A Trace of Moonlight blog tour: Guest post by Allison Pang + giveaway!

A Trace of Moonlight blog tour button

I'm over the moon (buh duh duh) about today's guest because it's Allison Pang, author of the Abby Sinclair trilogy. Her books are absolutely wonderful and I'm so excited that we're taking part in her blog tour celebrating the release of the third and final book in the trilogy, A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT, which comes out tomorrow.

One of the things I like best about Allison's books is how she manages to straddle the line between urban fantasy and paranormal romance. The Abby Sinclair trilogy has many of the elements associated with both genres and I wanted to see what she had to say on the differences between the two.

Without further ado, here's Allison's take on the subject!

-------------------------

UF vs PNR

One of the questions I see being asked a lot is what the main differences are between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Sometimes I think this is really more of a marketing issue – where a book is shelved can definitely influence a reader’s expectations. But these days it seems like the lines between the genres are blurring together.

While both genres certainly share a lot of the same elements – otherworldly powers or preternatural creatures, strong-willed heroines and tortured heroes - it can be hard to classify them correctly. The bottom line, though, is going to be the romance. Although UF stories *can* have romance, they don’t have to, whereas in a PNR, the romance *is* the story.

A Trace of Moonlight trading cards by DarchalaSo how do you tell if you’re reading a PNR or a UF with romantic elements? Often the key clue is the HEA (Happily Ever After). Romances are usually required to have one (and I’ve often seen reviewers lamenting the fact that the book they were reading *didn’t* have one – again – it can be hard if books aren’t labeled properly. ) But HEA or no, the main thing is the plot. If the plot centers around a couple and their quest to get together, it’s a romance. If you can take those romantic elements out of a story and the plot can still stand by itself, it’s a UF. Also, note that PNR books in a series will often focus on a different couple in each story – UF books will sometimes have a romantic arc that spans several books.

There are still plenty of books that seem to straddle this line (I’ve seen some reviewers and bloggers talking about labeling some books as UF-Romance to try to make sense of it) – my own included. That’s because when I originally wrote A Brush of Darkness, it was a PNR. Had an HEA and a *lot* more sex. >_< But after I sold it, the publisher asked if I could turn it into a UF – that meant toning down the love scenes and changing the focus of the plot. The secondary characters were beefed up, and the mystery elements fleshed out a bit more. And yes, there was no longer an HEA. I’m not sure how successful it was – I think that maybe there’s still too much romance for the average UF reader…and not enough for the average PNR reader, but overall I’m pretty happy with the mix.

So, what do you prefer to read? Clearly delineated genres, or books that seem to have multiple elements?

More about A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT:

A Trace of Moonlight by Allison PangDrinking from the waters of lethe and offering herself up as Faerie’s sacrificial Tithe …these just might be the least of Abby Sinclair’s problems..

Abby’s pact with a demon—whether or not she remembers making it—is binding, so she’d better count herself lucky that (in the words of a daemon who knows better) there’s nearly always a loophole. But her friends’ reckless attempts to free her, well intentioned though they may be, set off a disastrous chain of events. In no time at all, Abby turns her incubus lover mortal and gets herself killed, cursed, and married to an elven prince whose mother wants her dead. She might have even been able to recover from all that had she not lost the Key to the CrossRoads to her mortal enemy, who promptly uses his restored power to wreak havoc on the OtherWorld and put its very existence in jeopardy…

Only one person can make things right again, but to find her, Abby must place her trust in allies of mixed loyalties, and conquer her nightmares once and for all.

Reading A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT was bittersweet for me. I really enjoyed the two previous Abby Sinclair novels and so I was eager to see what Allison Pang was going to do with/to Abby and her band of friends and lovers. The author has created incredibly real and complex relationships in this trilogy and I've been on the edge of my proverbial seat waiting to find out how Abby would get herself out of the pickle she put herself in at the end of A SLIVER OF SHADOW (that whole Tithe thing in the cover copy) and if she'd settle down with Talivar or Ion. The good news? Most of the big questions are answered. The not-quite-as-good-but-definitely-not-bad news? I wasn't as hooked as I've been in previous instalments.

