Fan Art: Taken by the Others

I don’t know if you’ve seen the cover reveal for Taken by the Others by Jess Haines yet, but there is a bit of, I’ll say controversy for lack of better word, around it. The general feeling is that it doesn’t meet reader’s expectations, so I decided to created my own cover, while keeping the general feel of the original one, here’s what it looks like! (left one is original, right one is mine)

I would like to have your thoughts! Also while the cover isn’t very attractive, the first book in the series Hunted by the Others was really good (you can read my review here). So I really hope the cover won’t stop you from purchasing the book, because you’d be missing on something great =)

Your thoughts?

  1. Image wise I like your cover better, I would definitely choose it over the actual cover but I prefer the text in the actual cover. Perhaps if you used shadow our outer glow instead of emboss it would probably look better.

  2. The original cover looks like Patrick Swayze in To Wong Fu. Yikes.

  3. Personally i prefer your cover, its just more appealing and even the text seems to jump out and grab your attention more than the other cover.

  4. Are you a graphic designer? I like your version much better than the pros. It's only missing an element of danger...she just needs a gun in her hand.

  6. Well, you are certainly putting theirs to shame. I've gotta figure that the publisher is going to revamp that cover. It's received far too much negative attention. It reminds me of one of those cheapie scifi covers from an 80s pulp paperback.

  7. Oh my god, she does kind of look like Patrick Swayze! Yours is way better. And at least you thought to put some clothes on her.

  8. I love your cover! I hoping that the publisher will realize that not many people are liking the cover and they'll change it.

  9. heehee, Patrick Swayze. Your cover looks like the girl from the Dark Angel TV series. Much better! I agree with the person who said the font on the first one is pretty cool looking.

  12. Thank you so much, Tynga, I love it!! Did you catch the inside cover snippet I posted on my blog? Hopefully that will dispel any worries anyone has about what's behind the cover. :P

  13. Wow, your cover looks alot better than the original. If I hadn't read the first one I wouldn't pick up that book to read it at all.

As much as the saying goes 'Don't judge a book by its cover' these days I think a cover is just as important as the story if not more. You need a good cover to sell the book.
