Reaper's Touch by Eleri Stone

REAPER'S TOUCH is something of a cowboys vs. zombies novel, wrapped in a paranormal romance. Eleri Stone has created a really interesting world that reminds me a lot of the setting of Firefly and Serenity, Joss Whedon's criminally cancelled TV show-turned-movie. The show was an amazing dystopian space western; the Reaper world is very similar, except it's not set in space. It's set in a very different America, in which the frontier is plagued by Reapers, people who have become infected with a parasite that turns them into cannibalistic, brutal killers who roam the fringes of the civilized world, raiding, raping, infecting, and killing. (They're quite similar to the Reavers from Firefly and Serenity).

Generally, the characters are well developed. As one of the few people with a natural immunity, Abby had no choice but to become a Ranger, part of the band that try to keep the Reapers away from the settlers. Understandably, she has quite a chip on her shoulders: she's expected to breed since every child she would have would be immune and would be drafted into the Rangers. There are some who would prefer she be sequestered away but Abby wants to be on the front lines, finding it a better alternative even though she lacks the killer instinct. She's an easy character to like and understand. Jake, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. As a sentient Reaper almost 200 years old, he has a lot of baggage in addition to the murderous parasite that lives inside him. He's very Jekyll and Hyde in a lot of ways but he fights the parasite every step of the way because he's so invested in the search for a cure. He's subjected himself to merciless scientists as part of this quest and is willing to do anything that might help.

Watching them fall for each other is a slow but fairly natural progression. Their mutual attraction is dampened by their distrust for each other at certain points but you can see the feelings between them grow as REAPER'S TOUCH progresses. Despite that, for me, the love story was less interesting than the setting, though it is well written. I was much more engaged by the world, with its glaring class distinctions, rugged setting, and dangers at every turn. I really enjoyed the historical western setting, especially since it's been combined with some neat science.

REAPER'S TOUCH is well worth your time if you like post-apocalyptic romance, especially if you're willing to take a chance on something historical. The worldbuilding in this story is wonderful and REAPER'S TOUCH is the beginning of what will hopefully be a standout paranormal romance series. Give the excerpt a try to see if it's to your tastes.

"When I'm not writing..." with Gina Damico + giveaway!

Gina Damico

Today's guest is Gina Damico, author of CROAK and SCORCH, YA novels about a teenage reaper named Lex Bartleby. She's currently doing a real life blog tour around the eastern half of the United States (!) but she's graciously made time to join us in the virtual world to tell us what she does when she's not working on her next story.

Do you want to know what Gina does when she's not writing? Well then, you better stick around! And don't forget to enter the giveaway for a signed copy of SCORCH!

When I'm not writing, I'm keeping busy somehow or other, no matter what. If I'm not being productive in some way, I feel like a useless lump, and then I get cranky, and then I yell at my cat, and then the entire situation devolves into a feline staredown, and there's just no way I'm winning that.

So, productive it is. Here is a list of ways that I keep busy:

1. I market. Writing is fun and all, and I wish I could do it all the time, but these books have got to sell, sell, sell, baby. Or get checked out of the library, checked out of the library, checked out of the library, baby. However they're read, people aren't just going to wake up one day with the idea that they should read this book they've never heard of, and so it's (partially) my job to get the word out there about it. So I blog, I make swag, I do these lovely blog interviews. One of these days I'll get a sandwich board made and take to the streets.

2. I crochet or knit. Yes, I'm one of these nerds. I knit garments, and I crochet all sorts of things - including this little grim and other kinds of monsters and freaks of nature. You should see my yarn stash. It's embarrassing.

3. I travel. I'm writing this from a hotel room in Chicago, where I have stopped on my big Slapdash Road Trip Book Tour. I'm driving from Boston, MA to Austin, TX and then back again - in part to accomplish a bit of #1 - but mostly because I realized I'd never been on a road trip before and wanted to see some more of the country through the windows of a poo-colored rental car. So far I have determined that Ohio has a lot of farmland, Indiana has a lot of Amish, and hotels have a lot of crappy coffee that I will suck down regardless of their taste or ability to perk up.

