having a glass of wine and watching a movie with Jason, or out to dinner with friends. I love late dinners. It's one of the best things about not having a 9-5 job!

What's your craziest dream?

Literal dream? I dream crazy stuff almost every night and put a lot of stock in my dreams. I keep a dream journal to write them all down. In the last one I wrote down, I was working at a burger joint and delivering the food in a go-cart all around LA. That is but one example of my weird subconsciousness.

and last but not least,

What's for you the best aspect of being an author?

Well, I've already mentioned not having to wake up early in the morning! But there are so many other things about writing that I love. I love the rare moments of exhilaration when I really get on a roll with a scene, and the dialogue and emotions of the characters are flowing freely. I love getting feedback from my agent and editor and working to revise and make the story better. And I love coming out from behind my computer at the end of a draft, getting to interact with readers at bookstores and signings and in interviews like this one. For me, this is the greatest job there is. I feel very lucky almost every day.

Thank you very much Lauren for taking the time to share with us and giving such honest answers! It was a pleasure to meet you and I am looking forward to your next release !
