Daring You To Read…Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh

daringyou

This week, I’m daring you all to read Nalini Singh’s Psy~Changeling series, starting with Slave to Sensation, the first book, which came out in September 2006. Nalini’s one of my favourite paranormal romance authors and she jumped onto my must-buy list when I discovered Slave to Sensation a few years ago.

(Side note: Tynga has reviewed books in Nalini’s Guild Hunter series, which I also love. If you want to hear about Nalini’s awesomeness, you can check Tynga’s posts out: review of Angels’ Blood, review of Archangel’s Kiss, and review of Archangel’s Consort. Many of the strengths Tynga points out are present in the Psy~Changeling series.)

In the Psy~Changeling series, there are three types of people: the Psy, a race of psychics who have eradicated emotion from their lives, the Changelings, who are shapeshifters, and humans. The Psy would like nothing more than to rule the world and the Changelings just want to live their lives free of danger, which, to them, means keeping the Psy in their place.

Set in the San Fransisco area, Slave to Sensation is a hot and steamy love story between Sascha, a Psy who does feel, and Lucas, the leader of one of the local Changeling packs. Their chemistry is electric, Sascha’s exploration of her emotions and the inherent dangers of this pursuit is compelling, and the world building is fantastic. And even though there’s a lot of sexual tension and sexy moments, it’s not chapter after chapter of bedroom antics, which makes me happy.

The tenth book in the series is out now (my paperback should arrive soon *squee*) and I still can’t get enough of this world and the fantastic characters that inhabit it. (There are different romantic pairs in each book, though characters are present throughout the series, which I particularly like since it lets me see what happens after the HEA that is part and parcel of paranormal romance.)

Here’s the scoop of Slave to Sensation:

Dive into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind—and none of the heart…

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”— the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was….

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy co-existence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

If you need a little bit more incentive, you should read the excerpt on Nalini’s website, which contains the prologue and the first two chapters of the novel.

Born and raised in the Toronto area, Jenn moved to St. John's, Newfoundland, eight years ago for school. She's still in school (thankfully on another degree!), now trapped in her dissertation. When she's not dissertating, which happens more often than it should, Jenn spends her time reading, watching movies, playing volleyball, travelling, and enjoying the local music scene. Her latest addictions: yoga and Almond Crunch cereal.
