This week's guest is Roberta Trahan, author of the Dream Stewards series. The second book, THE KEYS TO THE REALMS, came out last month and she's dropped by the blog to tell us a bit about what she does when she's not working on her next book.
Welcome, Roberta!
Like any serious writer, I feel obligated to commit every spare second to working on my latest novel. And I do write every chance I get. But sometimes you have to get out of your own head. I have two go-to activities – one is old, and the other is new.
I have been obsessed with vintage and antique jewelry for nearly twenty years, when a favorite aunt passed away and left behind boxes and boxes of sparklies dating back three or more generations. Ever since, I have spent too many hours to count trawling second hand and thrift stores treasure hunting. I am especially fond of the Victorian and Art Deco / Nouveau periods. Here is a photo of some of my favorites:
(*special note – the lavender crystal lavaliere necklace was the inspiration for the magic pendants that belong to the guardians of the realms in my Dream Stewards series)
Recently, I decided to learn how to cook – I mean REALLY cook, as in create a meal with some creative substance. Since I have virtually zero culinary skills, this has been a challenge – fun, but daunting. An author friend recommended a service that delivers literally everything you need to make fabulous meals (including the recipe and step by step instructions). So, I gave it a try. It was fabulous. Here’s my first culinary adventure – Pan-Seared Salmon over Whole Wheat Israeli Couscous with Fava Bean Relish (before and after):
(*special note – turns out I am NOT a fan of fava beans!)

Here's the scoop on THE KEYS TO THE REALMS:
In this sequel to The Well of Tears, the last bastion of magic standing against the dark forces threatening the prophecy of the Ancients has narrowly escaped destruction—wrought by the sorcery of one of its own.
Reeling from loss and betrayal, the Stewardry at Fane Gramarye is in chaos. The young acolyte Glain is called to replace the traitor as Proctor and serve the new Sovereign. It has fallen to Alwen to lead the order and find the remaining Guardians of the Realms and their keys of power. Only then will the king of the prophecy win his throne.
When assassins breach the protective veil surrounding the Fane, an unexpected evil is revealed. The renegade mage Machreth has garnered new allies and his agents might already have infiltrated the ranks of the order. Glain must discover where the treachery lies before Machreth bends destiny to his will, but the truth is shrouded by secrets. Though her visionary powers are strong, there are things Glain can’t foresee. Can she still trust those she calls her friends—or her own heart? For even Glain has something to hide…
