FF–Jocelynn Drake’s Mira retells the Red Riding Hood

** Today on Dark Faerie Tales an interview with Devon Monk and a Dead Iron giveaway!

RRHfinalsmall_thumb3_thumb

Jocelynn Drake’s Mira is hot as fire, has a sharp tongue and a very strong will, let’s see how she pictures the Red Riding Hood!

Mira Retells Little Red Riding Hood
By Mira (with help from Jocelynn Drake)

There once was a sexy flame-haired vampire by the name of Mira who liked to dress all in red leather.  One evening, her pseudo-father and sire Jabari beckoned her forward, holding out a basket containing two wine bottles filled with fresh blood.

“Here, Mira, take these to your other sire and mother, Sadira.  She’s been horribly wounded by a vampire hunter and is too weak to seek out her prey.  Take her this blood so that she may heal,” Jabari said.

Not so innocent Red Ridinghood ;) … leather underbust corset by Steampunk CoutureMira merely quirked one eyebrow at this command, but wisely kept her comments to herself as she donned her matching red velvet cloak.  While she had no desire to see old Sadira heal, she knew better than to deny her father any request, so Mira set off through the woods with the red hooded cloak and basket of blood.

As Mira walked along the well-worn path weaving through the woods, she was soon halted by the wicked Nicolai.  Leaning against an old oak tree, the golden-haired werewolf flashed her a wide white grin and crooked a finger to beckon her over.  Amber eyes glinting in the moonlight that glowed in the sky, Nicolai drew in a deep breath, catching the scent of the blood in the basket.  But Mira was truly the tasty morsel that tempted him.

“Where are you off to, Little Red Riding Hood?” Nicolai growled, his deep voice a rumble in his chest.

“On a mercy mission to old Sadira,” Mira replied with a frown.

Nicolai grabbed her free hand and spun her around so that she was pinned against the tree, his hands braced on either side of her head.  His large body dwarfed hers, but Mira was not afraid of the big bad wolf as she eyed his wide chest and gold-spun locks.

“I say you take the blood for yourself and we go have some fun,” Nicolai suggested as he nuzzled her neck.

Mira was sorely tempted to follow the werewolf’s suggestion, but she shook her head.  “Jabari would discover I didn’t follow his orders and have me beheaded.”  Mira gently pushed against his chest, getting him to take a step backwards.  “I have to go.”

Slipping around the wicked werewolf, Mira continued down the worn path.  Nicolai wasn’t willing to give up his prey so easily, particularly when he knew Mira held no love for her old mother.  So the wolf hurried through the woods to Sadira’s castle hidden in a thick grove of trees.  Sneaking into her castle, Nicolai slayed the weakened vampire and cut off her head.  Placing her head on the end of tall poster at the foot of the bed, Nicolai sprawled out in the bed and waited for Mira to arrive.

Little Red Riding Hood entered the crumbling old castle and climbed up to the tallest tower to Sadira’s bedroom.  She started at the sight of her mother’s head dripping blood down the tall bed poster, her eyes starting blindly out at oblivion.  Mira then caught sight of Nicolai stretched out in the bed, looking quite pleased with himself.   Setting the basket down on the nightstand, Mira propped her hands on her narrow hips and smiled at the werewolf.

“O grandmother, what great eyes you have!” Mira cooed.

“The better to see you with, my dear,” Nicolai murmured, his golden eyes shining in the candlelight.

“O grandmother, what large hands you have!” Mira purred.

Nicolai reached out and grasped Mira by the waist and pulled her in the bed, holding her against his long length.  “The better to hold you with,” he growled.

“O grandmother, what a terrible large mouth you have!” Mira said with a giggle as she tried to control Nicolai’s roaming hands.

“The better to devour you with!”

[HERE WE MUST CENSOR A SECTION OF THE OLD FAIRY TALE SO THAT WE CAN MAINTAIN OUR PG RATING.  NEEDLESS TO SAY, MIRA HAS A DIRTY MIND]
It was later that evening when a vampire hunter by the name of Danaus was passing through the thick grove when he heard a squeal and a shout.  Fearing the old vampire had caught a helpless mortal, he stormed into the castle, intending to cut off her head and free the mortal.  Upon reaching the top of the tallest tower, he threw open the door to find Little Red Riding Hood snuggled under the covers with the Big Bad Wolf.  He smiled to find that old vampire Sadira’s head perched on the top of the bed post.  Nodding to the couple, Danaus backed out of the room and returned to the woods without harming Mira because it was well-known that she never harmed mortals.
And the vampire and werewolf lived the rest of their days and nights together in the old castle, happily ever after.

The End

Jocelynn would like to offer 2 signed copies of Burn the Night, the last book in the Dark Days series, to two lucky winners!

The Great Awakening approaches . . .

After eons in exile, the naturi have broken their chains and now roam the Earth bent on revenge. It is the sworn duty of Mira, the Fire Starter, to protect the nightwalker race—though even she may be powerless to withstand the horrific onslaught. As Mira and her brave lover, the vampire slayer Danaus, stand ready to do battle, thousands of winged shapeshifters darken the skies. The war of ultimate extermination has begun, and the battleground is Mira's home turf.

The humans don't yet recognize the doom descending upon them. And the nightwalkers will surely perish unless they unite with outcast naturi who claim to want peace. But these unexpected "allies" are the same demons who have long worked for Mira's destruction—and in these darkest of days the lines between friend and foe will blur treacherously before the bloody end of all things.

  16. I love this series and Jocelynn's writing. I'm hoping that some day she'll come back to this world. I'm hoping by the way some things were left, that there would be enough for a few books (spinoffs perhaps??). It was bittersweet. Mira was of course AWESOME and it kinda sucked to say goodbye to her and Danaus.

  20. When I love a series it's hard to see it end BUT when the storyteller gives it the HEA it deserves it's OK because there is something new on the horizon, sometimes a spin-off :-)