A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT has everything I've come to expect from an Abby Sinclair novel: an unpredictable plot, fantastically fleshed-out characters, magnificent snark, and steamy romance. (In fact, the book opens with some very steamy romance, making the excerpt below NSFW.) The cover copy actually gives away a lot of the plot points, though it doesn't hurt the reading of the story since there's so much going on in A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT. Thankfully, part of this "so much" is also a satisfying amount of resolution for a couple of the big arcs of the series: will Abby choose Ion or Talivar, and will she ever fully control her abilities as a Dreamer?

To address the first big question: I was thrilled with how Allison Pang dealt with this. I loved the way both Ion and Taliver are portrayed in A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT because they both get to shine and you can really understand why Abby has feelings for both guys. I've always been a sucker for Talivar and his tragic story (which we learn more about!!) but Ion makes some incredible gestures in this book and I felt for him in a way that I never had previously. Relationships are such a key feature of this trilogy and the author really knows how to put the reader and the characters through the ringer, not just with Abby and her men but with other folks as well. Melanie and Nobu's relationship exemplifies the word complicated and the Charlie-Robert-Moira-Benjamin situation is enough to break your heart, never mind Abby's unusual relationship with her father (and her father's with the Queen).

For the second question: I also really liked how Abby grows as a Dreamer in A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT. She's been a little afraid of her gifts for a while now but she really steps up her game this time around. It's always fun watching a favourite character come into his or her own and I feel like Abby grows immensely in A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT.

Despite this, I wasn't as invested this time around. I usually enjoy a well-written finale, which A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT definitely is, but I felt a little disconnected from the story and I'm not sure why. Allison Pang's writing remains outstanding and I truly did enjoy reading this book but it's probably my least favourite of the three Abby novels. At first I thought it might be because this book is darker than the rest and Phin is not his usual snarky self throughout but I generally enjoy dark (urban) fantasy so I don't think that this is the case. I think it might be information overload -- there's a lot of story and a ton of Big Events in A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT!

While I didn't love A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT as much as the two previous Abby novels, this book is still an excellent finale for the trilogy. I may not be shouting at the skies but I really did enjoy reading A TRACE OF MOONLIGHT and fully recommend the series to you. This novel offers closure on many of the main questions in the trilogy and leaves open the possibility of exploring the world further since there's definitely not a nice, neat bow for all of the characters. I follow Allison Pang on her blog and Twitter (some might say "stalk", but I'm sticking with "follow") and it looks like she's open to the idea of coming back to this world and telling another character's story, so I've got my fingers crossed. I believe she mentioned Melanie, who I've always been interested in, so here's hoping that passing comment comes true!

Today’s guest is Allison Pang, author of the brilliant Abby Sinclair books. In fact, today's post is part of her tour promiting A Sliver of Shadow. Allison's books are must-read urban fantasy and I hope you all enjoy getting to know her a little bit better.

Before I seriously started pursuing the writing gig, I actually had hobbies. (Aside from gaming, believe it or not).

Allison Pang cross stitching 1

One of those was Cross Stitching, which I've been doing since I was in 6th grade. Now, the trademarks of a good cross stitcher is shown in the way the stitches are done. Traditionally, the back should look nearly as good as the front.

Alas, mine never have, but as long as the front looks good, I'm pretty happy. Anyway, I started going through my craft bin this morning and realized how many projects I have that I've never started, and probably never will at this point. I've been collecting patterns as I go since they don't always hang around, and there's nothing more frustrating than falling in love with a design and then not being able to do it five years later when you're finally ready for it.

So, I buy them. I have an odd fascination with opening a new kit and going through all the bits and pieces - the thread, the beads, the patterns. It's the potential of what it can become that I think I like best.

Sadly, the writing has taken up so much of my free time that I'm pretty sure I'll never manage to finish or even start a lot of them now.

Allison Pang cross stitching 2One of my first. I was about 12 when I did this one.
Allison Pang cross stitching 3This one hangs above my bed.
Allison Pang cross stitching 4Did this one in college. I included my foot in the shot so you could get an idea of the size. (I like'em big and complicated.)
Allison Pang cross stitching 5For my daughter…really need to get it framed and cleaned up. >_<
Allison Pang cross stitching 6 Early college years as well. This one is about as big as that dragon one above, and the colors were very interesting. One of my favorites to work on.
Allison Pang cross stitching 7Early high school. Also pretty big. Yes, there is a big unicorn theme here.

Also? Not framed.

