The Dragon Conspiracy by Lisa Shearin

[I'm writing this post very quickly due to work commitments so please don't mistake my brevity for anything other than a lack of time. THE DRAGON CONSPIRACY is a wonderful book from one of my favourite authors and I wish that I could do it justice with this post.]

With THE DRAGON CONSPIRACY, Lisa Shearin has gotten even more awesome! (I didn't think this was possible.) I was thrilled with the first book in the SPI Files and Shearin's done a remarkable job of making the characters and world more exciting in this, the next instalment.

This time around, SPI's turf has been invaded by an evil Russian dragon named Viktor Kain. He's shown up with the Dragon Eggs in tow, magical jewels with largely unknown powers. He claims it's to sell them but the eggs ended up getting stolen. Needless to say, an unhappy dragon, a mystery foe, and a flock of harpies (do harpies travel in flocks?) lead to a an exciting adventure for the readers, and extreme peril for Makenna, Ian, and the rest of SPI. We get to learn more about some of the other races that inhabit the series, which I enjoyed. I'm always interested in learning more about the worlds that authors create and Shearin has explores some new groups to the series, like harpies and gorgons. They're not terribly different from what you might expect but I particularly enjoyed her take on gorgons, which was neat. Shearin has a talent for taking existing ideas/beings and giving them a unique twist -- remember the grendels from THE GRENDEL AFFAIR? -- and I think she's done it again with the gorgons. I won't say too much to avoid potentially spoiling things for you but I will say that the SPI Files are a series to watch if you're looking for strong examples of world building.

We also get some nice insights into some less explored characters, like Rake Danescu. In many ways, THE DRAGON CONSPIRACY is Rake's chance to shine, which I enjoyed quite a lot, even though he's not exactly a good guy. Shearin is a master at writing bad guys shaded in grey, with just enough of a sexy rascal in them to make you root for them. (Tam fans, anyone?) She really gets to play with Rake this time around and his scenes are some of the best in the book. Of course, there are cracking scenes with Makenna since she always manages to get herself into awkward situations, especially when Ian's around. They give us some of the laugh-out-loud humour I expect from Shearin's writing -- and THE DRAGON CONSPIRACY does not disappoint. Other characters also have their moments to shine, which was very satisfying.

THE DRAGON CONSPIRACY contains all of Shearin's trademarks: witty dialogue, a winning protagonist, and a plot that doesn't quit. I can't recommend Shearin's work enough so I hope I've inspired you to give the SPI Files a try!

The Grendel Affair tour: Interview with Lisa Shearin + giveaway

Today is an awesome day because I get to share my interview with Lisa Shearin! She's one of my favourite authors; I think she's just a brilliant writer. You may know her from her comedic fantasy series about Raine Benares but Lisa has just launched a new urban fantasy series called The SPI Files with THE GRENDEL AFFAIR.

 ---------------------

Hi, Lisa, and welcome back to Tynga's Reviews! We're delighted to have you back on the blog. Last time you were here, we chatted about ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE, the last book in the Raine Benares/Saghred storyline. I have to tell you that I adored it even though I'm not ready to say goodbye to the characters yet. (I miss Tam.)

Now that the fangirl squeeing is done, can you give us a quick primer on the world of the SPI Files?

The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin (SPI Files #1)It’s a world where creatures from myth and legend are real—and SPI (Supernatural Protection & Investigations) was founded to keep humans from finding out. Because if they did, to paraphrase Jack Nicholson, people can’t handle the truth. So it boils down to this:

That really ugly guy you flipped off on the Queensboro Bridge this morning? Icelandic troll. And for a troll, a middle finger is a lot more insulting than you ever thought it was.  It was nothing short of a miracle he didn’t get out of his truck and flip you and your Beemer into the East River.

Convinced that politicians can’t possibly come from the same world as the rest of us?  Quite often, you’d be right.

That red-haired vice president in corporate who looks too good to be true?  Irish sidhe.

Such creatures have always lived among us, but only in the last few decades have humans become irresistibly interesting to them—and beings previously known only in the fantasy section of a bookstore have become a very real problem for us.

The first book in the series, THE GRENDEL AFFAIR, has just been released. Can you tell us a bit about it?

The core of the story is the agents of SPI—and newbie agent Makenna Fraser—have to stop a supernatural criminal mastermind from turning grendels (yes, those things from Beowulf) loose in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, not only potentially killing thousands of people, but showing the world, live and in-living-color proof that monsters are real.

