Series: Nightshade #2

Reviewed by: Tynga

Purchase: Amazon | Book Depository US/UK

Source: ARC sent by Andrea Cremer

This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended-Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer-one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack-and the man-she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

Calla wakes up in a very strange place, facing her former worst enemies and isn’t quite sure what to do next. Why do I say former enemies? Because after what Shay and her discovered at the end of Nightshade, everything she’s ever known seems to be all lies. And an alliance with the dreaded Searchers might be the only way to save her pack mates. With Shay, The scion – whatever that means –, Calla will jump head first in a war, facing her old allies. Will she win her battle? Is it even possible to win this war considering all the possible casualties?

Wolfsbane was an amazing read once again and I really liked that it was so different from Nightshade. Calla finds herself on the other side of the mirror, a bit like Alice in Wonderland. Along her side, we will discover the Searchers’ world, their magic, their history, as well as Calla’s true history. The details of the Harrowing, when Guardians and Searchers allied in hopes of freedom. Calla will also have to deal with the consequences of her previous decisions and it won’t be an easy task. Running off will cost her more than she ever imagined, but can she make amends?

The character psychology was really interesting. Calla & Shay’s struggled to uncover the truth and establish the bases of their relationship, not only with each other, but also with their new allies. We also meet some great new characters. Connor was by far my favorite with his wits and multilayered personality. Monroe also follows close behind. I guessed his secret long before it was out, but I still enjoyed the mystery around him.

The action built like a crescendo and even though the story picks up slowly, the tension is simply unbearable by the end. I’m anxious to see what Bloodrose will bring to the table, but with the way Wolfsbane ended, I have really high expectations!

Wolfsbane is a cruel and heart-breaking world wrapped in a pretty and magical package. Its world will leave you breathless and the characters will have you tearing-up. Make sure you buckle-up, because once you start reading, you’re in for quite a ride!

PSB: Guest Post & Giveaway with Andrea Cremer

PSB2

If you’ve been following me for a while you know I LOVE Andrea Creamer and her first book, Nightshade. Now her second book, Wolfsbane, releases only in July but I though inviting her to close the fest with me was a great way to tease ourselves with a taste of what’s to come this summer! Before I give the stage to Andrea, here’s a bit about Nightshade:

Nightshade1

Calla Tor has always know her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding scared sites for the keepers. But when she violate her masters’ by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might loose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Now let’s welcome Andrea!

A frequent question I get is "if there was a movie who would your dream Nightshade cast be"?

It's a super fun game to play and I do have answers. But before I give them, I have a qualifier:

It's really, really important to me that readers envision characters the way they want to. The people I'll mention here are just my ideas - but I love that every person that encounters the Nightshade pack will have their own picks.

Those who follow me on Twitter know that I've had Ren pegged for a long time.

(Ben Barnes)

Shay was eluding me. And how it pained me that I couldn't find anyone who captured the way I'd imagined him!! Then the lovely Mitali (aka AlleyofBooks) introduced me to this guy:

Max Irons.
And he is PERFECT for Shay. *Swoons* I am sooooo happy. Thanks, Mitali!!
So there are the two lovely boys vying for Calla.

As for Calla herself, She was tricky too and I’m still not 100% convinced about this pick. The model they found for the cover was perfect. But in terms of actresses, the closest I've seen of the way I imagine Calla is this photo of Dianna Agron:

And there you have it.

And special treat - A WOLFSBANE excerpt:
Someone else. Now I wasn’t just hearing Ren’s teasing whisper. I could see his face and remember the way he’d pulled me against him the night I’d run from Vail. From the ceremony where I should have become his mate. He’d kissed me, pleaded with me to say. Where was he now? He’d lied to help us escape. I didn’t want to think about the price he’d paid for that lie.

Before you leave us Andrea, What’s your best spring break memory?

My favorite spring break memory happened in my third year of graduate school right after my now-husband I and got engaged we took a trip to Arizona. I found my wedding dress in Tuscon!

Thank you so much Andrea for stopping by! I love your cast and I really can’t wait for Wolfsbane!

Nightshade News!

The paperback edition of Nightshade will release this June, and the art department at Penguin created a new cover:

I really like the concept, especially the fact that Calla human & wolf both share the same eye.

I’m not sure if I prefer it to the original cover, but it sure is beautiful!