Yes, that also is a theme. >_<
Allison Pang cross stitching 8One small portion of the pile of projects that I will never get to.
Sad, but you never know.

There are others that I've done that I couldn't find to take a picture of and many that I've given away over the years as well. And one of my mother's that she worked on for probably 10 years, but died before she could finish. I subsequently finished it and gave it to my dad in the year after she passed.

Perhaps one day I will win the lottery and spend the rest of my days writing and cross stitching.

It could happen, right? :)

Just when her new life as a TouchStone – a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds – seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate’s away…let’s just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.

But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she’s making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.

I was very excited when I got a chance to read A Sliver of Shadow early. I've been a huge fan of Allison Pang's ever since I read her debut A Brush of Darkness and I was thrilled to re-immerse myself in Abby's world. (You can read my thoughts on the first Abby Sinclair book here.)

A Sliver of Shadow picks up several months after the events in A Brush of Darkness. You don't need to remember what happened, though, because the author does a wonderful job of filling in the blanks and re-introducing characters as they deal with the aftermath of the first novel. In the relative quiet, Abby has been trying to understand what it means to be a Dreamer and how to use her powers, with marginal success. She's also taking care of Moira's baby, who's half fae and half angel, and trying to do her duties as Moira's TouchStone. Of course, things hit the fan pretty early on in the novel, ending Abby and co.'s peace and quiet.

From here, Abby is on quite a rollercoaster, thanks to Allison Pang's willingness to have her characters suffer. Abby has to face off with a new villain, a fae named Tresa, and also learns all sorts of stuff about her family. Specifically, we find out who Abby's father is and it helps explain some of Abby's gifts. Never in a million years would I have expected this type of reveal so early in a series and I was pleasantly surprised to find out who her daddy is. I love that Allison Pang doesn't hold back, with either adventure or big reveals. And there's a lot of both since about half of the book is set in Faerie, giving A Sliver of Shadow a more fantastical feel and a host of new characters. We also learn a lot more about how Faerie society works and where Moira and her brother Taliver figure into things.

Of course, I can't write about an Abby Sinclair book without mentioning Phineas, the pervy miniature unicorn who lives in Abby's underwear drawer. As in A Brush of Darkness, Phineas is my favourite. He's got an incredibly dirty mind and some of the best lines in the book. (He also has his own Twitter feed in case you're interested in following him.) I was also won over by Taliver, who becomes less mysterious and more human in this instalment of the series. Over the course of the novel, Abby and Taliver's relationship becomes more interesting and more meaningful, thanks to some of these revelations, and I look forward to seeing where things go from here.

A Sliver of Shadow ends on a cliffhanger. It's not a crazy cliffhanger that offers no closure but it's definitely setting us up for the next book, which won't be out for months and months. It's going to be a painful wait because I'm sure that Book 3 will be just as enjoyable as its predecessors.

I'm going to sign off by saying that Allison Pang's Abby Sinclair books are epic urban fantasy. They should be on the must-read list of every urban fantasy fan!

PSB: Guest Post & Giveaway with Allison Pang

PSB2

Alison Pang

Author’s Note: For this particular blog post, I was asked to write a “discussion” between Abby and Brystion about sex in literature. I don’t do well with the interview/dialogue of characters, so I wrote it a very short scene. As you can see, the discussion sort of dissolved the moment Phineas showed up. Alas.
Although this scene doesn’t actually take place in A Brush of Darkness, I suspect it could have been wedged in there sometime after Katy is rescued.

----------------------

The last box thudded at my feet with a whoosh, the taped edges protesting at the rough treatment.  Two quick slices of my cutter made short work of the cardboard, revealing another stack of one-off coverless romances.  A scan of the titles had me rolling my eyes, even as I continued to wonder why Moira seemed to take such delight in stocking stripped books.

You’d think a Faery Princess could afford something a bit more legal than products that had clearly fallen off the back of a truck, but I supposed it wasn’t worth the argument. I picked up one of books off the top, dimly noting it was about some sort of savage splendor.  I flipped through the pages to the first smut scene I could find, letting out a soft sigh. Inventory could wait at least a few minutes right?

“Why do you read that stuff?” Brystion rumbled from over my shoulder. “Who the hell refers to a woman’s breasts as ‘creamy mounds’ with a straight face anyway? It’s completely unrealistic crap.”

