"When I'm not writing" with Dianne Duvall + giveaway!

Badge_OFFICIALToday we have a guest post from Dianne Duvall, as part of her tour for her new book, A SORCERESS OF HIS OWN. I love her Immortal Guardians series but now she's out with something new, a self-published novel. I think you'll really enjoy discovering exactly what she does when she's not crafting her next novel!

WINW

When I’m not writing, I’m often thinking about writing, either going over the scene I wrote the day before or mentally writing the next one. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes I even mentally write scenes that I know will never find their way into my books. When you create the characters in a series and live with them for years, you tend to get to know them so well that it’s hard not to imagine them in this or that situation, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with the series arc.

When I’m not actually immersing myself in the world of Immortal Guardians and Gifted Ones, I’m often still doing writing related activities. Chatting with other readers and writers on social media sites. (Love to do that!) Blogging. Updating my website. (I’m not that great at HTML, but always seem to muddle my way through it.) Designing teaser images to share with readers. Or doing research. I’ve had to research some of the most peculiar subjects for my books. I know some writers dislike that portion of their vocation, but I actually enjoy it. I’m always curious to see what I’m going to have to look up next.

When I’m not writing, I also work in the local independent film industry, which is another fun creative outlet for me. I’ve worked all three stages of production in a variety of projects that ranged from drama to horror to romantic comedy. And, yes, I was still thinking about writing while doing it. LOL.

In pre-production, I have served as Script Editor, Assistant Casting Director, and Shooting Scheduler. Those are pretty self-explanatory. I edit scripts. I organize casting calls, rehearsals, and table readings. I also create shooting schedules, which is actually trickier than it sounds because films are shot out of sequence.

During production, I’ve worked as the special effects make-up artist, sometimes providing what I call blood and guts make-up. This is always fun, because the actors and crew get such a kick out of it. I have also provided other special effects, like “candy glass” car windows that can safely be shattered without harming the actor. I have also served as Script Supervisor. The Script Supervisor ensures continuity. So, if an actor scuffs her shoe in Scene 23, the Script Supervisor ensures that the actor’s shoe is scuffed in all subsequent scenes. That, too, is more difficult than is sounds, since—as I mentioned—films are shot out of sequence.

Post-production is the stage that allows me the most freedom to be creative, so I tend to enjoy it the most. In post-production, I edit films, add special effects, create unique title sequences, design movie posters, and fashion DVD menus and covers.

All of this film work, of course, came in handy when the time finally came to shoot trailers for my books. (So exciting!) It can also be quite time-consuming, though, and have very hectic schedules. So writing and filmmaking combined doesn’t leave me much in the way of downtime. I’d like to say I spend quite a bit of time reading. I’ve always been a voracious reader. But now I tend to get my fiction fix by listening to audiobooks while I do all of the things around the house that I sometimes neglect while writing: folding laundry, washing dishes, trying to solve the age-old socks vanishing in the dryer mystery. This year I’ve decided to make time for some gardening, but am not off to a stellar start. I’ve already neglected my little seedlings shamefully while working to meet my latest deadlines.

And, of course, I spend as much time as I can with family and friends, who—fortunately—don’t mind when my mind once more wanders away from the movie or TV show I’m supposed to be watching or the game I’m supposed to be playing and begins fashioning the next scene in my latest work in progress.

Did I mention that when I’m not writing, I’m often thinking about it? :)

Night Unbound blog tour: Guest post by Dianne Duvall + giveaway

Night Unbound Tour Button

Instead of our  usual "When I'm not writing" post, we have a different guest post for you today, from the very talented Dianne Duvall. Without further ado, here are some confessions of a panster!

 ---------------------

Confessions of a Pantser

Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #1)One of the most common questions I’m asked as a writer is whether I’m a plotter or a pantser.  My answer:  I’m a devoted pantser.  When starting a new book, I don’t first sketch out a detailed plot outline.  I simply sit down, open a new file, and fly by the seat of my pants.  Yes, I know how much I want the overall series arc to progress.  But the rest I allow to unfold as I write.  And it’s a good thing I do, too, because giving my imagination free reign has allowed quite a few characters to surprise me, taking the story in directions I didn’t originally intend and affecting the Immortal Guardians series arc or plot in ways I never anticipated.