How does it feel to start an urban fantasy series after spending so much time in Raine's world? Were there any challenges?

None at all in terms of switching from Raine’s world to ours. My Raine Benares books are basically modern urban fantasy in a traditional fantasy setting. Yes, there are elves and goblins, but they talk like us, not like Legolas.

What inspired your shift from more high fantasy to urban fantasy?

I was pretty much writing urban fantasy anyway, but I wanted to use modern technology, real-world settings, pop culture references, etc. with things that go bump in the night—and work in the office with you during the day.

From the title of your latest release, it's clear that the Grendel myth is front and centre. Why Grendel? What was so appealing about this myth?

Well, being an English major and a Viking history buff (and Renaissance and Medieval), it was a given that one day, Grendel would cross my path. And the question of what would happen if Grendel were turned loose in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, and what would it take to stop him, was just too much fun to resist.

You've put your own spin on so many supernatural beings with the Raine Benares books and THE GRENDEL AFFAIR. Are there any characters in the genre that you wish you'd created?

All Spell Breaks Loose by Lisa Shearin (Raine Benares #6)Ilona & Gordon Andrews’ vampires in their Kate Daniels series are simply creepy cool. And who doesn’t love the Leandros brothers in Rob Thurman’s Cal Leandros books. Then there’s Harry Dresden. Nothing much more needs to be said except—all hail Harry!

There are so many amazing urban fantasy series out right now. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors on how to make their books stand out?

Be yourself and find your own, unique voice. When I first started writing, I tried to copy my favorite authors. It’s fine to learn from reading the writing of others; in fact, that’s one of the best ways to learn. However, when it comes to writing your own stories with your own characters, you need to be true to your own unique voice. Once I found my voice, the stories kept coming—and so did the book contracts. ; )

What's next for you?

Well, you said at the beginning of the interview that you miss Tam. I miss Tam, too. So . . . my next project after I finish writing the second SPI Files book (The Dragon Conspiracy) will be to write an e-novella about what happened when Raine met Tam. It’s alluded to in Magic Lost, Trouble Found, but never expanded on. And I know you’ll love that since the action happens pre-Mychael, that anything goes. ; ) I plan to have it out this year.

Thank you for taking the time to visit us again!

Thank you for inviting me, Jenn—it’s always fun!

Here's the scoop on THE GRENDEL AFFAIR:

The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin (SPI Files #1)We’re Supernatural Protection & Investigations, known as SPI. Things that go bump in the night, the monsters you thought didn’t exist? We battle them and keep you safe. But some supernatural baddies are just too big to contain, even for us….

When I moved to New York to become a world famous journalist, I never imagined that snagging a job at a seedy tabloid would change my career path from trashy reporter to undercover agent. I’m Makenna Fraser, a Seer for SPI. I can see through any disguise, shield, or spell that a paranormal pest can come up with. I track down creatures and my partner, Ian Byrne, takes them out.

Our cases are generally pretty routine, but a sickle-wielding serial killer has been prowling the city’s subway tunnels. And the murderer’s not human. The fiend in question, a descendant of Grendel—yes, that Grendel—shares his ancestor’s hatred of parties, revelry, and drunkards. And with New Year’s Eve in Times Square only two days away, we need to bag him quickly. Because if we don’t find him—and the organization behind him—by midnight, our secret’s out and everyone’s time is up.

The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin

Lisa Shearin is one of my favourite authors so I was beyond thrilled to hear she'd be writing an urban fantasy series after finishing up her comedic fantasy series about Raine Benares and the Saghred. (I dared you to read the first book and reviewed ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE, the last book in the series, on this site.) And sad as I am to see the end -- at least for now -- of the Raine Benares books, I'm over the moon with the urban fantasy debut Shearin has delivered in THE GRENDEL AFFAIR. THE GRENDEL AFFAIR has everything I adore about Shearin's writing -- wit, action, romance, twists -- transplanted to an alternate New York in which creatures of legend are real but not out in the open, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the SPI (Supernatural Protection & Investigations), a covert force for good that fights the baddies and their bosses. There are other series out there with similar frames but THE GRENDEL AFFAIR will delight readers with its smart plot, brilliant humour, and fresh take on legendary and mythological beings.