Reaper Madness banner

4. I watch TV. A lot of it. Less than I used to, but still enough for me to feel guilty that I'm wasting my life away.

5. I deal with the puppy. My husband and I rescued a dog a few months ago, and he was only three months at the time, and HOO BOY puppies are a lot of work. I do a fair amount of following him around the house, hoping and praying that he's not going to start peeing everywhere. This, one might argue, is the least productive thing of anything on this list, and that would be correct. I can't tell you how many times this summer I've had to stop working on my third book just to get up, drag the dog outside, and lovingly coax some bodily fluid out him. Quite a talent, that.

Thanks for having me, and happy reaping reading!

Here's the scoop on SCORCH (coming October 25):

Gina Damico ScorchSixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby is a teenage grim reaper with the bizarre ability to Damn souls. That makes her pretty scary, even to fellow Grims. But after inadvertently transferring her ability to Zara, a murderous outlaw, Lex is a pariah in Croak, the little town she calls home. To escape the townspeople’s wrath, she and her friends embark on a wild road trip to DeMyse. Though this sparkling desert oasis is full of luxuries and amusements, it feels like a prison to Lex. Her best chance at escape would be to stop Zara once and for all—but how can she do that from DeMyse, where the Grims seem mysteriously oblivious to Zara’s killing spree?

You should also check out CROAK, the first book in the series:

Gina Damico CroakSixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.

He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach her the family business.

Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.

Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she’s forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren’t supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex’s curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

PAF: Story by Christina Henry + giveaway!

Paranormal April Fools

Today's post is a great story by Christina Henry, author of the Madeline Black urban fantasy series. I adore Maddy, Beezle, and the world they live in and I bet you do, too! Christina's written a wonderful short story for us and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Maddy Black books, here's a very quick description of the characters in the story:

Maddy (the narrator): Agent of Death, granddaughter of Lucifer.

Beezle: Maddy's gargoyle and best friend.

Gabriel: Maddy's bodyguard.

Read on to find out what Christina's got in store for her characters! And make sure to stick around for the giveaway, where you have a chance to win a copy of BLACK HOWL, courtesy of the lovely folks at Penguin!

---------------------------------

This story takes place between the events
of BLACK WINGS and BLACK NIGHT.

“There’s someone on the front lawn,” Beezle announced. He was perched on the sill of the picture window, peering into the darkness of the evening. It was December, and dark came early this time of year in Chicago.

I was at my desk trying to figure out how to spin straw into gold, because that was just about the only way I was going to meet my expenses that month. Unfortunately, the ability to turn grass into treasure had not been included in my magical skill set.

“Who is it?” I asked, distracted.

“You,” he said.

That got my attention. “What?”

“It looks like you.” He was staring with intense concentration, which meant that my gargoyle was looking through all the layers of reality to see the true nature of the person on the lawn. “It looks like you, but it’s not moving.”

“Someone put a statue of me on my lawn?” I asked, walking over to the window to join him. I looked out the window and saw the object in my yard. In the glow of the streetlight it did look real, and disconcertingly like me.

Beezle shook his head. “It’s not a statue, but it does seem to be clay.”

“A sculpture?” The object was making me uneasy. It was like looking at a copy of myself watching the house. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. “Whatever it is, I’m getting rid of it.”

Beezle frowned. “It doesn’t seem to have any magic attached to it, but be careful anyway. Whoever left it might still be hanging around.”

“I will,” I promised. I pulled on my boots and coat and headed downstairs.

Gabriel, my bodyguard, was in his own apartment below mine. I thought about knocking on his door, but then decided I could handle a lump of clay on my own. If I knocked on his door he might think I’d done it just so I could see him, and even though I wanted to see him I didn’t want him to think that I did. I blew out an annoyed breath. Life was a lot easier without romantic complications.

The clay copy was posed on the lawn, hands at its sides. Up close it was even more unnerving. It was an amazingly precise copy of me, from the dark curly hair that tumbled over its shoulders to the black overcoat that I usually wore.

I tried to figure out how to lift the thing and carry it to the alley. I’d just about concluded that I’d have to ask Gabriel for help anyway when the clay copy moved.

Its hands were around my neck in an instant, squeezing tight. It lifted me from the ground, its face smooth and unconcerned, its eyes as blank as a doll’s. I choked, gasped for air, kicked out to no avail.

