Jennifer Estep is a guest we particularly enjoy having on the blog, and this time around, our Jenn got to interview her about her latest release, Kiss of Frost!
---------------------
1- You put Gwen through a little bit of everything -- danger, discovery, heartbreak -- in TOUCH OF FROST and I loved it! Can we expect more of the same in KISS OF FROST?
JE: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the first book in the series. Yep, there is definitely more of the same in KISS OF FROST.
Basically, Gwen and the other warrior whiz kids at Mythos Academy go to a ski resort for the annual Winter Carnival – only there’s a Reaper of Chaos who’s determined to kill Gwen before the weekend is through. So Gwen has to use her wits and her psychometry magic to figure out who the bad guy is and stop him – before he buries her for good.
2- What made you choose psychometry (getting glimpses of people's memories by touching their things) for Gwen's gift?
JE: I thought it would be a cool power to write about and that I could hopefully have Gwen use it in some interesting ways. Plus, the title TOUCH OF FROST just sort of popped into my head one day, and I thought psychometry magic would be an interesting play on and tie-in with the title. So that’s the power/magic I went with.
3- In TOUCH OF FROST, Gwen's definitely the odd one out at Mythos Academy but I love her individuality (and her superhero T-shirts). Is she more settled in KISS OF FROST?
JE: Gwen is a little more settled in KISS OF FROST. She has some friends in Daphne and Carson now, and, of course, there’s her complicated relationship with Logan. Gwen’s not an insider, but she’s definitely not so alone anymore.
4- Will Gwen be a little more lucky with love this time around?
JE: Well, I can’t give out too many spoilers, but the title is KISS OF FROST. So I’ll leave it at that. LOL.
5- Vic really cracks me up. How did you come up with the idea of a bloodthirsty, talking sword?
JE: I knew I wanted Gwen to have a weapon, and I thought it would be neat to have that weapon be its own character with a distinct personality, if only to show a different point of view than what Gwen has, since everything at Mythos Academy is still relatively new to her. So that’s sort of where Vic came from. I decided to make him so bloodthirsty because, well, he’s a sword. Plus, I thought having Vic be so confident would make him a fun character to write. So far, I’m having a blast with him.
Now onto some Christmas-y questions!
6- What's a typical Christmas like in the Estep's family?
JE: There’s usually food, presents, and just spending some time together. We’re pretty low-key, but I like having a quiet holiday.
7- How is it different from when you were a kid?
JE: I’d say Christmas comes a lot quicker now than it did back then. When I was a kid, it seemed like Christmas would never get here. Now, it always seems like I’m in a rush to get everything done before the holiday.
8- Is there one gift you receive that really stuck to your memory?
JE: Not really as far as Christmas presents go, but my significant other did give me a necklace and a charm shaped like a miniature book when my first book was published. That was one of the nicest, most thoughtful presents I’ve ever gotten.
9- What would a perfect Christmas be like for Gwen?
JE: I think a perfect Christmas for Gwen would be spending some time with her Grandma Frost and the two of them reminiscing about Gwen’s mom, Grace – just remembering how much they loved Grace and realizing how much they care about each other now.
Happy reading and happy holidays, everyone!

If it got you curious, here’s a bit more about Kiss of Frost
Logan Quinn was trying to kill me. My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practically glowed with the thrill of battle...
I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart—the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword..