Shearin creates amazing characters and she has populated the SPI Files world with an interesting cadre of heroes. Our narrator is the most intrepid Makenna Fraser, a small town girl with the ability to see through any veil, shield, spell, or ward. As a seer, Makenna is a hot commodity -- there aren't many in the world and Makenna is quite the talent.  She's also incredibly unseasoned when it comes to all the other aspects of life as an SPI agent, which leaves room for a lot of comedic moments. Her inexperience as an agent is a nice balance for her exceptional supernatural abilities and you'll find yourself rooting for Makenna from page 1. Makenna is partnered with Ian Byrne, agent extraordinaire. He joined SPI after his partner on the NYPD was murdered by ghouls and he has major skills. And a rockin' body that Mac can't help but notice. The other characters in the novel are equally interesting. Mac's boss is literally a dragon lady. Her coworkers come from all walks of life and species, like a techie who happens to be a Japanese elf, a sly Russian werewolf, and a vampire lawyer, to say nothing of commando ghouls, goblins, mystery foes, and, well, grendels, as the title suggests.

The worldbuilding in THE GRENDEL AFFAIR is also fantastic, in both the literal and descriptive senses. The may be vampires, dragons, goblins, elves, and werewolves in the SPI Files but they're not run of the mill. Shearin puts her own twist on a lot of the species/creatures, though they are still rooted in traditional legends. I don't want give it all away because some of the reveals come later in the novel but I can say that fans can expect Shearin's trademark ingenuity with her worldbuilding. You can say the same about the plot! For readers who haven't tried this author before, I can say: (1) For shame! Get thee to a bookstore and invest in either THE GRENDEL AFFAIR or MAGIC LOST, TROUBLE FOUND; and (2) you're in for a real treat when you give Shearin a try. She won't disappoint!

If you're looking for a book with wit, clever plotting, laugh out loud moments, and style that can't be beat, you must read THE GRENDEL AFFAIR. Shearin's an amazing writer and her urban fantasy debut kickstarts what is sure to be a wonderful new series!

Interview with Lisa Shearin + giveaway!

Lisa ShearinI’m thrilled to welcome the talented Lisa Shearin to the blog today. I am a huge fan of Lisa's Raine Benares books. They're filled with action, humour, and adventure and I'd recommend them to just about anyone who loves smart fantasy novels. Lisa is joining us today to talk about the newest Raine Benares book, ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE, which was released last week. It's the sixth book in the series and the final book in the Saghred storyline and it's awesome.

Read on to get to know Lisa and to learn all about ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE. Plus, you'll have a chance to win a copy of ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE from Penguin!

---------------------------------

Hi, Lisa, and welcome to Tynga's Reviews! To start, could you tell us a little bit about Raine Benares and the world she lives in?

Raine Benares is a seeker, which is basically a detective who uses magic to find missing people and stolen objects. Raine Benares is the kind of friend you’d want to have. She’s unwaveringly loyal to her friends, unpretentious, tough yet vulnerable, sassy and irreverent, and as long as you’re anywhere near her you’ll never have a dull moment.

I based the island city of Mermeia on Venice. It’s just so cool and gorgeous and mysterious. Hmmm, that sounds a lot like Tam, too, doesn’t it? ; ) I wanted to start the series with a location that readers could anchor themselves in, to make the book more easily visualized, and the action more real.

If I understand correctly, ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE is the final book in the Saghred storyline but not necessarily the series. How does it feel to finally share the end of this storyline with readers?

The sixth book of the Raine Benares series—ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE—is the culmination of a storyline that began in 2007 with Magic Lost, Trouble Found. The action contained in those six books cover a mere three-month period in the lives of Raine and her friends. Three months. It’s hard to believe. When I look back over the entire series, I think one of the biggest surprises for me was that the Saghred storyline extended into six books. I had expected three books max. But the characters kept growing, and they and their stories took on a life of their own. There was no way I could stop after only three books. I had to find out what happened.

Writing the end of ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE was made a lot easier by the fact that the series isn’t really over, just the Saghred storyline. If I’d been truly ending the series, I’d have probably been blubbering like a baby. I absolutely love these characters, I’ve been with them a long time, and I couldn’t bear the thought of never writing another book with them again.

Do you have a favourite or standout scene in the series? It's hard for me to choose because your characters have had so many wonderful moments and lines so I apologize if this question is something of a Sophie's Choice.

It is very hard to choose, rather like picking a favorite child. I think I enjoy the action or fight scenes the most. It’s always a challenge to me as a writer to find a way that Raine and the other characters can extract themselves from a dangerous situation using their wits, rather than either magic or a convenient solution. I like to make them—and me—work for it.