I tried to focus, to summon up my will and my magic. It was still difficult for me to call my powers easily, but mortal peril does wonders for your concentration. I closed my hands around the wrists of the clay doll and pushed all the magic I had in me through the palms of my hands.

Cracks appeared in the surface of the doll’s face, and a moment later its grip loosened. The clay burst into dust, the motes glowing blue with nightfire.

I rubbed my throat, sure that I would have bruises tomorrow.

Someone clapped their hands behind me, and I spun around, nightfire on my palm.

Lucifer stood on my porch, grinning.

“Did you send that thing?” I asked, and could tell by the expression on his face that he had. “Why?”

“Perhaps I wanted to see what you were capable of.” The Prince of Darkness gestured at the nightfire. “It’s not generally considered polite to threaten your grandfather.”

I kept the nightfire where it was. “It’s not generally considered polite to try to kill your granddaughter by proxy.”

“I would not have allowed you to die,” Lucifer said, but something about the way that he said it made me think that maybe he would have let me die, if it suited me purpose. “It was just a little prank.”

“Prank?” I said, getting more annoyed by the minute. Maybe I would blast him with nightfire just because he was irritating.

“April Fool?” he said.

“It’s not April.”

“It could be,” he said carelessly. “I’m a very old being, you know. I lose track of the months.”

“I don’t think you lost track of anything,” I said. “I think you know exactly what you’re doing at all times.”

Lucifer winked at me, and then he disappeared in a puff of smoke, just as the devil should.

Something is wrong with the souls of Chicago's dead. Ghosts are walking the streets, and Agent of Death Madeline Black's exasperating boss wants her to figure out why. And while work is bad enough, Maddy has a plethora of personal problems too. Now that Gabriel has been assigned as her thrall, their relationship has hit an impasse. At least her sleazy ex-fiancé Nathaniel is out of the picture--or so she thinks.

I’ve been a fan of Christina Henry since her very first book, Black Wings. She just knows how to write good urban fantasy with non-stop action, likeable characters and the right touch of romance.

In Black Howl, Maddy who is an Agent of Death and responsible for escorting the souls of the dead to the Door, has a lot on her plate. She is asked to help a pack of werewolves whose cubs have gone missing, while trying to stay under her father’s and her grandfather’s radar. On top of all that, Chicago’s ghosts are acting really weird.

Maddy hasn’t changed or grown much character-wise: she is still a little bit too reckless for her own good and acts rashly more often than is safe for her. This unhealthy habit maneuvers her into more than one tight spot. I sometimes wished she would think about the consequences for just one second. Her rushing into a situation while knowing it is a bad idea can be very frustrating for the reader. I often felt like screaming at her to act more level-headed.

The relationship between her and Gabriel, the love of her life, has never been an easy one. But ever since the events of the previous books, it is put under even more pressure. Being her thrall now, Gabriel has to do everything Maddy wants. Even though she doesn’t abuse the power she has over him, Gabriel often lashes out at Maddy (if you ask me, he suffers from some kind of inferiority complex). Still, Christina Henry creates a few scenes where they move forward as a couple; some of said scenes are romantic, some rather tragic, but each one really moved me and made me feel for Maddy and Gabriel.

Beezle has to be one of the funniest and snarkiest sidekicks I have ever encountered and I´m not ashamed to admit that he is my favorite character in this series. His snarky comments, constant craving for doughnut and his ability to sleep at the strangest of times make him very endearing and add a comic relief to some of the darker scenes.

Another highly interesting character is Jude, the shifter who asks for Maddy’s help. At first I was a bit reluctant to like him because of his unapologetic, accusatory behavior towards Maddy, but after a jaw dropping revelation about his past, I’m now more than eager to learn more about him.

The supernatural world in Christina Henry’s Chicago might not be too complex, but the politics surely are. You can´t help but feel bad for Madeline, since everyone seems to see her only as a pawn. Every situation and plight she stumbles upon seems to have been planned ahead by one of the power players around her, in order to provoke something they want. That’s really sad, since everything Maddy wants is to be left alone with her “family”. On the other hand, it also adds up to a very interesting story with many, intricately woven story arcs that combine in one final, cataclysmic event.

