Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

I'm loving this wonderful series set in a fictional small town in South Carolina! The magic is magical and the setting is comfortable and the characters are really likable. Beautiful Darkness is the second book in the Caster Chronicles series, so this review may contain a few spoilers. To read the review of the first book, Beautiful Creatures, click here.

I just about started this review with "this is the first series featuring witches/witchcraft that I've enjoyed!" and then remembered Harry Potter.  But aside from Harry Potter, this is the first series featuring this much magic that I've loved.  The setting grabbed me and pulled me in heart and soul.  The books are set in Gatlin, SC, a small fictional town just outside of Summerville, SC, which is near Charleston, SC.  I grew up in SC!  The authors do a great job representing the state.  I love hearing the descriptions of the food and the culture.  Lena even makes a comment at one point about all the different casseroles that show up on her doorstep when tragedy strikes.  So true!  If someone you loves dies in the South, you can totally expect an avalanche of casseroles to be delivered to your house.  This book happens to take place in June, so there's mention of the climate also.  Again- the authors nail it.  There's mention of the weighty, oppressive heat peppered into the story.  It's all very natural and unobtrusive.  Being a YA book, the action continually moves forward without any lengthy descriptive passages.  Still, the setting itself, with the heat and the culture and the traditional magic (like the Gullah magic that Amma works) almost act as a minor character.

The characters are awesome too.  First, the uniqueness of point of view:  the book is told by Ethan Waite, a non-magical male.  Seems like most of the magical/witchy books are told from the female perspective.  (At least in the YA realm.  I haven't tried any "grown up" witchy books.)  Ethan is such a good guy.  I want to be his friend, and also can't help but wonder if I'd be worthy of being his friend.  He's not perfect- he definitely has some moments- but overall he's so good.  So much better than many actual teenage boys I know.  You can really see the influence of his Amma in him.  I love reading about how much he cares for his family and friends.

Lena is almost a secondary character in this book.  The whole plot is driven by her; is about her; but yet she's not a truly active player in all of it.  Instead, Ethan and Linc spend a large portion of the book "chasing" her.  (I don't want to say too much and spoil anything!)  Just like how the first book was all about a build-up to Lena's sixteenth moon; this book is about her seventeenth moon.  Lena is just as communicative as ever... *insert sarcasm*  And of course you'll have to read the book to find out if she claims herself for light or dark!  It's not obvious:  you'll be on the metaphorical edge of your seat as you read this book.  Along the way, you'll experience lots of Caster magic and all the members of the Ravenwood family and lots of mystery.

I listened to Beautiful Darkness, and the narrator did a fantastic job.  He had a Southern accent that wasn't too overdone or anything.  His pacing and enunciation were spot on.  I would definitely recommend this audiobook.  There were also some sound effects scattered throughout too, which is rare!  They were really well done.  Not too many; not too few.  And each time the seventeen moons song came up, it was actually sung by a female, to music.  I think this is one of those rare cases where the audiobook may actually be slightly better than the physical book!

Overall, a great series and a great book.  Two thumbs up!

Daring You To Read… Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

0daringyou_thumb[2]

Daring You To Read is a weekly feature here on Tynga’s Reviews where we dare you to read some of our favorite older releases (at least 6 months old). All the books/series we choose to feature are titles we adored and think you should give them a shot! We think it’s a super awesome way to discover that special book who might have slipped off your radar!

You’ve already read the book? Let’s us know what you thought!
You are accepting the dare? We’d love to know!
Have a dare of your own? Leave a comment ^^

I have a feeling some people won’t exactly agree with me on this dare. I read BEAUTIFUL CREATURES by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl about a month ago and I immediately fell in love with the dark but thrilling southern tale. Some critics aren’t too crazy about the series because they say it’s not very realistic and that the book drags on for nothing. I obviously disagree with that because I’m daring you to read it this week! I’m not from the south so I don’t know how realistic it really is but lets face it, it is a story about magic and witches (or casters as they call them in this book), so how real can it actually be? And personally, I really liked all the extra details that shaped the story into this thick and long book. I really don’t think you should critic a book based on the page count.

This YA book was one of my favorite YA reads of 2012 so it’s no wonder it found its way onto this post. All the characters are well developed which made it so easy to fall for the story. It was full of mystery and a lots of unknowns, exactly how I like my books. I like to be kept guessing right until the end, and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES did that wonderfully.

I still haven’t read the other three books of the series so I’m only speaking for the first, but if the rest is anything like this one, I’m sure they’ll be great. Some people must agree with me that this book is worth reading because a movie is coming out on February 13, 2013. Check out the movie trailer down below.

beautiful creatures #1Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Smart Chicks Kick It Tour – Event Recap

Saturday was a really awesome day for me. Not only did I travel to Montréal to meet Tynga and many other Montréal bloggers, but I also got to meet these lovely ladies:

P1010081

Yes! Those are the Smart Chicks (or les poulettes intélligentes as Margaret Stohl would say) from the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour. Their stop in Montréal might not have been as huge as some of their other stops (I mean, it had to compete with cities like Las Vegas!) but it was a chance of a life time I could not pass up.

SCKI Tour Poster-3 X 4

The Pointe Claire Chapters was nice enough to host the event and I think they did a pretty good job of it. I mean, they had to deal with us book bloggers, taking over their area. Look at how much room we took. You can see Cindy from Cindy’s Love of Books (left), Tynga (middle) and myself (right) surrounded by piles of books, ready to be signed. It was practically a fire hazard!