This series has a lovely balance of action, drama, and humour. In fact, one of the things I love most about the series is how quick Raine can be, with her words and her weapons. How did you decide to go with a lighter tone?

Lisa Shearin quote It just came naturally to me—eventually. When I first started writing books, way back in college, I was writing in third person and trying to be quasi serious. Needless to say, these books bored even me. I was trying to write like some of my favorite authors at the time: David Eddings, Raymond Feist, and Terry Brooks. There was humor in what I was trying to write, but writing in third person somehow felt like I was distancing myself from my characters. The day I decided to try first person was like the lights came on in my head. I immediately found Raine’s voice, so writing this series in first person from her point of view just felt right. I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way.

On a more personal note, what do Raine and this series mean to you?

With each book, I feel like I’ve grown as a writer. Writing this series has been like going through author boot camp. It’s been difficult, but intensely satisfying. It’s allowed me to prove to myself that I can finish not only a book, but a series.

What are three things about you that might surprise your fans?

  1. I’m an ordained deacon at my church.
  2. I’d love to take voice lessons one of these days. My voice is decent, but I’d like to see if I could make it better.
  3. I’ve also always wanted to take horseback riding lessons—and one of these days soon, I will.

Is there anything you can tell us about future projects?

I’m working on a proposal package for a new urban fantasy/thriller/comedy series. I can’t wait until I can share details with everyone, but I have to sell it first. ; ) Then I’d like to dive into a spin-off from the Raine books. There’s a possibility of a book (or maybe even a series) with quite a few of the supporting characters. I’d actually like to do all of them eventually. Of course, there’s Tam now that he’s back in the seething politics at the goblin court. And it’d be fun to follow Phaelan on a couple of his adventures. And then there’s the new young cadets coming into the Guardians, now that girls can train to become Guardians, and there will also be goblins coming from Regor. The possibilities are endless with any of those spinoffs.

Finally, what's the one thing you'd like readers to take away from the Raine Benares books?

Fun. I think my job as a writer is to entertain. If you want to be depressed, you can watch the news. My goal is to write books that will take readers away for a few hours, make them laugh, and reunite them with characters that I hope have become like old friends.

A huge thank you, Lisa, for spending time with us! It's been an absolute pleasure chatting with you!

Here’s the scoop on ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE:

Lisa Shearin All Spell Breaks LooseFrom national bestselling author Lisa Shearin comes a new chapter in "one of the best fantasy series currently on the market." (Night Owl Reviews)

My name is Raine Benares—and it sucks to be me right now.

I’m a seeker who found the Saghred, a soul-stealing stone that gave me unlimited powers I never wanted. Now I’ve lost the rock—and the magic it gave me—to a goblin dark mage whose main goals are my death and world domination. This is more than incentive enough for a little trip to the goblin capital of Regor with a small band of good friends, not-so-good friends, and one outright enemy. Don’t ask.

All we need to do is destroy the Saghred, kill the mage, and put a renegade goblin prince on the throne. Did I mention I’ll be doing that with no magic?

From national bestselling author Lisa Shearin comes a new chapter in "one of the best fantasy series currently on the market." (Night Owl Reviews)

All we need to do is destroy the Saghred, kill the mage, and put a renegade goblin prince on the throne. Did I mention I’ll be doing that with no magic?

I first mentioned my love of Lisa Shearin and the Raine Benares books back in February when I dared you to read MAGIC LOST, TROUBLE FOUND, the first instalment in the series. This time around, I'm talking about ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE, the sixth and final book in the Saghred storyline. It's a bittersweet book for me because I adore the world that Lisa Shearin has created and don't want say goodbye to these characters (even temporarily!) but, at the same time, it's exciting to finally reach the climax of the Saghred story and to have all of the promise and buildup of previous novels fulfilled. And fulfilled they most definitely are! I read ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE in a single night because I was hooked from page one and couldn't bear to put it down, despite needing to wake up *very* early the next morning. And I've read it again since then because it's just so delicious.

The Raine Benares series has always had a lot of action and Lisa Shearin really puts the proverbial pedal to the metal in ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE. From the first chapter, you're steeped in action as Raine and company embark on their mission. There are some quiet moments in the book but it's essentially all action and adventure (with some sneaking!), which is fitting given that they are on a quest to destroy a soul-stealing rock with a mind of its own and a crazy goblin demi-god for a buddy. On Raine's side? Some elves, some goblins, a dagger capable of cracking the Saghred open, and a lot of desperate hope. Raine and her team are definitely getting the short stick in this situation but it doesn't stop them from heading to Regor to try to defeat the Saghred and Sarad Nukpana. Lisa Shearin puts her characters in a lot of danger and the tension and stakes are the highest they've ever been, which makes for a satisfying and compelling story.