In the same concept, Wolfsbane got a new cover as well:

I really like it to, I can’t wait to have my own copy!

It would seem that the first cover they released for the second book won’t be available at all, but Andrea isn’t sure.

What do you guys think?

When I’m not writing… with Andrea Cremer + Giveaway

andrea2 I am really happy to be part of the Nightshade only Tour and feel very honored to have Andrea on Tynga’s Reviews once again. Andrea is really amazing and I’m always very happy to work with her! She is the debut author of an amazing book called Nightshade about some rather original wolves. I LOVED her book and you can read my review here. There is also an amazing campaign around the release, and Shay Doran, character of Nightshade, is your host. Andrea is here today to share with us what she does when She’s not writing…

Work and Play

Like most writers I have a ‘day job,’ and luckily for me the other hat I wear helps with my writing. I’m a history professor at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. My research focuses on the intersection of religion, sex, and violence in the early modern (1500-1800) Transatlantic world. When I built Nightshade’s world I was drawing on years of research and teaching. My students are andreaamazing and I love the discussions we have in class and insightful arguments they make in their essays. This semester I’m on sabbatical – perfect timing because my novel debuts this month! – so I’m revising my academic manuscript while I’m jaunting about the country promoting Nightshade.

When I’m not working I make the most of time spent with my husband and our two dogs. The dogs love to take walks and chase squirrels, but my husband and I favor evenings in another world: the World of Warcraft. That’s right, I’m a gamer girl. I’ve been playing WoW for about three years now and I’d be lying if I claimed I didn’t love it. I’m also addicted to Sid Meier’s Civilization games (Civ 5 just came out – woo hoo!). Aside from World of Warcraft and Civilization I have no other video game vices. While I’m impressed by the graphics of first-person shooter games, like Halo, I can’t touch them. They give me motion sickness.

There are a few television shows I’m devoted to: Mad Men, Glee, Supernatural, and Project  Runway. I’m a big fan of True Blood, but we don’t get HBO so I’m watching the dvds and am therefore a season behind in my viewing. I never tire of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and am the proud owner of all seven seasons, so I can get a Buffy fix any time! Each week I await the release of Felicia Day’s web series, the Guild, and am unnerved by how much I can relate to it (see above: World of Warcraft).

Since my work and hobbies involve a lot of sitting I also try to get to the gym every day. I love running and I do yoga. It’s good that I exercise because eating and drinking red wine are two of my other favorite things!

---------------------

Thank you so much Andrea for taking the time to share with us =)

Rocco had surgery recently, and he is getting better, feel free to leave your get well wishes in a comment!

Now Andrea also wanted to give the chance to one lucky winner to read Nightshade (you will get a signed finished copy!). Thank you Andrea!

More Shay mail!

That’s right this week I got another package from my favorite stepped-out-of-the-page fictional character, Shay Doran. For those of you who don’t know, Shay is one of the main characters of Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. Her book will be available shortly and you want it! It’s awesome!

You can see my review here, and you can click here to see the first package I received from Shay.

I took pictures of what I got, and this all part of a puzzle Shay is trying to figure out on his Facebook Page (you can click images to make them bigger)

(Cindy is my real name for those of you who didn’t know)

Did you see that last paragraph?? IF you Pre-Order Nightshade (which you should do!) you could become a character, how cool is that?

Now here is what the package contained… an old book, Wessex Tales by Thomas Hardy

And as you can see, Nikita wants to help Shay to!

This images was detached at the end of the book, I honestly don’t know if it’s a clue. And then there were two marked pages.

I think this ones says Without apparent evidence of death known, he passed away in London 1666. But I’m really not sure, so please let me know if you have a better idea!

And I think this one says 1383 he came in to fe (?) what’s fe? I don’t know. I really can’t figure it out, so I need your help please!
Edit: Lexie suggested 1383 he came in to life which would make a lot more sense!

Shay Doran will you marry me?

Well if I wasn’t already planning to marry a fabulous man I would sure ask him!

You’ll ask me who Shay Doran is? Well he is the man who sent me this fabulous package

Ok a box…. Now what was inside?

Sounds promising doesn’t it?

That’s right a pretty Calla Lily wrapped in a poor shredded book. Isn’t Shay a romantic?

And did you notice the gold key tied in the ribbon?

Well it’s a UBS Key and here’s what it contained

Isn’t awesome?
For those who don’t know. Shay Doran is one of the main characters of the upcoming release Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. I think it’s an AWESOME publicity campaign!