The end of Black Howl came as a shock, both for Maddy and for me. She has to learn that eventually, her luck runs out and her rash actions will have consequences. I´m not sure how the next book will continue and if what happened is actually final. I can´t wait to find out!

Once again, Christina Henry has written an enthralling and riveting story with compelling and funny characters and a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended for all lovers of urban fantasy series!

I'm Madison Avery, in charge of heaven's hit squad . . . and fighting it all the way.

When Madison died the night of her prom, she knew her life would never be the same. Now she has a powerful amulet, a team of rogue angels by her side, and the ability to flash forward into the future to see the shape of destiny. And of course, now she's finally with Josh—a perfect boyfriend who doesn't even mind that she's dead.

But being dead has its disadvantages, too. Madison feels caught between the light and the dark, and between her real life and her timekeeper status. When Madison has the opportunity to get her body back—to be alive again—she faces her most difficult decision yet. If she claims it, she could return to being a normal girl—and have a chance at a real relationship with Josh. But would having the one thing she wants most in the world also mean giving up everything she's worked so hard for?

After succeeding a first time in saving someone’s soul without having to sacrifice their life, Madison, Nakita & Barnabas are even more determined in changing heaven rules, even if doubt is still lurking in the corners of their mind. This time, they will try to save a girl named Tammy, from a joyless, lonely life without her soul. Will they succeed again or will they Seraph claim her soul back early?

I was really happy to see those great characters once more. I love their personalities, their conviction and determination to do what’s right, even if the path is challenging. Madison will go to extreme length to reach her goal, fighting body and soul in a battle that seems to be a lost cause. You can’t help but admire her drive even when doubt shadows her thoughts. Barnabas is still my favorite. He’s the sweetest thing and always knows the right thing to say.

The Madison Avery books are always quick reads (~250 pages) but the plot line was good and smooth. Kim always manages to surprise her readers with a  twist or another. This book is the last installment in the series, and the way it was wrapped-up was satisfying. There would be room for more to this story though, so maybe we’ll be blessed with a short story?

The Madison Avery series is an epic battle between light and dark angels, fighting over human souls, in the name of free will & Fate respectively. The subject could be heavy but Harrison wrote it in fashionable lightness to make it an highly entertaining read.

Is your soul safe from an unexpected reap?

My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent

WHEN KAYLEE CAVANAUGH SCREAMS, SOMEONE DIES
AND KAYLEE IS ABOUT TO SCREAM HER HEAD OFF...

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.
Until something does.
Demon’s breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow, the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.
And so is someone else…

My soul to keep is the third novel (forth if you count the novella prequel) and it takes the Soul Screamers series a lot more deeper than I expected.

Kaylee is finally done with her purgatory aka grounded for going into the Netherworld, when the book starts. And like all the previous books this one will also start with a BAM when a party goes havoc and Kaylee discovers that one of her classmates is using Demon’s Breath, a very dangerous and highly addictive Netherworld drug. Caring as she is, she will once more put her life on the line to try and protect the ones she loves, or not so much, from supernatural threats. But nothing Kaylee faced before could prepare her for what’s to come.

Vincent managed to stun me in this installment, which she already did with her adult series, but hadn’t happen yet, for me, in her young adult series. She put her characters is such impossible distress that my heart ached for them, and I couldn’t stop myself from reading even thought what I read broke my heart.

The characters really are the key element in this series, even though the whole worldbuilding is unique and engrossing. Kaylee grew a lot in that round and none of her decisions were easy. I loved how she tried to keep her composure and finally asked for help from the adults of the book, even if they once again don’t hold any major roles. Tod also proved his loyalty and showed some less twisted morality in this book, and even though he made a huge mistake, he will do his best to repair the broken pieces. I stay true to my previous reviews, Tod is still my favorite character of the series! On the other hand, one of the characters really disappointed me, it was a very audacious move from Vincent and it worked perfectly. That character broke my heart, but it was just perfect for the plot. While I saw it coming, I never would’ve guessed how deep the betrayal was. I know I am being vague here, but I don’t wanna to ruin anything for you guys!

The end was fast-paced and surprising and nothing will ever be the same for any of the characters. This book is definitely a turning point in the series and there are no going back. I really can’t wait to see what Vincent has cooked for us in My Soul to Steal, but I’m sure it won’t be any easier for the characters.