Many of my favourite characters are featured in ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE and each of them has at least one outstanding moment. I won't describe the scenes for you since it would be very spoilerific but I can assure you that Tam, Mychael, Piaris, Talon, Valerius, and Raine all have scenes where you'll cheer with joy and excitement. There were even a couple moments that elicited excited flailing from me because they were more wonderful and apt than I'd dared to hope for. We're also introduced to an amazing new character -- Kesyn Badru, Tam's first magic teacher. He's one of those endearingly crotchety characters and he adds a lot to the story, both in terms of the main plot and our understanding of Tam, which I loved because I am such a Tam fan. There's also plenty of humour because, well, what's a Raine Benares book without some laugh-out-loud lines? My boyfriend always knows when I'm reading one of these books because I snicker a lot and then read him choice passages when he asks what I'm doing. I was going to share a couple with you but my favourites are later in the book and I really want you to enjoy the book without waiting for a particular line to pop up. I'm confident that you'll know what I'm talking abou when you get there. =)

ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE is a fitting climax to the Saghred storyline and I loved every moment of it. The books are basically six acts in a single story so now's the time to start reading if you haven't already. If you like stories with the perfect blend of action, humour, world building, and character development, you'll love this book and series.

Daring You To Read…Magic Lost, Trouble Found by Lisa Shearin

daringyou

I don’t talk about it very much but I had a deeply rooted love of fantasy novels, especially those that have a strong storyline, a compelling romantic component, and amazing world building. One of my favourite series -- the Raine Benares novels – is written by the amazing Lisa Shearin. There are five books out now (and a sixth coming in mere months) but today I’m daring you to try the first book, Magic Lost, Trouble Found, and not be hooked!

In a world populated by goblins, elves, and magic a-plenty, there’s a lot that can go wrong. Which is great for Raine most of the time, since her magical abilities allow her to find things and this keeps her employed. Of course, she gets in over her head in Magic Lost, Trouble Found, when she ends up linked to the Saghred, a soul-stealing stone that gives her immense power but also wants her to feed it. It’s such a great set-up for the series and I can only praise Lisa for all the twists and turns she’s put into not just Magic Lost, Trouble Found but the whole series.

What really draws me to this book (and series) is the characters. Raine is a fantastic heroine, which I’ve said before. Here’s a quotation from my thoughts on Con & Conjure, the fifth book in the series. Have no fear, there are no spoilers:

Of course, the best part of the book is Raine herself. I love the quippy one-liners and the way she faces her problems. I also adore the fact that she embraces her family’s criminal ways and doesn’t angst about it. Nothing against characters with angst but it’s great that she just goes with it, trying to establish her black sheep status by not engaging in too much illegal activity. Lisa Shearin has given Raine so much dimension and personality that reading these stories is like visiting an old friend.

And Raine is just one of a cast of wonderful characters. You’ll quickly find yourself on either Team Mychael or Team Tam since both of these guys are interested in our plucky heroine. For myself, I’m staunchly Team Tam -- I look forward to hearing who you prefer once you’ve gotten into the series! I’m also a huge fan of Phaelan, Raine’s cousin and pirate extraordinaire. (These are just a few of the colourful characters inhabiting this world.)

If characters aren’t enough to sell you on this series, let me mention the writing. Lisa is a very talented writer. The books are filled with serious moments, smart characters, great action, sweet romance, and some truly comedic scenes. What more do you want from a story?

Here’s the cover copy for Magic Lost, Trouble Found:

Lisa Shearin - Magic Lost, Trouble Found My name is Raine Benares. I'm a seeker. The people who hire me are usually happy when I find things. But some things are better left unfound. I'm a sorceress of moderate powers, from an extended family of smugglers and thieves. With a mix of street smarts and magic spells, I can usually take care of myself. But when my friend Quentin, a not-quite-reformed thief, steals an amulet from the home of a powerful necromancer, I find myself wrapped up in more trouble than I care for. I like attention as much as the next girl, but having an army of militant goblins hunting me down is not my idea of a good time. The amulet they're after holds limitless power, derived from an ancient, soul-stealing stone. And when I take possession of the item, it takes possession of me. Now my moderate powers are increasing beyond anything I can imagine-but is the résumé enhancement worth my soul?
