A Christmas With… Linda Robertson

Xmas2_thumb1_thumb

Wicked Circle, the fifth book in the Persephone Alcmedi series, is releasing on December 27th, and to celebrate to occasion, Linda accepted to stop by Tynga’s Reviews and share her Christmas memories with us! =)

---------------------

1- What kind of trouble will Persephone get herself into in Wicked Circle?

Seph’s gonna find herself in a very dangerous situation just to protect Menessos. Let me tell you something else…in this book I’ve expanded the point of view. Persephone’s scenes are still first person, but the story line is broadening and she cannot be on-stage for everything anymore. So, we have a few new third person POV characters and we get into Johnny’s head. I’m very excited about it and the new opportunities.

2- When you first started the series, did you foresee how Persephone would grow as a character?

I knew where I wanted her to start and where I wanted her to end up. I had bullet points for the high points of each book, but the little details that actually show her growth I construct as each book develops, cultivating those moments with more spontaneity. I think that makes it feel more realistic for me, and hopefully, for the readers too. If I’d plotted every detail it would all be too sterile. Being open to the creativity that seeps in as the plot unfolds gives me the option to extract details from the other impulsive points and then weave it all together without feeling like I’m bound to the bullet points.

3- Is Wicked Circle the last book in the series?

No. SHATTERED CIRCLE will be released, tentatively, October of 2012. I’d like to do nine books to complete the story arc I designed, so hopefully I’ll be contracted to write the last three installments. That’s not an final ending point, though. I could keep writing the series beyond book nine, I just haven’t plotted that far.

4- What the nicest thing a fan ever told you?

One fan told me she re-reads my books in order as each new one comes out and usually in between releases, too. I used to re-read my favorite books when I had more time for pleasure reading. Time is precious in our lives. To know that someone thinks my books are worth their time to read in the first place is truly an honor to me; knowing someone thinks they’re worth the time to re-read…wow. That’s a privilege that means more than I can properly articulate.

Now onto some Xmas-y questions:

5- What's a typical Christmas like in the Roberston family?

We have a big dinner on the 24th and the kids get to open one present that I choose—usually pajamas. I make all kinds of sweet confections for the holidays like buckeyes, chocolate dipped pretzels, cut out cookies, choco-pecan-oatmeal scotchies, peppermint bark, etc., because the excitement of what’s to come the next morning wouldn’t be the same without everyone having a major a sugar rush. *laughs* When morning comes I let the kids sort all the presents into piles for each person while I make some coffee. When it’s time to open, the Santa hat comes out. Whoever opens presents has to wear the Santa hat. When one person is done opening all their presents they pass the hat to someone else. It allows me to capture the moments with the camera and wearing that hat makes the pictures more festive.

6- How is it different from when you were a kid?

When I was a kid the unwrapping was a voracious free-for-all; we could’ve made it into an Olympic sport. But it went by too fast and being focused on your own stuff, you didn’t know who else in the family got what and while you were busy checking out what you got, you might miss the reaction of someone who opened your gift for them. Going one-at-a-time makes the opening last longer and everyone gets a little bit of spotlight with their presents. The boys are all hams, so it’s always a joyful and humorous thing to watch them discover what’s under the paper of each gift.

7 - What's your best Christmas memory?

Let me share two with you. My third son was born shortly before the holiday and we brought him home from the hospital on Christmas Eve. I have pictures of him wrapped in a blanket under the tree. Another great memory is of my youngest son, as he was all dressed up and ready to take holiday photos, deciding that he HAD to wear the Darth Vader helmet in the pictures. Both are priceless.

8- What's the best Christmas gift we could offer Persephone?

Arthurian stuff, as in artwork, books, DVDs, shirts, especially John William Waterhouse calendars, mugs, shirts etc.. A self-help book titled “How to Deal with the Crap Your Author Insists on Doing to You” might be nice, too.

Linda not only writes, she also plays the piano and the electric guitar --both six- and seven-string axes.  Back in her high school days, she was the lead guitarist for a cover band that played everything from AC/DC to Metallica, with some Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, and Whitesnake thrown in for good measure.  She's still a fan of all those 80's hair metal rockers.
She’s also the mother of four wild boys, and they have one big dog, a rottie mix named Bela.
She knows more about Star Trek and Star Wars than is socially acceptable, she makes awesome soups and chili, and she thinks the best things in life are: stand-up comedy, really good margaritas, an old pick up truck that will do doughnuts, movie heroes who make loincloths look hot.