“Yeah, because becoming one half of a Legolas and Aragorn  dream sandwich is *so* much more likely to happen,” I retorted. “Besides, happy endings are rare enough in the real world…why should the sex be any different?”

The incubus gave me a sour look, slumping down so that his legs stretched out on the floor, his elbows propped up on one of the overstuffed seat cushions.  “Maybe,” he said finally, one hand idly pulling on a fringed pillow. “But really, Lord of the Rings is one of the most sexually charged romances out there.”

I glanced down at the page, trying to recapture the spot where our hero, the debonair Captain Cullyswagger was throwing the terminally pretty and naïve heroine over the edge of his bolstered four-poster and fiddling with his codpiece. “You don’t say,” I said absently. “Furry-footed hobbits do it for you then? And here I figured you for a fan of the Marquis de Sade.”

“Are you kidding me? With all that ‘I’m coming Master Frodo’ and the blowing of the Horn of Gondor nonsense, you’d think there was an orgy every five pages or so.”  He nudged me with his foot when I let out a strangled cough, a hint of amusement glittering from behind those dark eyes. “See, and now you’ll never be able to read it the same way again.”

“I imagine Tolkien is thrilled,” I sighed. “I’ll stick with the bodice rippers, thanks. The prose may be purple, but at least it’s sort of normal.”

“He put his sex into her sex and they had sex,” Brystion snorted. “Yeah, that’s romantic. Between that and the sparkly vampires, I hardly know how to contain my glee.”

“Shapeshifters,” I pointed out. “Shapeshifters are very big right now.  You know, all those furry alpha males, unleashing their sexy animal instincts…”

“I’ve got an animal instinct for you,” Phineas piped from behind one of the stacks. “And speaking of sexy beasts, you should totally read Under the Hill by Aubrey Beardsley.”

I frowned at Brystion. “What the hell is he talking about?”

The incubus smirked. “A unicorn gets a hand job from the goddess Venus every morning after feeding him biscuits. And then she consumes the –”

My upper lip curled at the thought and I waved him off, shuddering. “Yeah, I get the picture. And, Phin? Don’t get any ideas. Be happy I feed you the bacon and let it go.”

The unicorn waggled his beard at me, his tiny horned face peeking around the corner shelf. “I’ll settle for the bacon. For now.” He shrugged at my glare. “Listen, don’t get all pissy at me. Some of those shapeshifter books are pretty nasty. All that arousal scenting stuff?”

“It’s part of the animal thing, I assume.  It’s not like the wolf guys are shoving their noses up her crotch. Much,” I added ruefully. “They have better senses of smell, that’s all. Realism in books or something. It’s a good thing, right?”

Phineas and Brystion exchanged a look. “No offense, honey cakes, but if your lover can smell you creaming from across the room, you probably need your lady parts checked out. I mean, maybe some guys are into crottage cheese,” the unicorn continued hastily, “but the downstairs plumbing probably shouldn’t be leaking something that looks like it would belong on a taco.”

I mulled this over for a moment, staring down at the pages of the book with a blank sort of regret. “Sorry,” I told the dashing Captain Culllyswagger and his newly freed turgid magnificence. “But yours is not to question why…”

I chucked the paperback at the unicorn, grimacing with satisfaction at the resounding grunt upon impact.

Brystion shook his head and knelt beside the box as Phineas retreated back into the stacks with an aggrieved sigh, mumbling something about women taking a walk on the beach with their mothers.  “Why do you keep him again?”

“I dunno.” I bit the inside of my cheek in irritation. “I think I liked him better when he didn’t talk. But for an incubus, you seem remarkably uninterested in literary sex. I would have thought you liked this sort of thing. Widen the imagination of your Dreamers and all that.”

“Maybe I just like picking on your reading material.” His eyes flared golden for a moment, and he nuzzled the edge of my chin. “Or maybe I just don’t see the point. Why read about it when you could actually be doing it?”

The images of the virile Captain Cullyswagger cheerfully rodgering away at the not-quite-so-virginal-as-he-thought heroine were suddenly chased away by something involving me, the incubus and the pile of pillows beside the chair.  Blinking away the thought, I smiled wanly. “I see what you mean.”

“Good. Now that we’ve dashed your romantic dreams, let’s go snag something to eat,” he grunted, his gaze roaming over me with a different sort of hunger. His mouth pursed. “But not Mexican.”