Unfortunately, the authors told us that we weren’t able to take any video or audio recordings of the event because they sometimes say things that they shouldn’t. And of course, they didn’t want people to actually have proof of their “bad behavior.” One author (she will remain nameless because I don’t want to get her into trouble), even said that that if you’re an new author and you want to get published, the first step is getting an agent. Because an agent is a monster you keep on a leash whom you can unleash on the publisher or someone else when things go bad.

The authors also shared some of their book news, and some of their books-to-movies news. Of course, Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl was filmed this summer and is coming out February 13, 2013 (awesome release date, right?).

And even more exciting news is from Kelley Armstrong who told us that the first book from her Women of the Otherworld series, Bitten, will be made into a 13 episode TV series by Space! Personally, I think TV series are way better than movies because it allows so much more of the story to make it to the screen. According to Kelley, casting should begin early 2013 and the show will premiere sometimes in the fall of 2013. You can find out more about it here. Yay for Canadian television!

P1010093During the event, many books and Chapters Indigo gift cards were given away. But I was lucky enough to get this prize pack from Rosemary Clement-Moore since I travelled almost 10 hour to get to the event. Usually it takes me about 8 hours and a half to travel from my small town near Sudbury to Montreal but on Saturday, took me about an extra hour to get there. Problem was, I decided to leave really early in the morning (like at 3 am), which in theory would have been good to avoid as much traffic as possible. Unfortunately, there was an area of the highway they were repaving and I got stuck waiting for about 20 minutes. And then, sometimes after the sun rose, it truly hit me that I only go 3 hours of sleep so I decided to stop for a little breakP1010092 and have a good breakfast (and a quick nap). Oh, and then there’s the fact that I went to the wrong place when I got to Montréal. I had a hard time finding the Chapters that hosted the event but hurray! for my Iphone that guided me to the right place! So, for all this extra trouble, I go a Texas themed prize. I have to say, that Texas Two-Step chocolate was awesome! If I ever visit Texas, I’ll have to make sure to stock up! Thanks Rosemary!

I was really happy to get all my books signed (see image on the right). The authors were nice enough to sign all our copies. Of course, most of my books were from Kelley Armstrong. She was probably the most popular author there, since she is Canadian. I won’t bore you with pictures of all the signatures. You’ll just have to take my word for it. =D

I also bought a few books, including Enthralled, which is an anthology written by many of the authors of the tour. Melissa Marr explained to me that since this a tour organized by authors and not their publishers, the travelling expenses must be paid by the authors themselves. That’s where the idea for an anthology came from. It was published more or less to help pay for the Smart Chicks Kick It tour. I thought it was pretty genius idea.

This will definitively be a day I never forget. I’m glad we took many pictures including some with the authors. I was actually surprised how warm and friendly they all were. And I must say, Margaret Stohl was a riot! She had a quirky and hilarious comment for everything.

Thank you again to all of the people who organized this tour, especially Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr. Also, this event would not have been possible if it weren’t for Chapters Indigo, so thank you!

Beautiful Creatures Fan Art

Once more I am joining Katie from Sophistikatied Reviews, to feature Fan Art!

As you know if you read my review, I loved Beautiful Creatures by Kami & Magaret so I decided to create my own Fan Art.

But before showing you the one I created, and are the official covers (Source)

This last one is my personal favorite =)

Now the cover I created….

I chose the Olsen twins because I wanted girls who looked alike to personify Lena (Mary-Kate Olsen) and Ridley (Ashley Olsen). I have to say I am proud of the eyes lol

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

beautiful-creaturesLena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations.

Beautiful Creatures is set in the small town of Gatlin where everything is about gossips and the memory of the Civil War. Ethan is lost in the flow after his mother’s death and hopes to leave this middle-of-no-where-town as soon as possible. He has been haunted by very weird dreams for the past weeks. Dreams of a girl he is desperately trying to save without ever succeeding and waking up soaked wet or full of mud depending on the dream. His wondering will come to an end when a new girl moves in town to live with her uncle, the town’s hermit, in his supposedly haunted manor and she will completely change his life, for better or for worse.

This book is quite thick (560ish pages) and I have to say it took me a little while to really get into the story, but once I was in though, it didn’t take long until I flipped the last page. At first everything is mysterious and fuzzy. Ethan meets this girl everyone is taking great pleasure picking on, and it won’t take long until he realize she is the girl from his dreams. They can also talk to each other with their mind but you have no idea what’s going on until page 140ish when you get to learn what Lena really is, and she’s not human. That’s when the story picked up for me. The plot took a stronger turn and characters had a mission. I enjoyed following them, learning more about this mysterious world no human is aware of along side with Ethan.

Beautiful Creatures is different from every Young Adult Paranormal I’ve read before. First because it’s from a boy point-of-view, and the mystical creatures involved are unique and intriguing. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes of this town than the little touristic country town popular for it’s reenactment of the Honey Hill Battle. You don’t get to know who are Ethan & Lena’s allies and enemies until the very end because not every secondary characters really are what they pretend to be, and some of the revelations were a shock to me.

I loved both main characters, they were both truly awesome. Sometimes weak, other times strong, they complimented each other perfectly. I also had a sweet spot for Link, his isn’t that major character but he is so charming. Ridley, Lena’s cousin made a good impression on me, there is more to her than eyes can see!

The end was fast-paced and spectacular. So much happened in so little time and I can’t wait to see the consequences to the choices that were made. Good for me, Beautiful Darkness will be out soon!
