A Wolf At Summer Camp

In the summer, where I live in the Pacific Northwest is ‘summer camp.’ We have lakes, mountains, rivers, and golf courses galore…and for a place where winter lasts five months and then it rains for two more months, boy do we have some summer fun when the sun finally appears! But all schools in the area go to a camp in the fall for a week, and Bigfoot is often sighted. Yeah. The real Bigfoot.

The camp is along a river, and I attended it when I was in the fifth grade. We learned about trees, river quality, and native vegetation. And we flirted with the boys. I am sorry to say that I never did see Bigfoot. However, I did come face to face with a wolf.

A real wolf.

Wolves have crazy eyes. I’m not sure if most people understand this because wolves are so beautiful in pictures. Think of the wildest, craziest, dog expression you’ve ever seen…and times that by twelve. I’m not saying he was mean looking or anything…just that when you look into the eyes of a wolf, you see something untamed.

He actually was quite pretty—and I’m assuming he was a ‘he.’ Grey coat with white markings, thick fur, angled face. And he looked right at me.

He didn’t seem hungry. And I wasn’t smart enough to be scared. I had been wandering around on the river rocks looking for insects. It was an assignment, and we had to identify a certain amount. So I moved into the brush…and there he was. We startled each other and just stared for a moment.

Then he yawned.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a wolf yawn. On one hand, the wrinkled nose is really cute. On the other hand, those are seriously sharp canines. Sharp and deadly. He yawned, I giggled, he snorted…and then he just took off.

I write about wolves. Well, I write about wolf shifters – hot Alpha males who shift into wolves. We also have moose, deer, elk, bear, and cougars around here…but my favorite is the wolf. Maybe it’s because for a couple of seconds years ago, I shared a moment with one.

We’re giving away a copy of Hunted for commenters here on the blog. Have you ever seen a wild animal up close? If not, which animal would you like to see?

Rebecca Zanetti has worked as an art curator, Senate aide, lawyer, college professor, and a hearing examiner - only to culminate it all in stories about Alpha males and the women who claim them.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides in the wild north with her husband, children, and extended family who inspire her every day—or at the very least give her plenty of characters to write about.

  2. I am VERY happy to say that I haven't seen any wild animals up close! Well, actually, nothing wilder than a rabbit or a groundhog (they are SOOOO UGLY!!!). I bet Rebecca's mom had a hard attack after hearing this story!

  3. I went to Canada on holiday in 2010, me and my family went on a bear sighting, we saw a black bear family 1 adult and 3 baby cubs, they were so cute and I wish i could do it again

  4. I absolutely love this series and I love a good giveaway. To answer the question, I've seen lots of wild animals up close, deer, alligator, coyotes. But if I were given the option I think I'd rather be face to face with Bigfoot than a wolf lol.

  6. I've never seen anything real scary up close. My son had a black bear lumber across the drive in front of him the other day but I didn't see it. It did leave scratch marks on the tree we had bird food on :).

  7. We went camping in BC a while back and though we were told to look out for bears and take precautions, we never saw any. We did almost walk onto a very big snake camping in Ontario, they are protected and left to roam, and we were scared!

  8. The only animals I have seen close up are the animals at the zoo. We hear wild coyotes all the time in our back yard.

  9. I've seen coyotes, foxes, turkeys, opossums, and coons.

  10. I have never seen a wolf in the wild. There are some in Kentucky (I have been told), along with coyotes, bears, other wild creatures. Luckily, the only ones I have come across are deer and bunnies, and the occasional scavenger (raccoon, opossum, etc.).

  11. That was a great story. I've never been up close with any wild animal, except at the zoo or a wild animal park. Sometimes they have an animal they let you get close to and touch that's being held by an employee of the park.

  12. Great story, thank you! There are no wild animals in Holland like in America, the biggest creature here would be a fox, or a wild boar. Ones I have seen? Squirrel, rabbit, hare, and some smaller birds of prey. No idea about their English names. And deer, we have those, but I have never seen one in the wild.

  13. My dad lives in Colorado and for many years he had a wolf half breed. He was huge and looked just like the grey/silver wolves in the wild but he was the smartest most loyal protective animal I have ever seen. We were his pack. :) Unfortunately after quite a few years he became rally ill and we had to put him down but I will always remember that amazing animal. I also have a habit of running up close and personal with hawks. I had an encounter rather similar to yours with the wolf. I was walking home one early morning I looked up and not 6 ft away was a hawk eating it's prey. We both startled looked each other in the eyes and I swear he thought "oh crap!" before he flew away. lol

  19. I love these books and can't wait to read this one! The only wild animals I've seen up close and personal (outside of the zoo!) are deer, fox, squirrels, skunks and snakes!!

  20. Wolves are beautiful animals. We spent a weekend camping with my sons scout troop near the Lakota wolf preserve. It was quite an experience.

  21. I was lucky enough to go on safari in Africa and we got very close to the animals. Our guide warned as that as long as we stayed in our vehicle, the predators would not see as prey. When you've got a couple of fully grown lions 5 feet from your vehicle, and no fence between you and them, you just hope that the guide is right!

  26. It must have been amazing to see a wolf fairly close without the bars and the glass of zoos. Life in the wild is just so beautiful and amazing.

  30. I have come face to face with many wild animals. That's just what happens when you live out in the country. I've never been scared off them (except for I admit snakes but that's more that they really gross me out). I have been around a coyote, several wolves, and a bear once and then the more obvious racoons, deer, etc. Most recently, I was near a fox who was quite friendly.

  32. I've been camping many times and the closest I've come to seeing an animal up close would be seeing the bears shadow while awake in me and my sisters tent and waiting for it to finish sniffing around the campground, I'd love to get really close to seeing a wolf up close, they are just so interesting and majestic :D

  33. Yep, I've seen a few close up, deer, turkey, alligators and of course cute little bunnies. The books sound awesome, can't wait to read!