Night Reigns by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #2)Ami, or Amiriska, was the first character to surprise me.  I had no idea, when I began writing DARKNESS DAWNS (Book 1), that Ami would rise above her torturous past and become Marcus’s heroine in NIGHT REIGNS (Book 2).  Nor did I realize what a prominent role she would play in ensuing books.  Though her own book was the second in the series, her story with Marcus continues to unfold in NIGHT UNBOUND and will spark intriguing changes in the series arc.

Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #3)Bastien is the second character who surprised me.  When Sebastien Newcombe first burst upon the scene in DARKNESS DAWNS, he was the villain.  His heart full of vengeance, Bastien raised an army of psychotic vampires he pitted against the Immortal Guardians, intent on destroying them.  But there was just something about him that I (and many readers, I was pleased to discover) believed was redeemable.  As did Dr. Melanie Lipton, who helped Bastien transform from villain to hero in PHANTOM SHADOWS (Book 3).  Had Bastien not made that transition, the Immortal Guardians would never have considered taking an important new approach to the vampire menace, one that will feature prominently in NIGHT UNBOUND.

Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #4)Zach, the hero of NIGHT UNBOUND, is the latest character to surprise me.  Zach entered the series as a pretty enigmatic figure.  Dark.  Threatening.  Seeming more foe than friend to the Immortal Guardians.  And I intended for him to remain such:  a rather mysterious, winged figure who occasionally slipped from the shadows to perform this deed or that and issue dire warnings and thinly veiled threats.  Then he accepted a lollipop from Ami in PHANTOM SHADOWS and, aware of her tortured past, showed her kindness.  When he did, he revealed a whole new side of his character.  And his role in the series took a dramatic turn, one that would become more evident in DARKNESS RISES (Book 4) and culminate in NIGHT UNBOUND.

Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #5)I’m so excited by the direction in which Zach has taken the series.  And I love the deeper, richer character he has become.  (He’s actually one of my favorites now.)  Perfect for Lisette, the heroine.  Lisette is a courageous, kick-butt, telepathic Immortal Guardian who has labored for centuries beneath the guilt of transforming her twin brothers.  I always knew she wouldn’t seek happiness for herself unless her brothers found it first.  But I had no idea whom she would eventually love until she captured, chained up, and interrogated Zach in DARKNESS RISES.  Their intense fascination with each other fired my imagination, compelling me to write their story next . . . and I enjoyed it so much.

Zach was a very welcome surprise.  And I doubt he will be the last.  That’s the joy of being a pantser.  I can’t wait to see what will happen next, and hope you’ll join me on the journey.  :-)

Here's the scoop on NIGHT UNBOUND:

Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall (Immortal Guardians #5)

For centuries, Lisette d'Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can't bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians' command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for—and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.

Zach is an exile, a loner. He won't defend himself against false accusation or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he'll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of supervamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall

Dianne Duvall's done it again. NIGHT UNBOUND, the fifth book in her Immortal Guardians series, will keep you hooked from the first word. I've been hoping for a Zach story since he showed up in the series and Duvall has put together an amazing romance between Zach and Lisette, one of my favourite Immortal Guardians. And Duvall also throws in a lot more information about Zach, Seth, and the Others, which was very satisfying since I find them rather mysterious.

But first, let's talk romance. Lisette and Zach are a fascinating couple because they face different obstacles than the other characters we've seen in the series so far. First, there's the fact that Seth doesn't trust Zach, which means that no one trusts Zach. And while, as readers, we know it's unfounded, it does take Zach time to earn everyone's faith. And he gets some truly awesome scenes as part of his path to joining the team! There are a few laugh-out-loud moments in NIGHT UNBOUND and I enjoyed the unexpectedly lighthearted comedy. On the other side, Lisette knows that helping Zach is traitorous behaviour, given Seth's feelings, and it creates some uncomfortable moments for her. But Lisette and Zach's connection is undeniable and they get a beautiful love story in NIGHT UNBOUND.

Now for the question of the Others, which I was most curious about when I heard that NIGHT UNBOUND would be Zach and Lisette's story. Most of the pairings in the series so far have been Immortal Guardian with human(-eventually-turned-Immortal Guardian), except for Ami and Marcus, who fall under the alien with Immortal Guardian combo category. By the end of their stories, these characters didn't have secrets from one another, if they had any to start, but Zach can't tell Lisette much about his life as an Other because the consequences would be so dire. It's simply too dangerous for her to know everything at this point. For centuries, Seth has kept these secrets from everyone except David, who's been with him forever, and so I was curious about how Duvall would resolve the tension this huge secret creates between Zach and Lisette. Thankfully, her solution is great. It fits the worldbuilding and the characters really well. I won't say precisely what happens since it might ruin things for you a bit but I will say that it's a realistic outcome. Zach and Lisette are together by the end of NIGHT UNBOUND (obvs, this is paranormal romance) but they do address this issue.