Here’s more about the book:

Nightshade1

Calla Tor has always know her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding scared sites for the keepers. By following her heart, she might loose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

As you may have noticed, Calla is the main character’s name, as well as the flowers on the cover, which explains the pretty flower Shay sent me!

I LOVED Nightshade, I already pre-ordered my finished copy and I really can’t wait for the next installment. You can read my Nightshade review here.

Shay invited us to his facebook page and so far, 4 episodes are available, let me show you the first one!

What do you think? Isn’t beyond awesome? If you haven’t had the chance to read Nightshade yet (or even if you did!) Shay’s Facebook Page is the perfect introduction on Nightshade’s world. I hope you drop by and take a look =)

Guest Post & Giveaway with Andrea Cremer

closenecklace

I am very happy to have the amazing debut author Andrea Cremer by my side today! The first  novel of her trilogy, Nightshade, will release in October 2010 and let me tell you, this is one amazing book! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC, so you can read my review here if you want more details! Andrea created a rather unique werewolf love in her book, and I asked her to tell us a bit more about it!

Something Wolfish This Way Comes

Thanks so much, Tynga, for the invitation to share some thoughts about wolves and writiheight=264ng. This post will be part confession, part discussion.  First: confession.

I’ve lived long in the realm of paranormal/fantasy proudly bearing my badge of vampire girl. That’s right: I came on board as a fan of vamps, not werewolves. I was Team Edward during Twilight. I prefer Bill and Eric to Sam in Tru Blood. But before you start throwing tomatoes, let me tell you why.

Friends who knew I was a vampire girl presumed that meant I love ALL forms of paranormal, so they’d push werewolves at me enthusiastically. I wasn’t interested, and I couldn’t figure out why. After all they were fierce, strong, magical – all things I liked. So what was the problem? And then it hit me – I didn’t like werewolves because I love wolves.

That’s right – I’m a wolf girl, but a real wolf girl. I grew up so far North in Wisconsin that it’s practically Canada. Wolves roamed the forests of my homeland. I also loved National Geographic specials even more than cartoons. So by age 9 I could rattle off biological and ecological info like a pro. Wolves to me were beautiful, intelligent, social, and graceful.

Werewolves seemed to be none of these things. The werewolves I’d encountered on page and screen were hideous – half man/half beast, usually ugly, often unintelligent, driven only by rage or bloodlust. height=169

And worst of all: they didn’t want to be wolves. Lycanthropy occurs as a curse, or a disease. The endgoal of most werewolf tales was to kill the wolf or free the affected person of the wolf curse. height=249

I couldn’t come to grips with that idea. If someone asked me – hey wanna turn into a wolf? I’d say “heck, yeah!” Wouldn’t you rather be a wolf? From what I know of wolves, the answer is indisputably YES.

Nightshade’s Guardians are my way of coming to terms with my love of wolves and my trouble with classic werewolf tales. Calla – the alpha female who narrates Nightshade – is powerful and revels in her life as a wolf.

Her troubles arise not from her ability to shift, but from the ways in which her masters try to limit her power, to restrain her freedoms.

Wolves also inspire me because of their sociability.

height=277

height=232Pack relationships offered a wonderful way to explore a world of friendship, servitude, loyalty, and betrayal. While Nightshade is about Calla’s journey, it’s also the story of her pack. The other wolves in the book play key roles throughout the trilogy. Wolves offered a wonderful framework around which to explore relationships, love, fear, and rivalry.

I still love vampires, but I have to say I think I’m switching teams. Wolves carry a magic and mystery to me that captured my heart and hasn’t let go. It was just a matter of finding my own way to tell their story.

------------------------

Thank you very much Andrea for sharing with us =) It’s true that werewolves are offend portrayed as violent and impulsive creatures and the lore you created for Nightshade was quite refreshing!

Now to give you a taste of what you can expect from Nightshade, here are the very first sentences of the book!

I'd always welcomed war, but in battle my passion rose unbidden.
The bear's roar filled my ears. Its hot breath assaulted my nostrils, fueling my bloodlust. Behind me I could hear the boy's ragged breath. The desperate sound made my nails dig into the earth. I snarled at the larger predator again, daring it to try to get past me.

Convinced yet? Yeah, that’s what I thought!

