I'm very excited about today's guest because it's none other than Kalayna Price. I love her Alex Craft novels and I can't wait to read the third book in the series, GRAVE MEMORY, which *finally* comes out next week. (Can you tell I've been waiting for it rather impatiently? ;)
To celebrate her upcoming release, Kalayna has stopped by to share what she does when she's not writing. She's also offering a giveaway of the first two Alex Craft novels so make sure you enter. They are must-read urban fantasy.
What do I do when I’m not writing? That’s called sleep I think . . .
No I’m kidding. I actually have a lot of hobbies. Maybe too many.
Reading is probably at the top of the list because books and the amazing worlds they unlock are the reason I started writing in the first place. (Big surprise, right?) So I read. A lot. In fact, the head minion said we’re not allowed to move again because he doesn’t want to help move all the books again. Here you can see one wall of books in my library.
I’m also a hoop dancer. I got into hoop dancing years ago after seeing someone dance at a convention. It’s something I can do with friends and it’s good for me—hey, I have to work off all that time spent in a chair in front of my computer! I hoop with LED hoops mostly, but on occasion I get a chance to hoop with fire and I love it. What a rush!
And speaking of a rush. I recently added skydiving to my list of things I’ve done. I don’t know if I’d call it a hobby, but I do plan to do it again!
I also make jewelry, garden, paint, and play video games. (Skyrim anyone?) I dabble in photography and I recently started learning violin. See what I mean about too many hobbies? Of course, none of these hobbies get as much energy devoted to them as in the past, so I tend to focus on them in waves.
Since writing takes up so much of my life, I also collect art and random cute (or terrifying) objects to surround my desk. That way, I always have something interesting and inspiring to focus on when I look up from my screen.

Your hoop dancing is amazing, Kalayna! What a fantastic hobby. Also, yay for Skyrim! Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. =)

Here's the scoop on GRAVE MEMORY, coming out on July 3:
When the dead need to talk, Alex Craft is always ready to listen…
As a Grave Witch, Alex solves murders by raising the dead—an ability that comes at a cost, and after her last few cases, that cost is compounding. But her magic isn’t the only thing causing havoc in her life. While she’s always been on friendly terms with Death himself, things have recently become a whole lot more close and personal. Then there’s her sometime partner, agent Falin Andrews, who is under the glamour of the Winter Queen. To top everything off, her best friend has been forever changed by her time spent captive in Faerie.
But the personal takes a backseat to the professional when a mysterious suicide occurs in Nekros City and Alex is hired to investigate. The shade she raises has no memory of the days leading up to his brutal ending, so despite the very public apparent suicide, this is murder. But what kind of magic can overcome the human will to survive? And why does the shade lack the memory of his death? Searching for the answer might mean Alex won’t have a life to remember at all…

Kalayna's hoop dancing video is amazing! The girl's got skills that's for sure. Love the wall of books, glad to see that it's not just us book bloggers who hoard them. I've been counting down the days until Grave Memory comes out, it's almost here! Now to decide whether I should read it or listen to it... Very entertaining post, thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat would I take? Um...haha, I have no idea! :P Anyway, I loved the post.(:
ReplyDeleteThe dragon could start my fires for food and warmth. Definitely a must when you go camping! I gotta have my smores when I go!!
ReplyDeleteDefinately for fires and protection---maybe a late night fly through the sky??
ReplyDeleteI love kaylana's books :) She sure can weave a world that i would love to live in ....
To keep away the bears and mountain lions! And to fly me out of there when I get sick of nature. :P
ReplyDeleteHe would be a great protector and could build the camp fire. He also can fly us to different places.
ReplyDeleteHe would be a great heater in the cold nights and start he fires and keep us all safe from the wild animals that hunt the woods.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I think I'd take the dragon for warmth and protection.
ReplyDeleteThe dragon could start my campfire and keep me safe.
ReplyDeleteTo start the camp fire!
ReplyDeleteNaturally, to start the campfire! And to get whatever meat we're eating cooking faster!! Also I am sure he would keep away the killer bears and wolves and other creatures that might think of coming our way!
ReplyDeleteA dragon shifter camping would make you feel all warm and cozy, no one is going to mess with you in the middle of the night, not even a bear. :D
ReplyDeleteI actually have zero desire to go camping, but if I did, a dragon-shifter would be perfect to take because the fire would never go out, I'm pretty sure I'd be safe and he could fly us out of the woods whenever we were ready to leave!
ReplyDeleteI'd be able to sleep at night (assuming he didn't mind guarding me while I was conked out) and, as everyone's been saying, no problem starting a campfire.
ReplyDeleteTo protect me from being eaten by animals (hopefully s/he won't eat me).

Kalayna has awesome hoop dancing skills! :)
For protection and warmth. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteThese books look awesome! Thank you for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI am now looking up hoop dancing classes 'cause it looks like a lot of fun! The combination of the paranormal and the mystery elements in this series really appeals to me. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteWow, it sounds like so many great hobbies. Hoop dancing looks like so much fun and it's good for you to boot.
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice to have a bunch of different hobbies to choose from if you want to distract yourself. I'm in awe of the fact that you tried skydiving - that's something I always wanted to try, but haven't gotten around to yet.
ReplyDeleteThe hoop vid is AMAZING (loved the music too - made a note to pick up that tune!) That's one of the most novel exercises I've ever seen for keeping in shape -- and as a writer, I empathize with the struggle to get enough movement into my day. Very beautiful and graceful! Thanks for sharing that with us. :)
ReplyDeleteWOW you are crafy! I have tried and tried to do those kinds of things and they turn out terrible. I am just to uncoordinated. I cant even draw a straight line with a ruler. Good thing my daughters did not get that trait...they are very creative!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, your books sound terrific!
One can never have too many hobbies. Oh and I would try the hoop dancing, but not the sky diving. I mean my fear is FALLING from a great height... so uh... no. LOL
ReplyDeleteOhhhh... these look fantastic! I can not believe I haven't read them yet! Definitely putting on my to read super soon list! And the covers... whew!
ReplyDeleteAhhh... violin. I'd love, love, love to pick that up! :D
The book sounds good. You have a lot of fun hobbies.

ReplyDeleteI really like the second cover. The green shirt(?) is pretty cool. I must say though that you have a very pretty name. I have never heard of the name Kalayna. Thanks for the giveaway! :D
ReplyDeleteI want Skyrim so so much! Just can't quite justify getting in my budget yet...maybe at the end of summer.
ReplyDeleteThese have been on my reading list for a while and I think I just moved them up my list after reading about Kalayna and her cool hobbies!
ReplyDeleteI really love these cover. Thanks for the giveaway.