NIGHT UNBOUND is a great paranormal romance that also progresses the series story arc about the Immortal Guardians' battles with their unknown enemies. Please don't judge this book by the cover! It really doesn't do Zach -- or the story -- justice because NIGHT UNBOUND will have you on the edge of your seat from cover to cover.

Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

In DARKNESS RISES, Dianne Duvall introduces to a couple of really interesting new characters: Krysta and her brother Sean. Krysta is a gifted one who knows nothing about the Immortal Guardians. She's been hunting vampires on her own for six years, after her husband was murdered and she was left for dead by a vampire. Krysta's ability to see auras makes her better able to fight vampires, something her brother can't do. But Sean has the ability to heal so he spends his evenings healing Krysta after her battles. It's an existence that can only end one way, until Krysta catches Étienne's eye during a battle. Étienne is immediately drawn to Krysta and Krysta to Étienne, though she hates herself for being attracted to a "vampire". She learns the truth when Étienne saves her from a military unit that was trying to apprehend him and she and Sean are introduced to the world of the Immortal Guardians.

I really enjoyed these new developments. This is a great way to grow the series, introducing new gifted ones and a renewed military threat. Krysta and Sean are great additions to the Immortal Guardians network/family, and Duvall plants some very interesting seeds for future novels with this renewed military effort to capture and study an Immortal Guardian. I can't say too much about it since it would be a major spoiler but I will say that these developments have me even more excited about this series.

We also get to know Zach, Seth's fellow angel, a lot better. He's so different from Seth but I found him to be very interesting. His relationship with Ami is adorable and Duvall seems to be getting ready to hook him up with one of the Immortal Guardians, which will hopefully happen sooner rather than later, so that I can get more of him.

DARKNESS RISES is a great paranormal romance and a strong entry in the Immortal Guardians series. Duvall's initial story arc wrapped up in the last novel but she's created some very intriguing possibilities this time around, which has renewed my enthusiasm for this series. This is one PNR series I would recommend to anyone who appreciates great characters, continued story arcs, and passionate romance. For the full picture, you should start with DARKNESS DAWNS but you could probably pick up DARKNESS RISES with little difficulty.

Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall

Gosh, I love this series. Each instalment is more exciting and PHANTOM SHADOWS, the third book, is a thrilling mix of romance, action, and intrigue. I was really looking forward to it because I've found Bastien to be such an intriguing character in the two previous books. After all, Bastien is an immortal who thought he was a vampire because Seth didn't find him in time, resulting in a serious identity crisis. But he's fighting the proverbial good fight now, with allies who don't really want him, with a few rare exceptions, like Ami, Seth, David, and Dr. Lipton. His special gift is empathy, which gives him some extra layers, and he really shines in PHANTOM SHADOWS. Getting to know him in this novel was a lot of fun, and it answered the questions that have been floating around my mind since DARKNESS DAWNS.

Melanie is an excellent match for Bastien. She's so compassionate and on his side from the start, since she sees the bonds he has with the vampires she's trying to save. She's shown up in previous novels and I've always liked her but we never got to know her in great detail. As you'll see if you pick up PHANTOM SHADOWS, Melanie is more than a match for Bastien on an intellectual and romantic level. They have great chemistry together and I enjoyed seeing them slowly reveal themselves to each other (and I'm not talking about dropping trou). Duvall creates great couples in each novels and Bastien and Melanie are definitely a strong pair.

The whole idea of saving vampires from their inevitable insanity is a really cool one. Vampirism as a disease is something we've seen in other books but this is a bit different: the more vampires indulge, the more they lose themselves. Melanie is trying to help vampires retain their humanity the way that immortals do, with mixed results. It's one of the most interesting subplots in the novel, and the series as a whole.

There's also a lot of strong development in the military subplot -- where the bad mercenary/ex-government/ex-military types are trying to get their hands on an immortal. These are the same guys who tortured Ami so it's nice to see Duvall delve deeper into this storyline and the potential implications of the immortals' exposure.  To avoid spoilers, I won't comment on this too much but I will say that this is my other favourite subplot in the Immortal Guardians series.