Andrea generously offered and ARC of Nightshade and a wolfish surprise (a calendar, stuffed animal, or postcards, something like that) to a lucky reader!

Why is it a surprise? Well surprises are way cool, but Andrea hasn’t decided yet lol so whoever wins, please let me know what you received lol I’m a curious little think!

ARC- Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Calla is the alpha of her pack (the Nightshades), and lives in a world where her future has already been spelled out for her. On Samhain, she will be mated to Ren, alpha of the Bane pack and it was decided long before they were born. She never questioned her destiny, until the day a human boy made her doubt. Could she have a choice? Could she draw her own path? Are the truth she always believed in just a bunch of lies?
The Morning Calla saved Shay’s live, the lines of her duties blurred to leave tons of questions in it’s wake. Will she be faithful to her pack or her heart?

Andrea Cremer gratified us with a fantastic lore when writing this book. The actors’ roles aren’t clear at first, but fear not you will understand everything in time. Magical beings such as Keepers, Guardians and Searchers are the main stars (their precise nature is explained in chapter 9, I don’t wanna ruin the fun!), but they are also surrounded by creatures such as wraiths, succubus, incubus and more.

I really, I mean REALLY, loved this book! From the moment Calla saves Shay you think you know how the story will end, but oh could we be more wrong? The story is full of twist and turns and you really have no idea what’s gonna happen next. You just keep on reading because you crave for more the entire time, and trust me, you’re in for quite a ride!

Cremer tailored amazing characters, and even though there are many of them, a whole pack – pun intended –, you feel like you personally know each characters. Some I liked, some annoyed me, others I would’ve smite on sigh lol, but you have an opinion on every single one of them, which makes the story that much more interesting.

Calla, also nicknamed Lily because of her white hair, is incredible. From the very first page until the very last she questions her actions. Torn between a sense of duty and a desire for freedom, every decision she makes will come down to that dilemma, and Cremer keeps you guessing the whole time. I liked how she cared for her packmates and would do anything for them, she has a big heart.

Shay is pretty much the devil’s advocate. He drops in Calla’s life as if falling from the sky and he forces her to question the boundaries she’s always lived with. And of course, he’s got to be good looking right? *winks* He is lovable, attentive, available and faithful. He’s got the whole package going for him, if you ignore the TINY fact that he is human…

Ren, oh Ren. This character has so many layers that even after finishing the book I can’t quite decide if I like him or not. He is promised to Calla, but it didn’t stop him from dating the entire cheerleader team. He is dominant, jealous, unstable and very protective of Calla. He seems to care for her, but his actions are often questionable. One thing is sure, this character will surprise you.

The pack is also awesome, they each have their own personality, hopes and shadows. I liked most of them but Fey Nightshade got under my skin. Geez that girl was annoying me lol. She’s unruly and kept giving Cal The Attitude.

Wow that was a long character’s analysis, well I guess it shows how important the characters are in the book =)

The end really took my breath away, I truly didn’t see it coming and Cremer leaves us with a deadly cliffhanger. How am I suppose to wait for the second book with an end like that? I really don’t know. I can’t wait to see how the characters will get themselves out of the trouble they got into, it promises to be interesting!

Nightshade is a magical world full action, passion, love and treason. The second you open the book you’re in for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and you’ll be left wanting more. Andrea’s debut is a definite success and I strongly suggest you pre-order it now! I know I’ll be ordering myself a finished copy! Oh and how beautiful is that cover? I mean, Come On!

Trailer Thursday - Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

This meme was inspired both by Dark Fairie Tales and Stop, Drop and Read.

I've seen this book in quite a few place this past week and I thought it seems great!

Nightshade by Andrea Cremer will release October 2010, so we still have a long time to wait unfortunately =(

    How gorgeous is that cover?

Product description (from the 10'ers blog):

While other teenage girls daydream about boys, Calla Tor imagines ripping out her enemies’ throats. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Calla was born a warrior and on her eighteenth-birthday she’ll become the alpha female of the next generation of Guardian wolves. But Calla’s predestined path veers off course the moment she saves the life of a wayward hiker, a boy her own age. This human boy’s secret will turn the young pack's world upside down and forever alter the outcome of the centuries-old Witches' War that surrounds them all.

    Now on to the trailer!
I was a bit disapointed cause it doesn't give much info, but hey it's a teaser so I guess it filled it's purpose since I'm completely teased =P
