PSC: Interview & Giveaway with Veronica Wolff

PSCbig

Today’s PSC guest is Veronica Wolff. She has written books in many different genres, including contemporary romance, historical romance and time travelling romance. However, today she’s here to promote her YA paranormal series called The Watchers. The third book of this series, BLOOD FEVER, will be released tomorrow and to celebrate, she has been kind enough to offer a copy of this newest book, for giveaway. Veronica has also agreed to answer a few questions, to let everyone know a little bit more about her YA series. Welcome Veronica!

-------------------------

Many YA authors choose to write about vampires, so what do you think makes your vampires standout from all the others out there? Tell us a little bit more about your vampires.

My vampires are more snarl than sparkle, for sure. On the surface, they’ve brought teens to the island in order to train them as protectors (the girls) or fellow vampires (the guys), but their true motives and history will only be revealed over time.

Many are attractive, and some are even darkly sexy, but by and large they are vicious and terrifying and wouldn’t make good boyfriend material…at all. Of course, rules are made to be broken, and in BLOOD FEVER, our heroine, Drew, breaks that boyfriend rule big time.

Drew is the perfect main character for a YA book with her intellect, her strong character and her smart aleck comments. Is her character based on someone you know?

Thanks! Honestly, I don’t know where Drew came from. As a teen, I felt like the nerdy, self-conscious, out-of-place girl—and also happened to proclaim Emma Peel of The Avengers as my personal hero—so who knows? Maybe I’ve got a bit of Drew deep down.

What made you choose an island in the North Sea as the setting of your series?

That part of the world is one of my absolute favorites. My early books were set in old Scotland, and for research I’ve traveled throughout the Highlands and Islands. Visiting one historical site in Orkney, we were warned not to get too close to the edge because people have been blown off by the gale-force winds. Grey skies, roiling seas, howling winds…I love every bit of it.

How many books, in total, have you planned for this series?

Many! There’s not an exact number, but I feel like I could write them for a while. Book four is written, and I’m currently plotting out numbers five through seven, and that still doesn’t put me at the end. Just think of all the missions Drew can go on! All the vampires there are to meet!

Even if money wasn’t an an issue, Drew seems like the type of girl that would take summer classes instead of going to summer camp. Personally, what would you choose?

I never had that option myself, so it’s hard to say. I’ve got school-age kids now, and honestly, I kind of envy the traditional “sleepaway” camp they got to try this summer! That said, I’m a geeky city girl at heart, and I think fifteen-year old me would’ve preferred a summer of reading and rock music to ziplining.

What is your favorite summer camp or summer treat?

I live in San Francisco, which means I spend most of my summer months in the fog, wearing my winter coat. (See my answer about the North Sea, though, and you’ll know I love it!) But our cold Julys also mean I like to get away in the summer, visiting family in places where I can actually wear a swimsuit.

Oh, and Fudgsicles. I love Fudgsicles.

Thank you Veronica for stopping by our summer event and for the great interview!

Thanks for having me, and for the awesome questions!

More about BLOOD FEVER, which will be released tomorrow, August 7th, 2012:

veronica wolff - blood feverIt’s the start of the fall semester, and a new crop of Acari and Trainees has descended on the Isle of Night. Watcher training has intensified, and Drew has a new roommate named Mei-Ling. But Mei-Ling harbors a dangerous secret that drove the vampires to abduct her against her will. Drew knows she shouldn’t get involved, but she can’t seem to leave her roommate to fend for herself.

Luckily, Drew has other things on her mind—like vampire Carden. A blood bond to a brawny, eighteenth-century Scottish bad boy tends to preoccupy a girl. And though she’s still figuring out what this bond means, one thing has become clear: She craves him in a major way.

But then bodies start turning up on the island. All the evidence points to the existence of a rogue vampire, and the sinister vampire Alcántara is gunning for Carden, even though Drew has proof that Carden had nothing to do with the murders. Now she has to find the true killer—without endangering Carden, Mei-Ling, or herself…

  3. Ooh I love this series!

I've always loved vampires! I guess because my first vamp was a dark and moody guy, bent on killing a girl but ended up falling in love with her!

It was Aubrey in Demon in My View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes!

I LOVE that this is dark. I love the setting. Always wanted to go to northern Scotland. SO jealous. I think the setting alone is what is drawing me to read this!

  10. Thanks for a fun post!!! I like vampires... as long as they don't sparkle ;) I think that I really like YA vampirs b/c you get all of the scare w/out some of the excessive gore/scariness... but they are still scary :)

  11. Thanks for the giveawa! I like YA vampires because you generally get a more emotional side. You get many different takes on the vampire lores and history, and many of them are without the gore some with. I guess you tend to get a nice vampire who can still scare the crap out of you lol.

I am an avid vampire fan Ive read adult for a long time and only recently started reading YA but I love the YA genre .I find that some of todays adult romances are just too much when it comes to details and love scenes I much prefer the ya books in that sense more story more emotions they are great.

  26. Honestly, I prefer adult vampire books to YA paranormal because the adult versions tend to have darker, scarier vampires as opposed to the merely misunderstood. That's why I like this series--it's aimed at a younger audience but the vampires aren't exactly rainbows and sunshines. It's more like Battle Royale....with vampires!