Duvall is a very talented writer who has crafted an intriguing world and characters. I get excited every time I see a new book on the shelves. I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for great paranormal romance.

Night Reigns by Dianne Duvall

I'm behind on this great series so I'm trying to get caught up. I really enjoyed DARKNESS DAWNS, the first book in Duvall's Immortal Guardians series, so it's high time I dove back into this interesting world. (You can learn more about the setting on this page of Duvall's website or by reading my review of DARKNESS DAWNS.) This review will contain spoilers about DARKNESS DAWNS so don't read any further if you haven't read Book 1 and want to remain unspoiled!!

NIGHT REIGNS showcases a different couple: Ami and Marcus. As you know if you've read the first book, Ami is an extraterrestrial who was tortured by American scientists when she arrived. Seth rescued her but few members of the Immortal Guardians and their teams know about Ami's origins. All most people know is that she's important to Seth. Emotionally scarred by her experiences -- and who wouldn't be? -- Ami is slow to trust but she is devoted to Seth and David. So when Seth sends Ami to be Marcus' second, there's no question that she will do her duty. And thanks to her extraterrestrial nature, she's a bit faster than a human and heals remarkably, two attributes that she needs desperately, as you'll see as NIGHT REIGNS progresses.

Marcus is something of a bear. He's a loner who lives for the thrill of the chase. The adrenaline rush is all he has until Ami is forced into his life. He fights against her presence even when he's dazzled by her. His reluctance to open his home and his heart to Ami is huge because of a past relationship but their chemistry is off the charts so it's not long before he starts to succumb to her charms. I know that makes it sounds like Ami is a giant seductress but it's the exact opposite -- Ami is completely unaware of her appeal because her culture is so very different from Earth's and because she's not at all superficial. She's a babe in the woods compared to Marcus, at least when it comes to the romantic stuff, so NIGHT REIGNS is as much about Ami's sexual awakening as it is about Marcus' heart opening up again. Their relationship is actually very sweet and I really enjoyed watching them fall for each other. There's something very innocent about parts of their romance, even though the sexy stuff is pretty steamy. There's a really nice blend of sexy and sweet in NIGHT REIGNS and it made for a great story.

In the greater immortals vs. vampires storyline, we see some world-opening developments. There's a new vampire king on the rise, after Bastien's capture and realization that he is actually an immortal, plus some new interested parties are on the scene. As much as I love the romance, I find this part of the story so very intriguing. I can't wait to see what else Duvall has in store for us as the immortals' world gets more dangerous. Jenn

In this dazzling, sensual novel, Dianne Duvall beckons readers into a world of vampires, immortals, and humans with extraordinary gifts…where passion can last forever, if you’re willing to pay the price…

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control…

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible—when it means forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect…

I was very excited when Darkness Dawns showed up in my mailbox the other day. I loved the premise of the series before I started reading and so I couldn’t wait to get into Darkness Dawns.

The basic idea of the world of the Immortal Guardians is pretty straightforward in some ways. There are two main forces in the world: the immortal guardians, like Roland, who try to keep humans safe from vampires. Like vampires, immortals need blood to survive. Unlike vampires, immortals have an incredibly long lifespan while vampires live for maybe a couple centuries on a slow but progressive descent into madness and murder. There’s no such thing as a good vampire in this series, which makes it stand out to my mind. Plus, the origins of the immortals are a little up in the air, which really caught my attention. I’m hoping it gets explored more in the next book.

The main characters in Darkness Dawns are nicely matched. It took me a while to like Sarah, mostly because I found her a little preachy when the subject of eating organic came up, but she’s generally a lovely heroine, especially since the book opens with her saving Roland. She’s strong and smart and kind and adjusts surprisingly well to the whole the-man-I-just-met-isn’t-a-spy-he’s-really-a-blood-drinking-immortal situation. And I love that Dianne didn’t make it a huge issue for their romance. It was just a fact amongst fact about Roland, who’s got a lot going for him. I like that the author gave him a bad history with women because it makes a lot of sense. After all, not everyone is going to react well to being told their partner isn’t what he seems, particularly when it’s something this huge.

There are also some plot threads that are meant to carry into the next book, and perhaps beyond. It’s such a tease, but in a good way, because I really want to know what’s going to happen with these plot points.

All in all, I found this book to be incredibly satisfying. There are some great action sequences and the romance between Sarah and Roland is sweet and sexy all at the same time. I love the world and the characters that Dianne Duvall has created and I can’t wait to start reading Night Reigns.
