With baby #2 on the way, hubby and I started talking baby names and I must confess, character's name are a big inspiration for me! I wanted to talk with you guys and maybe get a little inspiration from you. I know some of you aren't old enough for kids yet, but just play along ^^
When looking for a name for Lily-Ann, we had a lot of discussion and one of the names I liked best was Faythe (from Rachel Vincent's Shifters series) but unfortunately it didn't sound all that great with my husband's family name so we didn't keep it on our list. We also had Joshua in mind (because we were first told it was a boy), and this inspiration wasn't from a book, but from the TV show So You Think You Can Dance. After many month's of thought, we chose Lily-Ann and my inspiration was a little girl called Lilianne I had in day camp when I was a teen.
Choosing a baby's name is such a great responsibility because it will follow them all of their lives, you want it to sound right when they are tiny but also when they grow up. I'm sure authors also feel the same way when naming their characters and they put so much thought into it that it feels like a great inspiration. Especially if, like me, you care so strongly about the characters you like!
Right now, if we have a girl I like the name Emma-Lynn (inspired by Kresley Cole's Emmaline). I changed the spelling to fit Lily-Ann's name (I would like to have a link between their names ^^) but my husband isn't crazy about it unfortunately. If we have a boy, we thought of Jacob (NOT in honor of Twilight, but still), Dimitri (yes, Mr. Belikov himself!) and Noah. I have to say I like Noah best and my inspiration was from The Notebook, my favorite movie EVER!
Now my questions to you are:
- Have you ever liked a character so much that you thought of naming your kid after that character?
- Did you actually name one of your kid after a character?
- Or is there a character's name you like very much (even though you might not like the character all that much) and you'd name your kid like that?
- Do you have any name suggestions for us?

How funny, why I was pregnant this last time, if she would have been a boy, we were going to name her Noah, after the character in The Notebook! LOL I wanted the name Nicholas, after the author, but my husband was too fond of that name. But she turned out to be a girl and we chose a name that goes well with our first daughter's name.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing which name you go with :)
With my kids I didn't even think to name them after characters from books. With my daughter I wanted something slightly gaelic (and then Shrek came out after...) and then she got her great grandmother's names as her middle names. My son... to this day, I maintain that he chose his own name because it popped into my head one night and that was that.
ReplyDeleteConfession...I want to name my son Noah. After Noah from the notebook. And PUSHING THE LIMITS. I also like the name Kai which I got from Malachi in SANCTUM.
ReplyDeleteBooks tend to have a huge impact on my thoughts for baby names, even though my ultimate favorite for a girl is not from a book. I have to say I did enjoy the name Wren from a book I read recently.
If I was a boy I was going to be named Jacob! haha
I love the name Lynn, it runs in my family as a middle name. My sister and many of my aunt's have it.
Now thats funny! Our baby might be a girl according to the US tech but they told me my daughter was a boy during my last pregnancy so I'll wait and see hehe
ReplyDeleteWhat are your kids' names if you dont mind my asking?
ReplyDeleteWhats your ultimate favorite girl name?
ReplyDeleteLynn (spelled Line or Lyne here) is typically a 50 years old woman name, so it's out of question unless it's combined :)
I don't mind at all. :) My daughter is Fionah Fay Gladys (and she gets a lot of Shrek jokes, but I can't be blamed for that!) and my son is Adrian Christopher.
ReplyDeleteI love both names! Adrian as been on my mind a lot, but the French pronunciation doesn't sound as cool as the English one. And because Frenchies have a tendency to massacre 'a' ending names, I stir away from them even though I really love them. Ahh the things we have to consider o.0
ReplyDeleteWhatever we call our kids other kids will find something to tease them. My family name is Bacon, so I've had more than my share LOL
There are a few of us The Notebook fans here :)
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to name my son Jacob, but would never do it with another child due to Twilight. We ended up going with Michael for tradition (daddy and grandpa are both Michael). I'm a big fan of traditional names.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah!
ReplyDeleteI have found a lot of names that I've loved, but I can't seem to remember one at the moment! But yes, characters do provide inspiration for my future kid's names :)
ReplyDeleteIf it's a boy, I'd definitely go for Dimitri because it's not that well known as compared to Noah. That's just me saying.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, characters' names would be awesome to name my future kids. I am thinking along the lines of naming them Faramir, Boromir and all those weird names from Lord of the Rings.
I fell in love with Waverley fom Amy Kathleen Ryan's Glow. Hubby's not into it. We have some non-literature boy names a d are stil loking for girl names. We named our cats after writers!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention I always wanted Isabella but he vetoed it because of Twilight! Grrrr...
ReplyDeleteIts always when we need to remember something that it slips our mind hehe
ReplyDeleteYeah, Noah isn't THAT popular in Quebec though. It didn't make the top 10 most popular names in the last 10 years at least hehe
ReplyDeleteI hear you! Its hard to both agree on a name!
ReplyDeleteSo, my favorite character is Puck, from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series. Now, any future husband I have, I doubt he'd be crazy about naming a future son, Puck. Even still, naming him Robin will be a little hard (and frankly, I'm not crazy about that name). However, I would love to name a child after other favorite characters whose names aren't as strange, I guess. I recently read a series (that I loved) with the main characters name Chrysabelle. It's rare and you could have the nickname's of either 'Belle', 'Chrysa' or even 'Chrissy' - which is kind of cool. But yeah, character names are definitely having a lasting effect on me and when (if) I have kids, they'll be strongly considered.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I really love the name, Noah. I always have, even without characters.
Thanks Jessica! It is good idea :)
